End of an Era
shield_pom.gif

Joachim of the Greif was the head of his House for nearly three decades. Without any doubts he made it stronger than ever in the past and perhaps future. His deeds turned Pommern into a major player in the Holy Roman Empire and Europe. Greifs married into several prominent families; among them, von Wittesbach, von Kuster, de Berri, d’Anjou, di Savoia, von Hohenzollern, creating strong bonds of blood and friendship. Prestige and power, safety and sense of pride, wealth and stability, these were the factors Pommeranians owed to Joachim. With his death many started to wonder, is it going to end? Will Joachim’s inheritance survive without his strong leadership? There are many indecisive voices, but the fact is there are some ready to light the keg of powder and take a small piece of this tasty Griffon pie; and there are others to defend it.

MODIFIERS:
Event triggered by death of Joachim of the Greif.
+1 to roll for continued good RP*.

TABLE:

1. All people are scared, from highest ranking nobles to most simple folks. Many see the omens of falling Griffon, others can clearly see the decline in trade, some already witnessed increased bandit and rouges activity on the roads, not to mention nobility arguing over everything. It is said that one man made a prophecy - “Tremble in fear, with Joachim “The Strong” gone, 7 years of crop failures are going to some.”
(-1 morale to Pommern for 1.5 years/6 turns)

2. Many people are scared, from highest ranking nobles to most simple folks. Some see the omens of falling Griffon, others can clearly see the decline in trade and already witnessed increased bandit and rouges activity on the roads, not to mention nobility arguing over everything.
(-1 morale to Pommern for 1 year/4 turns)

3. Some people are scared, from highest ranking nobles to most simple folks. Some of them can clearly see the decline in trade, others already witnessed increased bandit and rouges activity on the roads, not to mention nobility arguing over petty matters.
(-1 morale to Pommern for 6 months/2 turns)

4. People are indifferent, not sure what to think. “Time will tell” they say.
(no effect)

5. A lot of people feel sorry for the loss of their leader but feel certain that everthing will go well. Generally there is nothing to worry about. What is more, we should look with confidence in the future!
(+1 morale to Pommern for 6 months/2 turns)

6. “Griffon blood lives and returns to Pommerania! King is dead, long live the King!” People mourn the loss of their leader but look with confidence into the future.
(+1 morale to Pommern for 1 year/4 turns)

ROLL: 2 + 1 = 3

RESULT:
Some people are scared, from highest ranking nobles to most simple folks. Some of them can clearly see the decline in trade, others already witnessed increased bandit and rouges activity on the roads, not to mention nobility arguing over petty matters.
(-1 morale to Pommern for 6 months/2 turns)

Table as requested by Longinus.

Greif-Anjou connection

Under siege

Phantasm said:
Parley

Three large men approach with appearances of little consequence which spoke that they were men of little consequence. The one in the centre hailed the Captain from a distance.

"There is nothing that shall stop the fall of this fortress now save the hand of God Himself! Come with us and at least you know your life will be spared. Or you may choose to return and inform your King to prepare his armies for surrender to save the lives of many who needn't die for a traitor and conspirator."

Henryk was looking at the messengers with cold hatred and disgust. ”We’ll see about that” he hissed and spat to the moat. Moments later he could be seen heading towards his headquarters.

*****

Yolande was singing an old French lullaby to young Renatus when Henryk entered the chamber silently. It struck him as a lighting, the scene, the setting, it happened before, somewhere in the past. Yet the words were different, and the voice. Rarely was Henryk experiencing emotions of such intensity. Alas he shook his head and flicked the feelings away, “no sentiments” that was one of this prime sayings.

He stepped to his study trying to forget the emotions and focus on the reality, and the reality was grim. He quickly went through the newest reports from all Naples, their enemies were coming from all sides, pressing them hard. Just recently they lost the last chance to stand up to them, mainly because the monies from the royal treasury remained unspent. He was looking at the map now, soon everything might end, burying not only d’Anjous but Henryk’s ambitions as well. He sat on the stool.

Few minutes passed and Henryk was still thinking about various options, finally with slight grimace on his face he took the quill and started to write on the preachment.

”Onto Christine von Wittelsbach, Dowager Duchess of Pommernia and lady of many other titles and qualities,

Mother,

I am writing to you from Naples where situation looks grimmer with everyday. Aragonese and Sicillian scum, having abandoned their war against Muslim heathens, decided to target easier pray, that is House d’Anjou and its head King Rene.

