you took Japan out before they civilized i take it?

I declared colonial war upon an uncivilized Japan, and when whe signed the first peace Tokugawa (or a name like that...) declared independent from Japan and my army was still walking back home from there and I declared war upon them and Japan again.
What a monstrosity! ;)

How many national POPs have you got?

I don't remember, but I added javan, malayan and japanese like national cultures. That's a personal law: cultures with more of 10% of total amount I add them as national culture after 20 years if I'm a liberal democracy.

I would never add non-European cultures as a European country personally, but I know you're not claiming this was plausible. ;)

Besides, having a small national population can be great for research.

Way to go Salim!!!:rofl:You have proved my theory that the resources in the DEI are indeed enough to reach #1  I never reached it myself due to the fact that I am not a big war wager (got to #5 by uniting all of current Indonesia + Phillipines and New Guinea). My biggest wish in the next version of Victoria would be a Fantasia scenario like the had in EU, then you could conquer Europe playing as Ireland (but that will probably remain a dream). :D

Ergh!

Such an ahistoric, unplausible scenario will hopefully never be included in any major mod. It's like having a nation of unicorns unite the world under a rainbow which they farted out! Completely ridiculous, as well as not suitable for the mod in any way!

If you want a fantasia mod try out Rick Rand it is really simple and works fine. Personally I could never get into it for the same reason I could never get into the EUII Fantasia, it simply lacked a history of any sort so I had trouble finding a context in which to place my game.

Each to their own, though, I suppose.

I think the cultuurstelsel should be better modelled. I'm one of the early contributors of Dutch events to the VIP mod and the current event about the Cultuurstelsel is my idea/work. At the time I wanted to give an increased productivity for silk, coffee and what not (i.e. the local resources) for increased militancy for the local population. The people who at that time where in charge of VIP (Generalisimo and pimparel IIRC) were against it, because in their design philosophy only technology should in/decrease production efficiency. Therefore I made the event so that it increased life sustainability of Batavia (the idea is that the profits of the cultuurstelsel helped the city blossom).

I'd like it when the event is redesigned so that it does increase the production efficiency of certain RGO's and that it increases militancy for the local population. The player would, from time to time, get the chance to abandon or continue the policy. There could also be random events like the Bad Harvest event. Instead of substracting some resources from the stockpile, local farmers should receive a +1 (or whatever value) in militancy, so symbolize that they're having more difficulties because of the Cultuurstelsel.

Now that the Dutch East Indies is seperated I agree that efficiency should be increased too. The DEI would likely continue policies on any conquered territories too, I imagine. Perhaps some of the RGO values should be lowered at the start of the game, mind, so that balance is maintained somewhat when the event gives an efficiency boost. When the cultuurstelsel ends things could be set back to normal.

:confused:I'm sorry did I touch a nerve??? Maybe Jamhaw is right and Fantasia would be a bad comparison to use since I had not played that in 7 years, I had forgotten his point about the total lack of historical context, however I also would like an option maybe in Vic 2 that would allow a more ahistorical gameplay so that I could take a country such as Romania and see how much of Europe I could conquer with it. I miss being able to play as Transvaal and not having the Boer war set in stone no matter what your relations politically are. The current choice of fight or game over does not appeal to someone who likes playing a mostly peacful game.:( While I like the historical facts that are put into the mods I also worry that you are taking the "what if ? " factor out of the game, the danger of that being the human player will have no choice in gameplay. Maybe in the next mod you could give the player a way out of the choice between war and game over. That being said I respect Palisadoes opinions and have learned a great many things about how to play the game from reading your excellent posts, so Peace!

One of the fundamental design philosophies of this mod is that things will go historically. While alternative things sometimes happen, they do not happen very often, unless directly initiated by the player. It can get annoying at times when something happens to keep it within history despite it not making sense in the context of that particular game (or occuring after you squandered vast quantities of blood or gold) but it is what this mod is based on. As time goes by additional ahistorical chains should get further developed, which will improve the what if part of the game. Also have you tried out Rick Rand yet?

Apologies if this is too OT but why didn't Dutch people have more babies from 1600 to 1800? Were the men and women particularly unattractive? Were they too busy counting money? This lack of population growth was also brought up in a book I recently read (Rise and Fall of the Great Powers) and it is perplexing.

It all ends up in "food". More people equals more people to feed. More people to feed and not enough land to produce food either means famine or importing food. Importing food means losing money. Losing money means less wealthy life style. Dutch enjoyed wealthy life styles.

Perhaps it's also worth noting that children were an asset during this time. That is, they would go off to work at a young age and contribute to the household income too. I imagine since the Dutch were apparently quite wealthy, they didn't need so many 'assets'?? Just speculation, mind.

Just a guess, but I do not think the average Dutchman was particularly rich during the period of 1600-1800. Sure, there were some rich ones, but most were probably just normal working-class people/farmers.
