Indochina has a diverse set of cultures that plays off of one another and not everything is a buddhist sea. Prime example is the picture bellow. The stretch that covers Sikhottabang to Tay Nguyen Mong Pai to Luang Prabang animsim at the beginning of the game seems to have been preeminent.

20th century Laos ethnic make up: https://imgur.com/cEuB7YL

First let us look at Lang Xang. The Laos are divided into three groups: Sung, Loum and
Theung. These groups are not hogemenous (Though many share similarites) but are rather
designations based on their topographical habitation. The Sung are highlanders living mainly
in mountains, the Loum are valley people and the majority of the population (At game start
seems to have been 50%) and Theung were thoses living in the hills.
Buddhism (At the time at to some extant today) were buddhist while the others mainly followed
the animist belifs know as Satsana Phi which it shares with the ahom of Assam (known there as
Ban Phi).
Thus as you can imagine the arm that is southern Laos (With the exception of Vientiane) was and
is predominantly animist. Luang Bang in the meanwhile was a stronghold of animist belief which is
why the relic "Phra Bang" was kept in Vientiane rather than the capital, Luang Namtha is a mountain province
and thus under control of the Sung. Luang Prabang was in fact named Muang Sua prior to being renamed by king
Visoun who moved it there from Vientine. Note that while southern Laos (Except for Vientine) does include more
lowland territory the designation of "Hills" so it is somewhat obvious what its meant to represent. Futhermore
the kingdom of Lan Xang was very decentralized so only 90 some years after the king converted and still about
70 years until they would activley persue conversion those provinces would most likley be animist still.
Futhermore some aditional map changes that I would prupose (Details futher down).

Religous map: https://imgur.com/HMLpFHe

So the reasoning behind this is first to create the core of what became the Champasak kingdom and to also make create better representation for the religous demographics also Sarvan and Attapeu were in general aplit due to geographics and the same for champasak. Kukhan (Which is used as a short) and Buriram are split mainly to
do away with bloated provinces so it might be supperflous. A similar logic lead to the split of Nong Khai as most of the area was unsettled aside from Khmer remanents so this is largley to represent that stretch of land with its appropriate demographics. Sri Thep is added for better borders since as you can se in the picture of Lang Xang it is a bit odd. Phimai was the primary city of Thai Khorat up until the 18th century.

Next we have Khmer which has the Khmer Leom who are related but distinct from the khmer and part of the Bahnaric language group (with a few exceptions). At the moment they are decently represented so we will get back to them later.

Province Changes https://imgur.com/LLKfikC

Tay Nguyen is an odd province. It is allmost as big as the other cham provinces combined yet nothing else stands out. It means central highlands in Vietnamese and is advartised a highland with hard to penetrate forests and home to a multitude of tribes also mostly Bahnaric. They do not share the animist beliefs of the Theung. The multitude of tribes make for the rather strange summary that is the Tay Nguyen. Granted that not a lot is known of the political history at the time however the Jarai and Maa were both active and likley resembled the situation of the 1650s.

We also know that for a longer time the Jarai at least recognized the Champa as their nominal overlords and raided into both Cambodia and Vietnam, wether this was at the behest of the cham remains unknown. Still there was a political relationship between the two and on the map they along with the Maa are listed as kingdoms.
On that note the Cham are rather weak in game. IRL they were a regional power able to conquer southern (Modern day central) Dai Viet, raiding and invading the Khmer like it was routine thus suggestions will reflect a blostering of Champa with the intention that they can stand against one of their neighbors but not more.

I have also been looking at mountain tribes of SEA recently, my ideas are largely coinciding with your, adding a lot of animism/asian folk religion in Laos, adding a hill tribe culture.

I would also have most of the animist Lao provinces have a hill tribe culture, either a generic covering all of eastern SEA's hill tribes, or broken up in 2-3 specific cultures.

Northern Laos would have majority Kmuic people, still today they are majority in the northwestern provinces, including the province of Luang Prabang.
Southern Laos would have Katuic culture.
Bahnaric people is predominant in the cambodian highlands and central highlands of vietnam.
Either these three can be separate, or one group.

The weird thing with laotian geography, is how it's mostly mountains inhabited by these hill tribes, than along the rivers and in the valleys live the lao and because they are so much more densely populated they are the majority in population, but not covering the largest are.

for tay nguyen I'd go with 2-3 provinces, and I have the tags there start as marches of Cham, not being guarenteed.

Talking about Muangs, and the chinese tusi, I could see an estate covering both of those, and I've been thinking about better depicting the mandala government by having all the major kingdoms start with atleast one vassal (very doable).

I want to see how estates work and how the french vassals is handled before going further inte such a discussion though.

I don't know anything about history of Indo-China, but its interesting to note that some city names in Champa are typical Hindu names like - Indrapura, Vijaya, Panduranga, Kauthara.

1. Laos was a bit of a challange, the word lao in fact is a collective term for all subjects of the lao kingdoms or states and were divided in to three classes essentially; Sung, Loum, Theung. Also the animist religion at the same time is shared by all the classes to some extent hence why having the laos provinces being lao and animist solves a lot of problems. Exception would be for the proposed champasak provinces since those were very isolated.

2. Vassal swarm would make Cham a bit to powerful I feel.

Extremely common Ayutthaya is the Tai word for Ayodhya and several indian epics and stories have been natvized. India is essentially to indochina what persia is to central asia

Also in the Malay archipelago. Jakarta = Jaya Karta. Bandar Seri Begawan = Sri Bhagwan. Singapore = Singh Pur. Prey Nokor (Khmer name of Saigon area) = Prey Nagar. Brunei = Varuna (probably). Kalimantan comes from Sanskrit. And lots more examples

And also Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia are officially Buddhist, but in reality they are a mixture of Buddhism, older Hinduism, and native animism.
