The most obvious threat is the great grey beast to your south.

Once upon a time, in a past Denmark game, I won the Great Race for the pagan lands and took them all from Lübeck to the baltics.
Then the Kaizer realized most of my new territories fell under de jure HRE.
The End.

But I agree, taking the lands from the pagans was easy, gold was abundant for mercs and upgrading your castles, and you can always invade England if all else fails.

I guess that is the reason that AI Denmark launches for Lithuania, rather than the pagan lands that are right next to them.

I have tried several games as a Muslim, and the decadence that you have to deal with pretty much makes that aspect of the game 0 fun for me, I am pretty pisssed I spent $9.99 on it, and will not likely buy anymore expansions because of how bad that one is for me.

It's been said that it helps to have a smaller demesne than your landed relatives, put them on your court as advisors, wage wars etc. Imprison some, dont have to kill everybody.

Being a newbie myself, I would definitely recommend playing a count in Ireland. Starting as the Count of Dublin, I managed to become king of Ireland in just two generations. I had earlier been trying to play characters that seemed easy on paper. William the Bastard was pretty straight forward but I just couldn't cope with succession. Philippe Capet is insanely hard. I also tried playing as the HRE and resigned almost immediately...

Ireland can get a bit boring as you'll have to do a lot of upgrading and economic management before you are in a position to challenge Scotland or England.

I think I will try King Svend of Denmark next so this caught my eyes:

3- Denmark: Extremely strong Kingdom with developed holdings, and you have a claim on England. You have nearly 10 sons however, and that can make a hell of a civil war. You can either go to war for England, help Norway or ignore it all and smash the Finnish/Baltic Pagans. Its threatned by the HRE and a united Sweden.
Is it actually possible to go to war for England with the initial levies and lack of funds for mercs?

Quite possible actually, although it is by no means easy, and I wouldn't advice it for someone wanting to learn how to play, as England becomes a nightmare after that.

Anyways, I've come across two possible "routes" to take (these are by no means the only ones ofcourse, just the ones I've found to be most effective):

A) you wait a year or two, let the forces duke it out for a while etc. Then once they've trashed each other for long enough, you join in and start grabbing as many sieges as possible, while avoiding battle unless you can win with few casualties. You might even be able to afford mercs to speed things up after a while.
There's a serious drawback to this though, as there's a posibility the war ends quickly, and if the Saxons win your chances are quite bad. However, the second route is directly tied to the war ending early.
B) If Norway or Normandy wins, there'll be a faction trying to get someone else into power quite quickly in my experience, and they will quite often start a civil war a few years after. If they do this, you have a very good chance at grabbing the throne since everyone will be fighting everyone else as well :) (just avoid battles as much as possible).

Again: Not saying these are the options ofcourse :p

If you go for the September 15 start date, then after the invasions are over, when/if William won, it is certainly possible, since England is in turmoil and a lot of provinces will have recently conquered/wrong culture modifiers, while the Saxons are rebellious. So just save your gold, then once the invasion is over, William will be reduced in strength and you should be able to take him on. In particular if you have some allies and as Denmark you have 14 sons and daughters to create alliances. Just focus on quickly sieging the recently conquered provinces for cheap war score.

If you start after William's invasion, he starts out with an England that does not have recently conquered, which makes it much harder to take over England.

Well being one of those new people, I can say Iberia was a bad choice for me. Yes you have allies, but are they going to help you? Not once in one call for help did any of the Iberia Kingdoms help, not once in 4 games. All your vassals are ready for independance,*does not matter which Kingdom either* and you do not have the troops to prevent it. All in all, playing as an Irish count was much better to learn for me.

Unless you've really pissed the other Kings off they should always answer your call when fighting against Muslims. Iberia does force you play aggressive, you want to make sure you inherit your brother's Kingdoms and you need to beat down the nearby Muslims before they can expand (if one of the other Kingdoms gets Holy Warred, it's in your best interest to help them out) but I don't think this makes it a bad choice for new players. If you do manage to inherit a second or third Kingdom then you probably won't need the help from your allies. I can't disagree with Ireland, though. Most of the games I played before my Castille game were started as an Irish count and it is very easy.

Give Flanders a try. It is a fairly large Duchy with mostly coastal provinces and a surprisingly large number of holdings per county (Brugee has 7 slots and Ghent has 6). Revoke the other counties in your realm to take direct control of the Duchy and build harbours and villages and you will be rolling in gold in no time. You have both France and the HRE as your De Jure liege so you can switch to the HRE or stay with France if you prefer. A nasty trick is to stay with France and take Amiens and Vermandois by fabricating claims and create the Duchy of Valois. Use your mad cash to hire mercs and while the French monarch is busy at war (most likely against Norman England since they win the 1066 every bloody time since 1.07  ) and press your De Jure claim on Paris. Then swear fealty to the HRE and enjoy your second 7 holding county and feel that great sense of satisfaction knowing you screwed over the French :p. If you are part of the HRE you are capable of forming the Kingdom of Frisia right off the bat but regardless your son is married to the countess of Hainaut so your grandson will inherit that one day, which is always fun. Or you could try to become King of France which is fun too.

Allies are key for Svend and you have loads of kids, so make the most of them diplomatically; marry into the families of Norway, Sweden, Scotland, Brittany and the Empire, then throw some gold around whilst it's feasible and invite everyone in. If you're lucky, most of them should accept.

William's powerful, but he can't fend off Vikings, Germans, Bretons and Scots.

This. I lost to Svend once as Harold. I'd fended off the Normans, the Norwegians had been blunted and I finally killed Harald in battle, and hoping I could settle in for a nice quiet rule, but no. Suddenly Danes. With France, Sweden and two of the Iberians in company. Bleh.

He mostly occupied Hwicce lands though, so I got the throne back later on. But yeah, Denmark is highly feasible. It's in a better position than Norway to be honest.

Any emperor in my opinion is easy start, from most time periods, with very few exceptions. The same applies to idependent kings.
However it removes the fun...

If you choose irish / castilian counts / dukes, you'll find tutorials over youtube and gaming sites. This will speed up learning curve and make it interactive enough to catch on.

I have no idea what to recommend not to do (don't modify overall game difficulty, just gives an unfair bonus to AI, doesn't improve it).