We are besieged and according to my estimation I can give Naples no more than four months of solid defence, after that we will fall and together with us the honour of Pommernia will be greatly damaged. Despite my pleas, king Rene decided against writing a letter to you by himself, he is too much of a proud man, similar to Joachim in many ways. Yet we looked for Pommernian knights on the fields of Naples never to witness their presence. What of the union between Greif and Anjou? What of the blood ties? What of my wife and first-born son? Does it not matter anymore?

Christine, while mourning Joachim, my father and your husband, you forgot about other obligations, about alliances, promises and oaths given before Almighty God. Thus I call Pommernian Griffons to fulfil their duties toward House d’Anjou and its own kin, son, even if adopted, of Joachim and Christine, duke and duchess of Pommernia.

Should you ignore this call, be cursed our name for it will mean that word of the House of the Greif means less than ink and ash that was used to write it upon the preachment.

I will propose King Rene to withdraw to Provance, France or even Pommern soon. We might not have other chance of survival.

We await the word from Stettin,

Written by his own hand,

In the hour of need in Naples,

Henryk of the Greif.

*****

It took less than two weeks for speedy messengers to deliver this letter to Pommerania.

Christine read it three times, trying to decipher every meaning of this message, and the importance of it. Henryk has always given Christine the shivers, he was unpredictable and always followed his own agenda. However, the letter seemed sincere and was bringing up few important points as well. Soon it was to be presented before the most prominent heads in Pommernia. Through strange coincidence, the day when the letter arrived was the first day of huge meeting of all Pommernian dukes and other landlords from all over House of Greif possessions.

The Council of Pommeranian Dukes

zamek2.jpg

The Pommernian Dukes’ Castle in Stettin

“Finally, they have all gathered”
sighed Christine siliently, while observing the nobles swarming in the Great Hall of the ducal palace. Almost all key persons for the entire House of the Grief were in fact present. Branim, Duke of Rügen was looking at Christine with slight amusement, while simultaneously, Boguslav, Duke of Stolp and Stargard was looking at his cousin disapprovingly. Wratislav returned him the look and smirked. Christine was sure that she could count at least on Boguslav. Wratislav, Duke of Wolgast entered the chamber and immediately joined with the emissaries from Poznan, as usual they had their own agenda. Count Piotr Podewils herbu Kasztan from far Kexholm was near them, sipping wine from his goblet. Count Ludwig von Drakenberg, representative of the Hannoverian diets was talking silently with Henning von Schwerin, Count of Ingermanland. In the far cornet of the hall were seated the burghers from Danzig, Visby and Narva, even though sometimes against one another, they were always in one group. There were also some Swedes sent by Marius of the Greif, but they didn’t enjoy any social talk, awaiting the beginning of the meeing. Finally, there was Christine, occupying the chair next to the empty Ducal throne, where Joachim and all his predecessors used to sit. She stood up and her voice resonated through the room.

“All right Your Graces, there is no point to wait any longer, we might as well commence the meeting.”

And so it begun.

*****

They were obviously testing her, trying how sharp she was if she could bite back and bark. Fortunately she was aware of that. Still, although she was a harder material than many expected, even though she still was the famous Lioness of Pfaltz, they did manage to make so breach in her “defensive walls”. To her disappointment only Boguslav seemed to stand firmly by her, rest was to best degree “uncertain”. The bickered about many things, checking her knowledge and mediating skills, there were some petty things to deal with, some quarrels and some petitions.

“Good God, how did Joachim manage to deal with them?”

She sipped some diluted wine from her goblet in order to cover her fatigue. Finally she decided to show them the letter from Naples, it was about the right time.

The hell broke loose for a short period of time, at first many voices of disagreement arose, even though many did not have a single idea regarding the war in Naples, they did want to say something. To Christine’s surprise, all three Pommernian dukes agreed that the help need to be provided. Boguslav and Branim, were obviously unhappy about sharing the same opinion on the matter. Wratislav had some reservations at first, strengthened by Poznan’s nobles, who didn’t want to commit their monies for such enterprise, yet Greif blood and honour won the day, especially after he witnessed Boguslav and Branim agreeing on the matter.

