Hello everyone,

I'm playing my first campaign in Ireland and so far I have 5 counties and 2 duchies under my control.

I have a vassal who has 2 of my counties. Both counties create a duchy. Atm, I have the title for that duchy, but what would happen if I granted that duchy title to the count who owns both counties? Would he separate and create his own Petty Kingdom, since I did the same when I got my first duchy.

In general, is there any benefit if I give duke titles to my vassals? Or should I keep them for myself?

Thanks in advance!

If you are a duke, all duchies you create will become independent. If you're a king, new duchies will remain as your vassals. The same logic applies for a king giving away kingdoms or an Emperor giving away empires. It's generally designed as a way for you to play a feudal system, where you rely on vassals that sooner or later might rise up against you.

I don't like that kind of style of playing the game, so I usually just hang out in Upper Lorraine / Alsace, keep within 5 counties for the entire span of the game, and just ruin my de jure lieges realm (most often that'd be Lotharingia / Middle Francia). But that's just me :)

As Iniovan said, if you give to one of your vassal a title with the same rank as you, they will become independant (another effect of that is that if you, as a king, give a duchy title to one of your dukes' vassal, they will be under your direct control - don't know if I'm clear enough).

However, if you get the Kingdom of Ireland, you may want to give the duchy to your vassal instead of keeping it (or you could get your vassal's lands, that would solve the problem). If you keep the duchy as a king, your vassal will want it, and thus you'll have an opinion hit (I think it's -25, with another -50 if the vassal is ambitious), when you won't have any benefit for keeping it (well you'd get a little bit more prestige, but I don't think that's worth the opinion malus).

Thanks guys for clearing things up. Basically, until I get the whole Kingdom I'm keeping duchies for myself :)

You don't need the whole kingdom, you just need to be king or emperor. Even when you're a king or emperor you could keep 1 or maximum 2 duchies, I will advise to do so under elective law to keep at least 1 duchy for your ruler's dynasty (they might elect someone else). If I keep 2 duchies, then I usually grant 1 to my heir, after he or she got married. Anything above 2 is a serious burden, since then desires duchy opinion malus (limited to the duchy that vassal is located) gets combined with the too many duchies held malus (applies to every vassal of the realm).
