I have now started a second Duchy of Uppland game, as the first one had a weird bug (armies just disappeared - or never appeared on the screen when I summoned them, though they seemed to be there in-game, as I lost money for their upkeep).

So I am now back around 1080 and still sitting tight in Uppland, slowly gathering cash and upgrading my provinces. I have 3 sons so far, one of them getting to be a nice warfare specialist soon...

In the former game I was around 1100 already but no major struggles happened... Some southern kingdoms declared war on Sweden (and me I guess) and king Erik was in war and mobilizing (I allowed him to), but still...

Just wanted to make sure that such a progress is relatively normal for that region?

I know I could perhaps get around beating some of the northern Sami tribes (I tried, true, but that was BEFORE i read about timing your siege victory with sueing for peace right before your liege does if first, etc.)...

If I understand you right, you want to know if Sweden/Scandinavia is a relative peaceful area at game start?? .. then yes. Sometimes I have seen a little internal conflict in Sweden, and once in a while Norway have invaded. But in general, there is not much conflict with the other christian nations in the baltics.

That is basically what I wanted to know :)

For this region I guess I will need the hit-and-run tactic, until I can muster some more provinces, more prestige and be able to slowly destabilize Sweden (and tackle Norway, Denmark etc.).

About that bug of yours:

I have now started a second Duchy of Uppland game, as the first one had a weird bug (armies just disappeared - or never appeared on the screen when I summoned them, though they seemed to be there in-game, as I lost money for their upkeep).

Some southern kingdoms declared war on Sweden (and me I guess) and king Erik was in war and mobilizing (I allowed him to), but still...

Did you try the mobilization before or after you let your liege borrow use your troops? Because it sounds to me like you tried to raise your troops while they were still out fighting for the king. If so, then that's not a bug. The king is simply a bastard and sticks you with the bill even though you have no control over your troops. Still this iisn't much of a problem since you can easily counter this by simply lowering your army maintenance to 0 to force him to pay anyway.

By the way, why destabilize Sweden? It's an elective kingdom and unless things change, you're the next ruler. Just wait to inherit the crown, let things settle and then change the ruling law. If you want to be sure that you stay next in line for the throne you can try to grab a province or two in Norrland or Finland (just be sure to time your peace deals carefully) but other than that you can just sit and wait for the old bastard* to croak. Or help him on the way if you prefer that route.

*According to some sources Eriks father and mother were stepsiblings, making their marriage void. Of course the sources concerning this period in swedish history are unreliable at best.

Brettmo,

the bug appeared also in a completely new game - I tested it after I got it in the first Uppland one. And it was the same... Possibly something was overwritten somewhere in a file...

As to the whole inheritance thingie - I get the basic hang of it, but is there a comprehensive guide besides the short FAQ (and the nice pictures in the CK Help 1.05)? Not only for the basic function of the various laws of succession, but also on in-game usage and examples and such?

I don't know any comprehensive guide on succession laws, but you may find this discussion useful.

Thx!

Read it but have yet to wrap my head around some things there...

I guess I will soon start a new topic on that but with specifics and (also questions about) in-game use...
