Hi everyone!

I’ve just read the last governmental report about environment and its (non-) protection (see there for more information. Being one the wealthiest country of the world, Eutopia ought to fight for the protection of the environment in the island as well as in the world.

The purpose of this NGO is to insist on the dangerous situation of the environment in Eutopia. Its goal is to act as a pressure group to force any government to act in favour of the defence of the environment. It is not linked or sponsored in any way with any political party, it is completely outside of the political fear. All we want is a greater awareness about ecological matters.

Our demands are to be discussed with any person willing to join. But our priorities should be:

- signature of the Tokyo Protocol by the government
- favouring Natural gas as the main combustible for public and private transports
- increasing use of natural and “clean” energies (wind, sun, hydroelectricity…)
- a nation-wide debate about the use of nuclear-energy

Mr Vimes,

The Free Republicans, if you note our party principles, are willing to commit ourselves to wide-reaching measures to protect the environment. We are not sure that the Tokyo agreement is really binding on us, so agreeing or not agreeing seems irrelevant to us. In any case, we are neither for or against signature, we simply see actions on this issue more important than a piece of paper. We would very much promote greater use of clean energy. As for natural gas in combustion engines, is this plausible? Why not instead encourage the development of hybrid engines that use less gas period?

As for nuclear energy, is this pro or con? You do know, that despite waste disposal issues, nuclear energy is still one of the cleanest and safest forms of making large amounts of energy? That said, if we do not have nuclear plants currently (and I'm not sure we do), current issues make them virtually implausible to build, and thus a non-issue.

Also, I am disappointed you do not include as a key plank strict enforcement of evnvironmental legislation in place, as this is perhaps the most difficult issue currently, and one we would be entirely in favor of cleaning up this negligence.

Very Respectfully,
Sean Galloglaigh

Dar Mr. Galloglaigh,

Thank you for your interest. Some parties might have an ecological platform, but the goal of this NGO is to promote ecological action whatever the leading party is. We don’t want to be linked with any of them, we are just a loby.

To answer your various points:

- when I spoke about natural gas, I don’t mean gasoline, but propane or butane (my English is perhaps not good enough, I am from one of the Latin provinces…). They are cheaper and pollute 10 times less than gasoline.
- About nuclear energy I asked for a nation wide debate because I don’t think it is an easy answer. I am neither pro nor against, it has to be thought considering the different sides of the question (pollute less than CO2, but problem of nuclear wastes, etc.) [OOC I think that Eutopia being bigger than the UK and being one of the wealthiest country of the world probably has at least a few nuclear plants, to be confirmed by the GMs…]
- The current legislation is nearly inexisting, hence my desire for a strong action and symbolical act such as the ratification of the Tokyo agreement.
- As for the other points, which are quite numerous, I didn’t present them as they would have to be discussed by the members of Ecological Awareness.

Sincerely yours,

Sam Vimes

Dear president,

Thank you for your written support, I hope your stand will give a push to our action. However words are not sufficient and won't change anything, what we need now is action! We can no longer wait: any day lost is lost for ourselfs and most importantly our childrens.

That's why I ask any person willing to do something for the environment to clearly express his or her support and his adhesion to EA.

Thanks

Sam Vimes

[OOC Murmurandus does your support means adhesion, I wasn't sure with your status of president. And I need at least four persons to join in order to be recognisez as a pressure group, so please join :)]

To Mr. Vimes and Ecological Awareness:

The Anglican Church of Eutopia (ACE) affirms that human beings have a stewardship duty under God to enable planet earth to provide a decent and sustainable standard of living for all. Although the ACE can not, institutionally speaking, become a member of your organization, we urge our membership to take an active interest in environmental issues, and ourselves promote a responsible attitude towards the earth God has given us. Please take a moment to review the attached resolution on environment passed at the last general synod of the church.

Yours in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Edward

That this General Synod of the Anglican Church of Eutopia:

Recognising the urgent need for effective and affirmative action to halt both the incipient and gross degradation of the country's natural resources, and to replace non-sustainable
practices with environmentally sensitive, ecologically sustainable methods of management;

Recognising the benefit to the whole nation of economically viable rural communities; and

Affirming that the ultimate responsibility for local environmental management lies with land holders and users, while the benefits of proper management and the potential harm of improper management are shared by the community as a whole;

Strongly urges support for the establishment of an environmental levy, as a part of income tax assessments to establish a National Environment Fund to provide resources for landholders, land users, and other citizens to exercise stewardship of the landscapes for which they are responsible.

