Starting as Rhodri the Great in 867, I find I have a strong claim to this dead title. What's that about? How do I recreate it? I've conquered Man, does that change anything?

You can't as the title is titular and it can't be recreated at all. He only haves the claim because of his father holding the title in history files. Its still destroyed before the son could even inherite it.
Yep its a ghost claim you could even have a claim on a de jure title that doesn't have an holder and you can't really do anything with it anyway. Title needs a holder to have use of the claim.
Yeah, that´s the DeJure duchy of the isles. There´s another (christian) titular duchy of the Isles
It will be called Western Isles when non-scandinavian culture holds the title. So no norse, norwegian, danish or swedish character.
Seems almost like a bug/oversight if anything. The two titles should be one and the same, and Rhodri should have a claim on the Duchy of Sudreyar then. After all, when his father owned it "The Isles" was not titular, it was the actual land. Ivar took it and decided to call it Sudreyar. It's still the same land, and the same title.

I completely agree with you. In game you need to do a number of unintuitive and illogical things.
1) Spend a lot of time and money to fabricate claim on county of Mann.
2) Conquer it.
3) Spend some more money to create duchy of Mann.
4) Now I have the duchy of my father. My Casus Belli now can be pressed... wait, I already have the land. And no money. Damn.
You don't get a lower price for creating your claimed duchy.
Without claim you would do the same thing, just without a headache from questions.
I don't know why developers did this. I guess there was a reason, I just can't realize one.
Can you holy-war for it? I don't remember if the Norse rulers are Catholic or Germanic.
Ruler of Mann is a vassal of nearby chief. Both of them are Norse pagans, but for some reason I can't declare holy war on anyone. Just "No valid Casus Belli".

You need to share a border with the target duchy to use a holy war until crusades unlock, unless the target or attacker is Muslim in which case you can attack across up to two sea zones. Where are you located?

Based on that map, my suggestion is to fabricate a claim and conquer Ulaidh (c_ulster) to your northwest. That will get you a "land" border (across a strait) with County Argyle, the southern half of d_isles, and thereby unlock the CB.
That's assuming they don't get nailed by Scotland or convert to Catholicism before you get there, of course, though if they do I think you'll be able to just use your existing claim.
