Duchy of York became... Deira?

The ruler is Catholic Anglo-Saxon, the duchy was always called "York", but now it suddenly became Deira and the Reset button does not change it. The only references I could find in the game files are the adjective "Deiran" for the duchy of Galloway and the barony of Deiralzur.

Don't think I've ever seen "Deira" before, but it must be an Anglo-Saxon localization for York. That's the only way a title will change names other than you renaming it yourself.

If you're not on Ironman try changing your culture with the console and the title should rename itself to York or another variant such as Jorvik.

If you do a Google search for the Duchy of Deira the second source is a book from the middle 1800's that says the Duchy of Deira was made up of the counties of Lancaster, York, Westmorland, Cumberland, and Durham.

Never the less, this thing existed only up to 664 and the joined Northumbria. Besides, I could not find this name in the game files. I'm playing Ironman, but this seems to be changed by game. Also, the save is from the previous patch, where it was York, but now it became Deira.

Deira is the celtic dynamic name for York. Since the last ruler was welsh, it kept the name Deira. But if you create it as a non-celtic it should reverse back to York

Oh, my bad, I answered too quickly. I checked again, and it's when a non anglo-saxon character is either the duke or the top liege of the anglo-saxon duke that the name becomes York again. My guess is that the dev thought that "York" was too modern for the Anglo-Saxon era, so they changed it for a more accurate one at the time. It's basically the same thing for France as West Francia and Germany as East Francia when ruled by Karlings

Yes it is an addition of the latest patch.
If Lotharingia/Middle Francia is not held by a Karling, it becomes Austrasia, much like West Francia becomes France and East Francia becomes Germany.

York is the bastardization the of the Norse word Jorvik. If you play on the 867 start date, you see a Viking named Halfdan as the petty king of Jorvik.

Deira was an ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdom that essentially encompassed what we later came to call the duchy of York. The kingdom of Deira merged with another Anglo-Saxon kingdom named Bernicia to form the kingdom of Northumbria.
