I think early game all of the money will be naturally retained in Ming's (and Japan) trade node. The only way to really maximize that is by conquering land to get to other trade nodes (the japanese one for instance).

Later in the game europeans will come and try to steer trade away with merchants, fleets, and maybe land grab. Then you should try to deny them that by holding on the land and denying fleet basing rights so that their ships would be out of support range. Easier said than done.

In any case I'm afraid that for China, the trade game is a primarily a conquest game.

While playing as trade oriented Ming might be quite difficult because of how trade flows in the world, Japan (after you unite it) can be quite interesting. You can get trade from americas as shown in one of quil18's videos.

Ah yes - I had forgotten about that trade route. True, it might actually saturate the Asian nation's merchants if focused on trade.

What's the logic behind making trade flow one-way only anyways? And have the devs said anything about how moddable the trade nodes and flow will be?

Flows are one-way hardcoded last I heard - We might see a trading Patch/DLC at some point though, that changes the mechanic.

I would have loved to see organic trade nodes that adapt to the demand/supply and political situation of the game.

Anyone know how Ming's first encounter with Europeans is handled, can Ming block all trade or can Europeans get limited access such as historically through Hong Kong or Macau? how is this going to work?

do you remember where it's said that trade routes are hardcoded?
it will seriously cripple the modding possibilities...

They said nodes are fully moddable, just that the trade system itself is hardcoded in. You can add nodes, remove nodes, and change paths (IIRC), and change what node a province belongs too.

that's a great thing, thanks.
then i suppose you can make some routes two-way creating a second route that moves in the opposite direction if you want to... or if that's not possible crating a triangular flow to make trade go back two-way...

Yes that will probably be the only way to circumvent the enforced one way routes - Not sure how pretty it is going to be. The arrows are pretty big.

I keep my fingers crossed they won't do that. Since they have reverted a lot of the sandboxiness of EU3 into the more historical oriented EU2, I hope they don't spend resources on taking away a well thought through trade system based on historical trade flows.

Trading Ming seems completely viable. If ming can control the trade nodes (and possibly colonize america) they can send trade into their capital for tons of money. However, it is kind of silly to play trade empire with ming. Being a major powerhouse in a region full of weaker powers, conquest is definitely a better way to play the ming. At least, that is how i would be playing Ming. They are not forced into trade empires like Portugal or Venice so the Ming has lots of freedom. So yeah, trade Ming is definitely an option, at least from what i've seen so far.

Eh i would say that China would get FAR more from production increase. I mean any coast country can trade but China is in a far better production spot. Trade is for those countries that dont produce enough of their own money but have nice naval spots.

Isn't trade like a minimal share of Ming's income. In the sense that like a 5% production bonus would outweight a 100% trade bonus almost?

Or am I getting it wrong? Do they really have a lot of trade flowing into their node? Feels like the design is outflow mostly and then what's the point in trade with China?

Edit: From what I can see in QUills video, The Beijing trade node sucks for a trade game. It's outflow only.

However if you could change capital so something else downstream like Hangsou you could funnel in trade from Nippon, The Americas, Canton and Beijing.

Then it would be the matter of gaining trade power in Nippon. Maybe take pieces of Japan and Korea. I have no idea if it would be possible to go to americas given the tech cost, would be fun though. Give the amount of gold you take in maybe you could spam fleet basing rights everywhere almost?
Having the capital in Nanjing could work
