We have all heard the arguments about how the current Christian setup in the early start dates is ahistorical. How we NEED Chalcedonianism before 1066, how in 769 the pope was still technically a vassal of the Byzantines, how splitting the church before 1066 is the worst thing since Muslim decadence and China's non attrition death stacks. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda...
I say why not keep the split churches and unite them? Why not both?
Have a Ecumenism mechanic, basically a score of how well any two branches of Christianity view one another and there actions
Basically as long as a certain threshold of civility and unity is kept between two separate denominations they are considered in communion and effectively the same faith, to the orthodox the Pope is just the patriarch of Rome to the Catholics the Patriarchs are just archbishops.
Should the Popes dogged instance to being above the Emperor of Rome piss off the Orthodox church so much that they fall out with the Pope then a schism can occur that if not fixed will cause the churches to fall out of communion and all vassal bishops/archbishops/patriarchs have to choose a side, so say the pope is a vassal of the Byzantines he would in this case become de-facto independent because he would not recognize any authority above him but God and if the patriarch of Alexandria agrees and sides with the pope he becomes the archbishop of Alexandria ext but at the same token the archbishop of Milan is a fervent ceaseropapist and becomes a new autocephalus patriarch ext ext.
Then you as the temporal ruler of so and so have a chose do you back the Pope? The Emperor and his loyal patriarchs? Or piss them both off by become a freebooting heretic and installing yourself as the leader of your countries church?
