Economics:
Interventionism
The government of Belgium is honour-bound to protect the Belgian people, and should seek to do so in areas where the average Belgian citizen cannot alter the circumstances affecting them. This is most true of the economy, with the current economic situation in Flanders highlighting how quickly and cruelly men can lose their jobs to events beyond their control. A policy of interventionism will ensure that the people of Belgium can stay employed during the fluctuations that the economy brings.
Free Trade
The last financial crisis has demonstrated us, that protectionist policies would be harmful for our country now. We are not going to use restrictive quotas and extensive tariffs, in order to limit the free flow of goods and discourage foreign investors. We will refrain from actively taxing domestic and outgoing trade. Our policies should not stop the growth of manifacturing and make us lose the foreign imports. Our main aim now in to stimulate and restore the Flemish economy, not gain certain dividends which tariffs can bring us. Prosperity of people, not enrichment of the government – that is our main economical principle now. Later we can return to our traditional protectionism.
Armaments:
Jingoism
Belgium is surrounded by strong and aggressive nations, some of which do not hide their wishes to conquer our beautiful country once again. A couple of years ago, after the coup attempt, we have lost our whole army – and, therefore, have become we became vulnerable to the foreign threat. We cannot lose time now, and should improve this situation as soon as possible. Some of us think, that now, when we are allied with France, we should not to increase our armed forces, since our partner will always protects us. Such people do not understand, that a nation without an army will always be in a subservient position. It will not have allies – it will only have puppet-masters, it will not have enemies – it will only have overlords. An army is the only thing that can truly make the nation independent.
Therefore, the resurrection and improvement of our armed forces must be our main aim now. We need to increase the numbers of our troops and improve their battle techniques, to organize certain re-staffing and rearmament programs. Jingoistic spirit will help us to fulfill this task quickly and effectively. I promise, that during my term, I will do everything to leave us with a modern and professional army, that will make us a power, that other nations will have to respect.
At the same time, Jingoism is going to mean, that we will be able to behave in a more decisive and self-respectful way, that we did before. After the coup attempt and double invasion of our country (though one of them was a benevolent one), many forces started to see us a puppet nation, that will always rely on foreign help and will never have a say in European politics. When we will be able to defend ourselves well (and, if it is needed, guarantee our interests aboard), we will become a truly sovereign and influential nation.
Foreign Affairs:
Honest Cooperation and Firm Protection of External Interests
Our main aim it to become recognized as a great power of Europe, and we should do everything we can to create strong alliances in Europe. Very much wil depend from our ability to become a military power. As I have noted before, a weak nation will never be respected, other nations will always dictate us our terms, instead of working with us, as with equal partners. When we will acquire considerable armed forces, we will have much more diplomatic possibilities, than we have now. We should develop our relationships with France, that has proven to be a reliable and loyal friend – and, at the same time, look for other worthy partners, that will be able to aid us, if the Dutch-Prussian alliance tries to take our freedom from us
In the uncivilized East, we should consider adapting to the changing political situation there, and carving out our own respective sphere of influence. Belgian must maintain good relations with her fellow European powers, and must take advantage of any situations that offer her benefits in Asia.
Citizenship:
Limited Citizenship
The people of Belgium are the Flemish and the Walloons, but this does not mean we discriminate against any immigrants who are not of these cultures. Those who are not natural Belgian citizens must undergo a ‘naturalization’ process before they can truly be regarded as being Belgian. We open our arms to immigrants, but not at the expense of the rights and responsibilities entrusted to the Belgian people.
Religious Policy:
Catholicism and the State
Belgium is a primarily Catholic nation, with the Catholic faith being not only the faith of most of the people, and the King, but is also constitutionally recognized as being the state religion of our nation. Our morals, our ethics, our civilization are based on Christianity, they make the society better. The Catholic faith must be preserved, and if possible expanded, throughout Belgium, but not at the expense of those who do not follow the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Belgium holds a sizeable number of those who do not follow the Pope in Rome, and as such they must have their religious views accepted and protected.
