So what will the economy be set up like?

Will you start with limited resources/money and can only spend to a certain limit?

Or do raw materials count as your currency and you just trade to make up for any deficits.

Having never played the HOI series before (being more of a Total War Series fan) I am not sure how it is set up, but from watching the videos from the Paradox team I am very excited to see more of this game and would love to pre-order it soonest.

The Econmy functions just with your industrial capacity and ressources. You can trade away civil capacity for ressources, so you could say your civlilian factories are you currency.

There will be no money in Hoi4.
You could say the currency of the game are civilian factories. You use civilian factories to build more civilian factories, military factories, infrastructure, dockyards, forts etc.
You can trade them away for resources, or get additional civilian factories if you trade your own resources away.

You can convert them to military factories and vice versa for a lower cost than building new ones. Military factories are used to produce equipment (rifles, support, tanks, planes, motorized, artillery etc.). All this equipment does need specific resources to be produced as well (there are steel, aluminium, tungsten, rubber, chromium, oil). You get resources by owning the province/state they are located in or via trading. If you lack resources your production speed will be lowered by 50% or 66% (if you lack 2 out of 3), if you lack all necessary ressources you can't produce anything.
There is no resource stockpile but its rather calculated on a daily/weekly basis.

Well, you might want to argue that Nazi Germany is the villain protagonist of the game...

But yeah, the parts of industry not under the control of the war machine (or otherwose devoted to something that's not directly helping the war effort) are represented as factories locked to civilian goods production.

It's pretty hard to explain the economy of HOI4 in a few sentences.
If you are a completely new player to HOI I suggest you start by reading the Developer Diaries. There are a few about economy.

Production efficiency is never zero, you can always produce something with the factories.

Actually I'm not too sure about the 66%, but nobody said thats wrong and it makes sense, so I guess its valid.

And I'm pretty sure efficiency can be zero.

Then please tell me, I'm unable to find anything, what happens if you lack all ressources? Lets say you want just Infantry Equipment, which just costs steel. You produce a bit equipment but want more and have the factories for it, but now you have no more steel left. What is the efficiency hit for the additional equipment you have no ressources left for if you claim you can build it without the needed ressources? Or maybe I just articulate myself wrong.

I am under the impression that if you lack resources it will be a percentage hit, maybe even scaling if you miss more than one resource. I think it was likened to trying to build planes without aluminum, you can do it, its just a hell of a lot harder.

Guesses can be wrong ;)

You should try to find some evidence from the hours of WWW videos. There's bound to be some of the tooltips available somewhere telling you the values.

The production can never hit zero, but when all resources are missing you will produce with 10% or so maybe less. Was mentioned in on of the industry DD.

Hilariously, HoI IV economics has more in common with a centrally planned economy - used by only a couple of avant-garde nations at the time - than the establishment market forces.
Wartime economies of "capitalist" nations were almost equally planned. You can`t get 50-70% of your economy to go into military without de-facto taking over whom produces what, consumes what, and to what limit.

Not to mention that US economy after great depression was an amaising merge of market and government regulated stuff, much of which, is still on the books today.
US Government did price controls for much of agricultural stuff in 1930s and 1940s.

Lacking resources shouldn't be interpreted as "I'm building ten battleships, but only have steel for 8". It's about having enough resources to make it efficient to keep everyone fully stocked all the time.
