I prefer more traditional symbols, these remind of stratego or something. That, however, is a minor quibble

Most of the stuff I saw showed up in preview material already published. But the confirmation of the Doomsday clock (which I saw before but didn't realize its significance) is a nice touch.
Also, did I see the Soviets nuke West Berlin? That's a helluva way to start WWIII, with nuclear strike within a few feet of friendly territory!

any chance of using a weather system like in the EUIV and March of the Eagles engine? The Hearts of Iron 3 map is rather ugly to look at and outdated for a 2013 game.

East vs West: The New History Game
yes. wiki says it dates back to the 17th century. Makes sense because it is the time when Russia emerged as a formidable power. Until that time, north/South axis was standard spatial perception axis in international relations. The rise of Russia, among other things, led to a slow transformation (1650-1750) into West/East axis as the dominant geographical perception of Europe. Russia was called the northern power (not eastern) at least until the end of the great Northern war.
It seems that the use of bear is slightly stereotypical and derogatory since it is not much of a symbol of Russia in Russia (two headed eagle is) but more of a British cartoon. It is like using Uncle Sam for USA instead of an eagle.
Another thing is that the country we speak of is not Russia (the Russian bear) but USSR. One of the few countries in history which had a name that did not refer to any ethnic or territorial entity and many of its leading politicians, scientists etc. were not Russians. Remember, there is a BIG difference between русские and россияне or between русская (ruskaja) Федерация and Российская (rusijskaja) Федерация. The Czech president is quite confident in Russian so he once made a speech in Russian on a visit to Russia without a translator. It was a minor diplomatic incident because he said ruskaja instead of rusijskaja (which is both translated Russian in English) - it could imply that he overlooks other nationalities than Russians when speaking about Russia.