In a matter of two hours everthing was agreed. Christine was to send a warning letter to Aragon. Simultaneously, a detachment of Pommern knights and, to cite Wratsilav, “This Band of Hawk, these mercenaries whose King Joachim was so fond of” were to send to Naples immediately under the leadership of Boguslav’s son, Georg, and Hans Wickelbruch Yon Koln, well-known condottiere. They were to be supplied with monies, best equipment and allowed to hire other mercenaries while approaching Italy. They were also agree sent letters to those lords who were ruling the lands on their way, in order to secure the best conditions and supplies.

It was a venturesome and dangerous mission for Aimone d’Aymaville, personal courier of the Duchess of Piedmonte. He grumbled quite a lot on the way - adventures like sneaking in besieged cities through ruined Roman aqueducts weren’t of his liking at all, especially since he was a distinguished gentleman of forty years old. But he did complete his mission anyway, delivering his mistress’ letter to Prince Henryk of the Greif - though if he peeked in the short note, he would have cursed her for sending him on a mission like this for such an insipid message.

Into the own hands of His Serene and August Highness Henryk of the Greif, Prince Imperial, Prince of Pommerania, Count of Spychow and Louhans.

By God’s blood, I’m just prattling and prating, while your life is endangered. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. Forgive your silly kid sister, I didn’t know the situation was this severe. If only you or your in-law father asked for help, I would have given you everything. God, I guess that man is proud indeed. Such men ruin the world. The world of mine, that’s it.

Anyway, all is not lost that is delayed. They say history repeats itself. This time it will not.

A thick sheef of parchment bearing a the Papal seal of Nicholas V boiled in red wax and the arms of the Holy Father. It reads thusly:

Arms_of_Pope_Nicholas_V.jpg

"Principes Orbi Terrae,

Through the revelations of the living Word of Him who sitting at the right hand of the Father passed to Peter the Keys of Heaven, granting him viceregal authority over all the laws of men and angels and observing the moral decay of Christendom and the weakening of our strength against the Mohammedans, I, fifth to serve and be called Nicholas, command the following:

The Presence of Blanca d'Trastamara, Rene d'Anjou, and Basil Palaelogos-Trastamara in Praha to be held in account for the catastrophic war between supposed men of God and the subsequent defeat before the arms of men of the Morning Star. Representatives of these three may come in their stead, but their words and actions bear the full weight of their masters' doom.

The Presence of Ladislav von Wittelsbach, Frederick von Wittelsbach, and Christine von Wittelsbach or their chosen representatives to discuss the resolution of the Algerian war against the Holy See and the people of God.

The Baptism of Basil Palaelogos-Trastamara and his entrance into communion with the Holy See in Rome.

The Cessation of Martial Operations between the Crowns of Aragon, Sicily, and Naples. The troops of Pommerania and Bohemia are requested to lodge in Naples, in preparation for the resolution of the hostility of the Algerians, who having taken dominion over faithful Christians still hold a state of war with the Holy See.

To allow for the safe conduct of the eminent sons of the Church who must appear before His Holiness to receive blessings and castigations, all summoned shall bring an escort appropriate to their station but respectful of the grace and eminence of their host Ladislavus Rex.

Faultering grossly from this path shall imperil the wayward souls with hellfire as they wander further from the salvation of Christ's Church.

Ad Maiorem Gloriam Dei,
Dictated in Praha by,

Nicholas P.P. V

A letter arives from Sicily,

"To the Dukes and Duchess of Pommerania,

What a disgusting act treachery you have just committed. After I send my representative to Bohemia to meet with yours in peace, so ordered by his Holiness himself, you have the audacity to declare war on me. If you spit on this truce that I thought was in place, then so do I. Southern Italy is no place for Germans.

Another memorandum arrives bearing the Papal seal of Nicholas V for the Dowager Duchess Christine. It reads:

Arms_of_Pope_Nicholas_V.jpg

"Meus carissimus Christina,

Cher cousin, you must needs send a man or come yourself to Praha so that we might discuss the fate of the Neapolitan Crown. Already, representatives from Sicily have arrived and we must commence with the mediation of this dispute before further bloodshed occurs.

The troops that hold allegiance to the Griffon of Pommern must not advance past Naples, and should not engage the armies of Aragon or Sicily unless they do not withdraw to Apulia. You may relieve your son in Naples, but I will not have unnecessary bloodshed. I will require an oath on your part, that your troops do not seek to invade Sicily or the lands of Aragon, and only to relieve Naples.

