It depends on what you are looking for in the game, you are looking for more of a challenge than Brazil, I assume but still a valuable learning experience?

I kind of assume you want a nation with no hard scripted wars and potential to expand.

Belgium would probably be good for you, Portugal might be a little dull. The USA might be a valid option, as long as you prepare for the Civil War you should be strong enough to handle anything.

VickyWiki has country guides that might help you to pick one.

Belgium is quite boring IMO. I learned to play Victoria with nations such as Japan, Italy, Prussia, USA. Those are the 4 most interesting nations, simply because they expand a lot during the game through events. They might be quite hard to manage though. I'd recommend Japan if you want a good nation to start with since it doesn't have a lot of territory and it has a LOT of population so you don't really have to micromanage everything. Besides you start uncivilzed so you don't have to manage a lot of things at the beginning of the game.

I strongly advice Japan. Russia Too big for start, Prussia Too Strong, Belgium too boring, however Japan is very interesting, After 61 you civlized, and its quite fun to indusryliase(sorry, i couldn't write) build an Army and invade Korea, Brunei, Siam And Chin:D

Belgium doesn't have to be boring, but it does make a good starter nation because the only major scripted event is the war with the Netherlands. You can play at war and pretty much have the war's end play out the same each time, with Belgium essentially winning with Great Power support. Not bad.

A decent, fun strategy with Belgium is to concentrate on becoming a great colonial power. War in Europe is pretty much a losing proposition for Belgium, if you play it straight as I do. No manpower to fund large armies without some help from somewhere. That's where colonies and conquered uncivilized countries can be a big help. It's been a while, so I don't remember the particulars of who I attacked or when. Seems I remember taking on Cambodia with three divisions and a small naval task force, and then slowly expanded from there. The first peace treaty gave me a province or two as a staging base in addition to humiliating Cambodia. I then took all but the capitol. Third war completed annexation of Cambodia, and I had enough native manpower to expand and maintain a decent sized Asian presence. The three, starting, national divisions go back to the Continent once I have enough native manpower to maintain strength in the region. Remember it is very important to attach leaders with +reliability scores to those native divisions, unless you like having to fight your own divisions from time to time.

I remember Cambodia has only 3 provinces?

Yeah. Bad edit.

I was first talking about Amman, then remembered I started in Cambodia instead. Cambodia was the base, expanded into Amman, Laos (perhaps) and Siam, I think.

Working from memory.

But, I always do muti-stage annexations of other nations, using humiliate when necessary, reparations for extra cash, and staged annexation to try and keep badboy under control.

Right. Step by step is good at controling BB. But I have to value for prestige. Personally I prefer Korea or Japan. Indo-China aren't populated enough. If Korea gives you 2 provinces, you have a boost in you population. I wonder that it may double you population playing as BEL.

The biggest problem I can imagine by going that route would be the high probability of having to defend yourself against a warmongering Russia. The couple of time I tried playing Japan I always seemed to get into it with Russia over Korea.

With a decent early Indonesian base, you could conceivably jump into the Boxer Rebellion (or its aftermath) and get you some Chinese provinces. I would keep a decent amphibious force available to go after their capitol, if necessary, to help bring the war to a close should manpower become an issue.

But, do you want overwhelming population? Or would you be happy with a good selection of high-paying RGO's, because that is my usual aim with a colonial power.

Of course, having Chinese pops in your territory could get you some decent numbers of Chinese immigrants, since they are long-ranged pops.

As usual, lots of possibilities. One of my main reasons for my fascination with this game.