I, member of the Libertarian Party, am very concerned about ecological issues. In contrary to what is generaly misunderstood, Liberalism is not the ennemy of ecology. I, we defend Liberty. Liberty is not just a concept of today. Liberty is also that tomorrow our children can have the same life conditions, the same Liberty or even better.
I will therefore support this Lobby.

In my official capacity as temporary spokesperson and leader, I welcome the EA to the political sphere. We encourage you to look into our party platform. In particluar, pillar two will be interesting for you.

Personally, I am very interested in enviromental affairs. I wish, as a private citizen, to become involved in this organisation, but regrettably, at this time I cannot.

The ERP and myself wish to work with you to get your proposals across.

Since I believe each nation needs some form of non-partisan environmental conscience, I wholeheartedly support this movement, and wish to join as a private person. Please add me to your roster. I think that this organisation will be able to achieve much more across party lines than any ecologist party would ever achieve. I am looking forward to the debate on nuclear energy.

Sincerely,
Sebastian Fitzpatrick

Thanks to the wide support it received, Ecological Awareness should be able to start its action soon.

A notification of the creation of the lobby has been sent to the government for registration and to the for Justices of the Supreme Court in order to make sure our action is constitutionnal.

I hope we will receive a positive answer soon. From then any debate or action can start.

At this stage, what is the EAs' view on the ERPs' proposal for the environment? We find it rateher revolutionary, and hope that the EA gives it some support if you believe that you can agree with it.

EDIT: I forgot to congratulate you! well done, and I hope the EA and ERP may have prosperous relations:p

It’ll be time we get started, at least to determine our programm. As the political situation isn’t settled yet, we’d better wait before starting our lobbying activity.

On a side note, even if I’m not realy religious, I’d like to thank the Eutopia Anglican Church for its clear stand on ecological matters which should be listen by millions of followers and hope it’ll help us in our action.

Every move towards a greater ecological awareness is a victory for us and for the Earth, whoever makes it ! There should be no partisan preference as long as it does something to help protecting the environment.

I think it’s now time to start a bit of a reflection about an important matter : nuclear energy. It’s usually seen as a threat towards environment and hence fought by ecologist. But I’m not sure it’s the right solution. We should have a real debate to know what should be our position.

As far as i’m concerned I’d rather agry with Timothy’s statement in the LD party thread (there is nothing political in my choosing this party, it’s just that’s where he made it, he could have made it here as well). Nuclear energy doesn’t produce any polluting emission and is much less expensive than natural and renewable energy (which should nonetheless be researched in priority).

Remains the problem of nuclear waste, of which we don’t have an answer yet. The best we can do for the moment is stocked them until we find a solution, if we find one in the future…

[OOC: could the people of the econ stats tell us if Europia has any nuclear energy and its level? Considering the size and the wealth of the country, its nuclear energy production should be between France and Italy…)

Ok people election time is close now, maybe we should start saying what we really want and make pressure on the various parties. we also have to decide on the nuclear question.

Dear Members of EA,

I am writing to solicit your opinions on the subject of a nuclear power plant in Eutopia. I see (OOC: from your first post :) ) that you have an interest in this issue.

While there are a number of ecological benefits to a nuclear power program, most notably concerning harmful emissions currently generated by coal plants, there are also several potential hazards.

Specifically, I am interested in your opinions concening high-level radioactive waste disposal. A nuclear plant will generate a fair amount of extremely dangerous amout of radioactive waste that must be disposed of somehow. Not only will waste disposal be a serious ecological issue but may even have some national security issues associated with it.

If you have any recommendations on how this issue should be handled or about the whole proposal for a nuclear power plant, could you please share them?

It appears that the plant is one of the few things the government is moving forward on, and it would be best to address these issues on the front end as opposed to trying to change them after the plant has been built and disposal procedures established.

Let's make sure the plant is as safe and clean as possible.

Thank you for your opinions on this matter,

Sincerely,

Rev. Jack Teano
