I've always wondered about the Pagan religion which exists solely in Ethiopia and Sudan and what exactly its purpose is. In earlier versions I assumed it was simply there to be later developed but it doesn't seem like any additional work is going into it. This is strange to me because there is plenty of information on their beliefs - they still exist today after all - and there does already exist a West African religion. It's disappointing because their faith is very interesting, being a syncretic combination of ancient Judaism and indigenous beliefs; it even has a name, 'Pagan-Hebraic.' The fact the Pagan religion is totally lacking in mechanics and flavour and is obviously just a place-holder religion which was never developed - one of its holy sites is Rome despite being entirely localised in east Africa - is also disappointing. Is there any plans for an East African/Pagan-Hebraic religion at some point?

Generic paganism is mainly just a placeholder religion for histories and is not just East African Paganism, as it's also used for pre-Islamic pagans as well, to my knowledge. If you want to bring this up with the Pagan Improvement Project submod, though, feel free.

As you say, it's a place-holder religion for a lot of deceased individuals who held pagan faiths which by the earliest start-date no longer exist. This only makes it even more confusing that there are actual rulers who have the Pagan religion that you can play when it wasn't really meant for that; according to the game, these east-Africans have the same religious beliefs as ancient Arabs and Irish. It's an area that is very unfinished compared to the polished nature of everything else in the game, like a small chunk that was overlooked by everyone and is stuck in perpetual alpha.

I will check out the submod, I wasn't aware such a thing existed. Thanks.

The pagan religion is from the base game, paradox did it because they didn't want to have to deal with making religions and descriptions for every single history character with a religion that wasn't around in the start date, I don't blame them considering the reaction when they made an exception and added Hellenic for the history files, god knows how many threads asking/demanding that they fix bugs/add features to a religion that was never meant to played. When they finally disabled it from the ruler designer there where even more complaints.

I am aware. I think this makes it even more bizarre that this religion which was only meant for dead characters exists in a tangible form with many practitioners. It's additionally confusing because these people technically have the same religion as ancient Arabs and Celts. I understand this is because it's only a place-holder religion meant to represent anyone following a pre-Abrahamic faith with no practitioners as of the earliest start-date, but that is precisely my point; the religion which these east-African pagans follow still exists and is fairly widespread. It really stands out when compared to everything else in the game when they added a playable yet ahistorical and bare-bones religion to represent both the indigenous and still extant beliefs of many east-Africans and simultaneously the dead religions of many pre-Abrahamic individuals.

They have a placeholder religion because they're a very minor faction in the corner of the map that will 9 times of 10 get steamrolled by a massive Christian realm. You can't expect the HIP team to put the effort into developing something that's only going to be played by a very small number of people.
