The anomalies seem to be the easter eggs for this game: run around like crazy to grab as many as you can before they're all gone. I personally don't enjoy that part of these games. I don't want the game to force me to act in a particular way (as a greedy child, pushing other kids out of the way to grab the most goodies). If I'm in the mood for a slow start to the game, and being peaceful and polite to other races, I should be able to do that without the major penalty of being behind in technology.
Am I very unusual in this perspective? Do others feel that the 'running around like a greedy kid' is the best part of the game? It's a very common part of 4x games, but I really don't know how popular it actually is among other players.
For myself, I'm likely to simply delete the anomaly file, to avoid the desperate scramble part, although that costs some of the fun of exploration. What I'd rather see is an option to avoid just the 'time limited' aspect. Instead, I suggest an option to have separate anomaly lists created for each race. Your race has a chance of finding anomalies in each system that you haven't yet surveyed, regardless of how many other races have surveyed the system (and possibly found and studied anomalies). That has the additional benefit of giving you motivation to obtain access to inhabited systems, through diplomacy, trade, or military threat, plus the option of sharing research cost and outcome. The ability to modify the density--and maybe value--of anomalies in the game would be welcome too; I'm sure some people would want several in each system, while others would prefer them to be rare treasures.
