Yeees! That sounds like a great read. Furthermore, whats your opinion of further splitting up various cultures in the archipelago? If I recall correctly, the base game had Filipino, Malay, Javan, Moluccan, Melanesian, and Asian Minor.
It always seemed like such a massive understatement, compared to the wealth of different peoples in the region.
That'll take a day or two.
About cultures:
I used
this map as a guide for my setup, as well as the 19th century censusses I could find (but they generally didn't differate much between native groups). The cultures I used were:
-Javanese
-Sundanese (largest culture group in Vicky 2 without their own culture I think)
-Malay
-Madurese
-Batak
-Buginese
-Minangkabau
-Banjarese
-Achenese
-Balinese
-Dayak
-Sasak (or not, don't remember)
Basicly the 13 (current) largest ethnic groups of Indonesia. Then I also used some algamated culture groups such as melanese and asian minor.
Ah, right. In the same vein I have found the book
Beknopte Beschrijving van de Nederlandsche Overzeesche Bezittingen ("Concise Description of the Dutch Overseas Possessions" on Google Books, with descriptions of every
residentie in the Indies, and also some more general descriptions of the major islands.
Is that the one where they talk about Makassar having good horses, there being unexploited iron mines in the Luwu interiour and the trees on Riau being well suited for mastmaking? Then I read it as well years ago

If not; I should probably read.
But yeah; just find something and read it. I tend not to like books dealing with broad subjects and those giving overviews, because in the end they don't say an aweful lot. I prefer reading highyl specialised literature, as you'll end up with a far better understanding.
Here is one dealing with just the history of the Jambi sultanate. Far more interesting read than a general history of the whole DEI.