As you know, rightfully the Sicilians are fearful of the armies of Pommern. You must assure them that you will not damage the Kingdom of Sicily properly. King Basil shall be baptised soon in the Catholic faith, and I am eager to have his faith blossom not die.

Although, I am loathe to do injury to you, my beloved cousin, my conscious compels me to remind you that the punishment for disobedience is the imperilment of your soul. Eagerly, I wait for the arrival of you or your man in Praha.

Ad Maiorem Gloriam Dei!

Cordially,

Nicholas P.P. V"

Casimir of the Greif

Do you remember what you said on the San Leandro, when we had both almost gotten swept off the deck by that wave? ‘Fate has something grander in store for the both of us’. Indeed, dear Casimir, it is decidedly so. You are a Duke, newly arrived at a grand inheritance, whilst I struggle for my own heritage, a legitimate ruler cast as an exile. That I write this is a sign of the dire straits I am in. I would never in all my pride succumb to such a letter if the circumstances did not desperately cry out. Casimir, you of all understand my dreams and my ambitions. I am a Prince and now a King, by the laws of God and of man, yet I am denied. I am forced to subsist on the...good will...of those few loyal nobles left in this kingdom.

Portugal is beset by another usurper, this time from within the House of Duarte itself. Joao, who I refer to now as the Pretender, is a Duarte...but not
the Duarte. I will not submit to him. No King would. Friend, strange are the circumstances that brought you to Portugal. The time spent on the high seas, battling the wind, our poor navigational skills, and the bellowing of Prince Enrique and the other captains, taught me that you have the conscience to know what is right and what is just. Casimir, I tell you know that my cause IS right. And it IS just. I beseech you to do what you can for my cause. My hour is approaching a precipice and I need the aid of those I hold in high regard. Please, dear Casimir. Spirit your courage and your fortitude to me. Convince those in Pommerania and in Europe that Portugal is under the grip of another grave injustice.

I trust that this letter finds you well and in good health. I mourn the loss of your father as does any true friend of character. Give my best to your mother, may she remain strong in troubled times. And you, my friend. Keep well to the principles we learned and shared. You do have something grand in store for you. And with your help, so will I.

Prince Alfonso Duarte

Correspondance from the East...

"The Illustrious House of Grief,

I wish that you might undestand my confusion as to whom this would be best addressed to. Word out of Pommern has been few and far between over the past years and the unfortunate and sobering death of the Patriarch of your family, a man whom I never knew but respected greatly only adds to the confusion It seems an undying feature of the relationship of Pskov-Novgorod and Pommern that there will always be unfinished business between us.

This is a feature that has not changed but only intensified of late. I am pregnant and shall bare child soon, so immediately may not be the best time, but soon it would be our pleasure to host a representation of Pommern and her noble ruling house so that we may begin to work on this 'unfinished business'. Our realms have always been cordial, at times allies, I look forward to the cotinuation of these things.

Respectfully,
Mina Andreyevna, Grand Princess of Pskov-Novgorod and Tver"

A letter arrived from Brandenburg

colgrsm.gif

Onto Casimir of the Greif,

Long have the house of Greif and the house of Hohenzollern had close ties. Especially is this true for me, as I was not only allowed to marry your aunt, but also counted your father as a close friend. It was with great sadness that I received news of his passing.

We do not know each other very well, but I hope this can be rectified. Both for our own sakes and to continue and strengthen the ties between our two houses. Perhaps we could arrange a meeting sometime soon, so that this may happen.

May God be with you, and may your reign in Pommerania be as fruitful as your fathers.

- Johann von Hohenzollern

Correspondance from the East...

"Dowager Duchesse, Lady Christine von Grief-Wittelsbach,

Its come to my attention that the Trubetskoi organization and this Kremlin have come to an agreement with the Viceroyalty of Sweden for a joint effort to facilitate the travel of resources from Finland to the markets of Pskova and Novgorod. This effort involves the improvement and standardization of waterways connecting the Finnish lands in question to our markets. Such an effort requires work to be done in the lands of collectively known as Kexholm. We simply seek permission that hirelings of this Kremlin and the Trubetskoi organization may join the Swedish workers in this region for the project at hand.

