Well personally i never seen a shortage in dye yet ,and even if it was in shortage i think i could hardly miss the coal that is already used for other sorts of crucial industry.

Couldn't we replace it with an other maybe interresting industry? Like a cigar/cigarrete factory maybe? (tobbaco+paper)

Never saw the point of them myself, like the idea of the cigar factory, though for cigars you don't need paper, just tobacco leaves, unless you want to make ciggarettes.

Edit: Yeah, you said cigarettes there didn't you ;)

With provinces that produce dye, why have a factory for it? It's the only good that can be produced by farmers and clerks.

I never build dye factories, although I have taken over other provinces that already had them built. Usually coal is cheap so at least it doesn't loose money.

But wouldn't you rather capture a profitable cigarette factory. ;)

btw. can you add factory's or Rgo's?

Dye factories make a lot more dye than the RGOs. And it does run shourt sometimes.

I don't think you can add factories, but you can mod them. I'd get rid of the airplane factory before the dye factory though.

Don't worry ,the airplane factory is on my list to. ;) And i'm wondering where telephone's differ much from electric gear.

And some thoughts for Rgo's ,like horse ranch and furs ,but their aint much rgo's uselles enough to kill.

Personally I find that late in the game there is a much greater worldwide supply of coal than of dye. The supply of dye can get particularly impacted if a lot of the small Indian nations that produce due get conquered. In that case the productivity of those pops gets halved (due to being now a minority pop).

Dye factories are only useful if there is low production of natural dyes. This happens as a result of low efficiency (minority POPs) and the inability of uncivilised nations to expand RGOs. If the dye RGOs in india have all been expanded (someones conquered them all) then there is usually a huge ouput of dyes and not much point in building the factories.

A more interesting issue would be what happens in MP games. World production of dyes is concentrated in India and a country controlling india could cripple the rest of the world's clothing production if there were no dye factories. In the absence of dye factories this could also be exploited by a human player in SP.

Given the above, I think it would probably be better to keep them in.

On a historical note, artifical dyes are much better than natural dyes and are the origin of modern chemical industries

Yes, I sometimes build them, but only when they'res a shortage of dye (either due to prestige, or due to poor RGO efficency). Even then I build them in the boontown provinces and get them staffed by lazy Polaks :)

I build dye factories from time to time if I have the extra pops and don't plan on invading or purchasing India. I like to be self sufficient.

I'm playing a VIP 0.3 game right now as the USA.

I'm trying damn hard to make sure all the cotton I grow is converted to fabric and all the fabric I make is converted to clothes. This, plus the UK's annexation of British India, eventually produced a shortage of dye for sale on the world market.

So, for the first time I built and used my dye factories (have built them in earlier games, just for kicks/experimentation) and they have saved my clothing industry.

I would recommend that the productivity of the dye factories be boosted (yes, I know I can mod it myself), as it is quite low. AFAIK, the emergence of a synthetic dye industry was quite the boon for German industry.

I build them since I normally dont have enough natural dye, plus its a good way to burn some excess coal.
