1. Does the difficulty level I choose affect the AI economy and research speed? Will they have the same starting production efficiency as me?

2. Do Carrier Aircraft work from an airbase? I can't really tell if they do or not. If they do are they just less effective or something?

3. Is there anyway of obtaining whats left of a countries Navy after defeating them?

1. Does the difficulty level I choose affect the AI economy and research speed? Will they have the same starting production efficiency as me?

Yes and yes if techs and all that are the same. Making the AI on higher difficulty will give them better efficiency though.

2. Do Carrier Aircraft work from an airbase? I can't really tell if they do or not. If they do are they just less effective or something?

Yes, I believe they have less range but I could be wrong. Super useful as Japan BTW.

3. Is there anyway of obtaining whats left of a countries Navy after defeating them?

Unfortunately no.

1) Yes, and you can also buff major nations of your choosing using the sliders (found in a submenu of difficulty).

2) Yes, they can be used out of a regular airbase (Japan has some carrier variant squadrons based on land at the game's start) rather than being used at sea with a carrier. You can compare the carrier variant stats against the base version in the research or production screen, though I do believe they have less range and they're additionally slightly less speedy/agile or something.

3) No, but I do recall seeing a thread on this a few months ago- the conclusion reached was that ships were rarely captured during WW2.

3. Is there anyway of obtaining whats left of a countries Navy after defeating them?

The closest thing you can do is reduce them to a single province and puppet them. I'm pretty sure the puppet retains its navy. You won't have direct control over them but they'll still be on "your side". Useful when you defeat major naval powers such as Britain/Italy/Japan.

Can you give provinces to your own puppet in peace conferences?
(want to lend-lease to my landlocked puppet as Japan)
Try clicking on puppet's flag during peace conference and then grab provinces you want to give them to.

It's easier to get the fleet when you puppet a big country. I takes you around half a year to get your puppet annexed when you build factorys like crazy in their country. I always puppet the UK because of that. Defeat them, try to keep their fleet healthy while doing it, and puppet them. Then build factorys and annex them. Voila a German/whatever Homefleet.

Works with every country, and its the only way as far as i know that works.

That seems like a lot of work to get a bunch of obsolete husks. Better to annex their industry and use it to build a modern fleet.

Yes. Carrier models have lesser range, lesser speed and have some more cost to produce (in production points, material demand is the same).

Yeah that's true. But the Homefleet (-carriers) + whatever fleet you did build on your own is much better then anything you could build until this point. At least you have a lot of screens that protect your good ships.