This matter aside, I hope that, my pregnancy now past I may have the pleasure of meeting with a representitive of your family for more in depth discussions of the region, our mutual beliefs and desires. I trust you understand that it is much to our preferrance to handle it in this manner as opposed to we sending an agent to Stettin. The last couple occasions, that proved a most unfruitful tactic.

Written with sincere admiration by her hand in Pskova,
Mina Andreyevna Polotovsksaya, Grand Princess of Pskov-Novgorod and Tver"

I do would like to have you now by my side in this time of great need. The times when I was a prince of Portugal, ended, instead of the Castle of Lisbon I have a small house in the cold north of Portugal.
Please understand Casimir that I ask for you help, because you are really the only one I can trust, the only one who can help me. I fear for my life and the life of my sister, Elinor. I don't want to run away from MY country. But maybe this is not safe anymore.
I hoped that you could help me negotiating something with the usurper João. I don't see him giving up power and already the people seem to have forgotten my great father and his family and accepting this João as their King. He is to powerful for that right now. But with your helping me, protecting me, I am sure He will not dare to kill me nor my sister. Please Casimir help me.
Also I hope that your coronoation as Duke will go in a beautiful fashion, I would love to be next to you seeing that moment. So that in the moment after I could Hug you will all my love I feel for you.

Onto His Most Serene and August Highness Henryk of the Greif, Prince Imperial, Count of Spychow and Louhans, Knight of the Most Illustrious Order of the Golden Fleece.

Your Highness,

I write to you in French today, for I do not know the German language, and since I wish to write clearly and quickly at once, without risking that I would be misunderstandable, I choose my mothertongue rather than anything else.

Although the rebellion against His Majesty Louis de Berry was indeed supposed to be but a minor uprising, now we have to face it: this is not a peasant revolt. His Majesty probably tried to hide the real extent of the revolts. As it has turned out, this rebellion of nobles led by Count Charles of Nevers and a swindler posing as Prince Philippe de Berry was passively supported by the Lords of the Directoire. We may call it a révolution.

On the night of 6th November, A.D.1453, the rebels took Dijon by treachery. The leaders of the rebels claim they imprisoned the entire royal family, and also that King Louis has abdicated. However, the man I have sent to ransom the royal family did not succeeed -- while I was ready to offer truly much. Further, reliable sources claim that His Majesty Louis de Berry was killed by Charles of Nevers. The fate of Her Majesty and the children is mostly unknown. Some claim she was executed along with her husband, others say she is actually on the side of the rebels, others say she fled Dijon on that night. The second variant I cannot believe, mostly because I reckon she would have at least notified us; the first option is more likely, but I believe the third one to be true. Many claim there is a blood-money of 2500 florins offered for the head of hers. I know nothing more about the whereabouts or state of health of Her Majesty and the children.

My attempts at negotiations with the rebels have not yielded success up to this time. Also, here in the Piedmont, the Council of Counts had the Meeting of States assemblied, and right now it is debated whether a new regent should be elected for His Grace Joachim de Savoie or not. Further, I fear the Meeting of States will declare Her Majesty and the ducal children all dead, this way giving the coronet to Duke Amédée de Savoie. There are also many other perils here, the details of which I would rather tell in person. I already called my vassals to arms.

I await the arrival of Your Highness with the greatest expectations. There will always be shelters for Your Higness in the Piedmont -- if not in Turin, then in Saluces.

I sincerely hope your wife and children are all well, etc. etc.

Written in Turin, A.D. MCDLIV.

The Lecture

Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Present day.

( … )

Professor Tadeusz Gryfita was slowly scanning the crowd of students before him, with each and every lecture, more and more of them were coming. He grinned, once again he was doing his mission, to show them that history was alive and integral part of their life, he always tried to reach this goal during his lectures.

”Ladies and Gentlemen, as you might remember I have promised you during our last meeting, a deep insight into the political situation of Pommerania in 50’s of the XV century. That I will describe the factions and notable persons living there at that time.” He grinned. ”Well, a promise is a promise and today I shall gladly do so.”

He looked at the window, there was no sunshine today, heavy clouds gathered outside the the building.

”It seems that there is not need today to close the curtains and indeed doing so would make Pommeranian case even darker as if it wasn’t difficult enough. Casmir, Joachim’s first-born, was back from Portugal, falling right into deep water, where his desires meant very little. Fortunately for him, he did learn something in Iberian seas, he learnt how to battle the storms.”

