DV crashes when starting game

Just bought DV from Gamersgate and installed it along with the 2.1 beta patch. What happens is that after selecting a kingdom and starting the game, it instantly crashes to desktop from the "Initializing provinces..." phase. No error messages or anything. I tried to reinstall everything and also without the beta patch, but same thing occurs every time.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

Obvious question -- did you install it on top of Crusader Kings?

Obvious answer: of course.

edit: Oh and just to clarify (I've no idea whether it makes any difference though), the first install was on top of CK 1.05, the other on whatever the original out-of-the-box release was, 1.0 probably. Similar crash in both cases.

Okay, did you change screen resolution in settings.txt perhaps, or are you running it windowed?

If you changed resolution, it must be to something your videocard actually supports. If windowed, you must be running in 16-bit colour mode.

Hm, the game was set to run at the default 1024x768 fullscreen and changing my desktop resolution from 1280x800 to 1024x768 fixed the problem.
