Dutch literacy
I was wondering, where thus paradox get there numbers from??
GC : 28%
1861 : 32%
1881 : 36%
1914 : 77%
I’m a history student and last period we looked at the “unification of the Netherlands”, literacy was one of the things we handeld.
Some figures.
The percentages of men with were checked if they were fit for military service / conscription (in those days everybody was checked) and couldn’t reed or write:
1850 : 26.1% couldn’t, so 73.9% could
1875 : 13.5% couldn’t, so 86.5% could
1900 : 2.8% couldn’t, so 97.2% could
In 1630 the government ordered that every parent should sent there kids to school to learn to reed and write.
In 1730 the government made it obligatory.
This was for boys and girls.
So I was wondering, where thus paradox get those, in my opinion, wrong and low numbers from?
Thanks
