hello all,

I have afeeling there won't be a specif answer to this but I'm struggling to fully understand how the economy works. I see sooo many numbers but I am not able to understand how the totals are reached.

For example: I added a constable to a province and a marketplace to another but I noticed that there were no changes displayed on the screen.

Could someone be so kind and give a specific example?

many thanks

Basically, there is a monthly income and a yearly income, unless you mint the monthly income will always be in the minus (because ALL your money goes to investments) eg.your monthly income is -1 ducats and your yearly income is 15 ducats, you are making 3 ducats per year. You get information about this in the economy section or just by hovering over the ducats number.

Information about buildings can be found here: http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Province_improvements

General info about economy found here: http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Economy

Depending on how much your provinces are making the difference a marketplace or constable makes can be quite small. For example, constable provides 25% boost to tax income; if your tax income is in the single digits it's going to make a small change. It will show up in the tooltip for the tax income.

Production income is derived from trade income (except for provinces with gold as their resource). Thus, a marketplace which provides a boost to trade value will help production income but won't show up on the production tooltip.

Don't worry, it confuses all of us from time to time.

One big thing to remember is constables really only work en masse, unless you're Delhi or something. Marketplaces are nice en masse as well, but I mainly just use them as the gateway to later trade buildings. Government's +5 Tax can be nice too, once you're far along enough to actually build it.

Building a constable won't show any change to the displayed tax income, since it only affects the year end census tax income. The marketplace will change the production income, but the change will be rather small in the early game due to low production efficiency.

Rules for EU III economy:

1. Don't take loans

2. Keep the minting slider down very low

3. Don't build over the forcelimits

4. Place merchants if you have a 70%+ chance of success

5. Break any of these rules if faced with disaster (well, except for this rule, obviously...)

Mousing over the Tax/Production/etc values in a specific province will show you all the modifiers, such as the +25% census tax from a constable or treasury. Also, check out the Economical and Trade Value mapmodes.

5. Break any of rules above if face a disaster - easier and more clear.

EDIT: i would add additional rules here :

6. If you want to build up your country but you don't have money for the moment you can take a loan - the faster you build up, the faster your economy become better, which mean you can gain more than you spent.

7. If your treasury is running low, and you face bankrupcy, or forced loan, you have to mint.

8. If your enemy who is likely to wage war with you, outnumbers you, you can build army over limit to manage him. Or when you need army to keep partner in PU.

9. Place your merchant in COT's that are worth it - IMHO COT's worth 300 or less are not worth expense. Above 100 they are not giving the money spent back.

Nah, you never need to take a loan unless you are in real danger, like Byzantium in the first war with the Ottomans or something. If you happen to want a sudden burst of cash for development, just whack the minting slider up to the top for a few months.

Loan gives you 5 time income monthly, which mean you will need to wait 5 month minting (and increasing your inflation), to get that money - actualy longer because your cost of armies etc. decrease your income meaning you need 6 month. Half of year. And faster gain of economic building can bring you more money sometimes, than you would loose from interest - aspecialy if you got advisor that lower your interest to 1%. So sometimes loans may be good for building up.

What? Always place merchants if they dont cost too much for your economy, autosend all over the world works fine, just go max free trade and trade efficiency and you'll have 5 in every CoT in 50-100 years. I would say number 4 rule is: never own a non-core CoT if you gonna trade all over the world as each non-core CoT decrease your compete chance with 15% with is bloody huge.

Agree. Whatever i would say that if you have low trade effectiveness, trade only in biggest COT's or only in your/s. Because trading in low value COT's don't bring much value spent on merchant back. If you have quite high trade eff. you can trade in COT's that value is higher than 200-300 ducats, because it will bring you some income anyway.

Yea in the start with for example sweden or teutonic order I only auto send to lubeck because the starting compete chance is so low, it usually works and nets you 5-10 ducats / month from only lubeck

Minting is very bad if you are playing a country that isn't dirt poor, like most countries in Europe. For the harder countries, it is a necessity.

Master of the Mint is very helpful if you are a large country, but if you are small, you end up paying for way more than it's worth. My suggestion is unless your monthly balance + your monthly investments is over 15 ducats, not to hire a Master of the Mint.

Contrary to tech advisors who except for few cases are useless for big countries (few cases mean when they are needed for decision).

Some advisors are always usefull - mostly military ones.

Tech advisors or not depends on your income alot as they scale very bad with your income, if you have for example 15 ducats / month like starting Sweden, 15 ducats / month invested in trade equals 100% of your income invested in trade which is excellent. When you got like 150 ducats / month income the 15 ducats becomes less worth the advisor.

I agree but not fully. If you are OPM with income 150 ducats, such advisor is still nice.

Full monopoly gives you about 5 times more income than 5 merchants. or 4 times i am not sure.

SO if you have full monopoly in your own, big centre of trade, it is better than if you have 5 merchant thruout the europe. Aspecialy because most are small, so you actualy make much less income than 4 times less than your full monopoly. In my Russian game, my trade gave me about 1/3 income - counting everything - and when i got monopoly even more. Whatever i got also quite big producion and some of my provinces had decent taxes. And i was full mercantilist.
