As I said other times, Dinasties doesn't cease to exist, they can have different names but while can draw a line to you it is the same.

My guess is that it would be possible for your entire line to die out but not very likely.

Personally I would really like the extinction of a dynasty to be a good possibility. Not only would it have an historic feel about it but it would force the player to think a little like the heads of dynasties in the CK era. You would always have to be concerned about your family (no matter how distant the relation) which seems very realistic to me.:)

Offhand, the only two things I could think of that have a good possibility of wiping an entire dynasty, distant cousins and all, off the face of Simulated Europe are the Mongols and the Plague.

Well that and the dynasty comes to an end because another unrelated family takes your holdings.

Your family may continue but they will not have the right to the land they once did and without that what is the point of calling yourself a dynasty?

Historically this was the case sometimes. (Montmorency in France for exemple)

In the case of royal dynasties, you could always find a claimant, usually a descendant in the female line. When the Liudolfings died out (1024), the Electors chose from 2 Salian candidates that were descended in the female line. Again, the Salians were succeeded by the Staufen (1138), who were their descendants in the female line.

The Angevins/Plantagenets were female-line descendants of the Normans. The Staufen claimed Sicily by marriage to Constance. The Kings of Outremer were several times chosen by marriage to a female relative of the previous king. When the Habsburgs finally gave up the ghost, the line was continued by marriage to Lorraine.

Of course, like Sonny said, its "possible" to extinguish an entire royal dynasty, but very unlikely. Even in extreme cases like that of the Staufen in the 13th c., there were still claimants who were distantly related by female.

For game purposes, Id guess this would be the way out, rather than just a message-box that pops up "Game Over". Unless your dynasty produces only sons, that is...

In case of total extinguishment, the peers acclaim a new king. It's possible again in the Middle-Age.

It could have happened, and it happened in the HRE. It depends, among other things, of the relative balance of power between the Crown and the "Parliaments". For example, this threat convinced Edward II of abdicating in favour of Edward III, to prevent the likes of Mortimer of electing a new King out of the Plantagenêts. The same thing with Edward I would have been unthinkable due to Edward's strongwilled character.