Professor Gryfita turned on the over head projector and enjoyed the fist picture, which represented a young man in his 20’s.

”Enjoy the lecture ladies and gentlemen.”

Factions and Dramatis Personae of the Pommeranian Court

1684_Stettin.gif

Casmir VI of the Greif, King of Sweden, Duke of Pommerania and Fürst of the House of the Greif, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, Grubenhagen and Wolfenbüttel, Duke of Poznan, Margrave of Danzig, Prince-Protector of Sweden, Overlord of Ingermanland, Kexholm, Memel and Gotland, Master of the Imperial Hunt, Master of the Imperial Hunt and Prince of the Holy Roman Empire.

Casmir is the first born of Joachim, former Emperor and Christine von Witteslabch “The Lioness of Pflatz”. He was being raised in the atmosphere of glamour and slendour, aware of his trumendous heritage and blood running in his veins. His childhood was definitely a happy one, without any problems and worries at all, not knowing about the cruelties of the outside world. Even though Joachim was known as a harsh man to everybody, he was very soft and caring toward his immediate family (historian say that it was due to his own childhood, his own father was aloof and cruel man, not very caring for young Joachim, it is said that after becoming father himself, Joachim simply wanted to be the best for his children).

However, Joachim knew very well that his son is growing to be a weak one, without a necessary backbone, with weak personality. Casmir was too much interested in poetry and arts, not in horses and swords. This made Joachim to send his son away, where, he though, he would become tougher and more independent. He sent him to faraway Portugal, to the court of his good friend, Reginald of Witau.

Casmir was terrified at first, but his attitude quickly changed during his few months travel through Europe, where he saw miracles he never saw in Nurnberg. Reaching Portugal was just a culmination of his journey, almost like a climax. It had tremendous effect on his future upbringing.

He spent 6 long years there, learning the language and culture, becoming fascinated with Portugal and its people, falling in love with the sea and sailing, finally becoming almost obsessed with science and arts. Without doubts Casmir became one of the first truly Renaissance men from Pommerania. He befriended there with Reginald’s son Alphoso, to the point where they called each other “brothers” He benefited a lot from the stay there, he indeed became tougher as he passed through storms of such magnitude that many bravest knights would simply pass out, his became firmer in his decisions and thoughts. Alas, he could have been easily influenced and steered, he relayed on the words of his advisors a lot, especially if he didn’t know much on the discussed topic, it was good in many ways, but turned against him regarding other issues.

Casmir is an optimistic and lively young man, who cares for his friends and family a lot. To many Pommeranian nobles dislike, he is regarded as more Portuguese than German/Pommernian, he sometimes needs to speak closely in order to be understood, he uses some Portuguese expressions in his language and even his accent is Iberian.

All factions in the court try to influence him and made making some moves they like.

He has however his own agenda:

- positive towards Hansa
- zealously promotes the idea of Atlantic Exploration
- strongly supports trade
- strongly supports development of the infrastructure
- neutral (to negative) towards the maintenance of a Strong Church
- zealously supports Involvement in the Iberia

Christine von der Grief-Wittelsbach, Dowager Duchesse of Pommerania.
“The Greifs”

A clever and graceful woman, who was born in Rheinland Platinate and fell in love in Joachim of the Greif, luckily, that was one of few happy relationship of that time, when the feelings could match the politicks. Her quick mind immediately found a kindred spirit in that of Joachim the Greif, and there marriage has been a happy one. Knowledgeable in the customs, manners, and languages of the French, Italians, Spaniards, English, and even Poles, she used to serve primarily as a hostess and de facto diplomat ensuring the love of foreign dignitaries for Heidelburg and the Rheinland. In her domestic role, she spun a web of friendships and favors with the noblewomen of Rheinpfalz, trying to build further support for her late brother, incidentally, her role in Stettin and later Nurnberg was almost the same. She has no great love for the Empire, seeing the Emperor and Imperial Diet as less than useless outdated institutions only hampering everything around, especially her family, as Joachim was almost stolen away from her by the purple. The Church she views with a quiet pious devotion largely private from the rest of her life. Hers is the faith of the contemplative and the mystic, not the missionary or prelate.

After the death of Joachim, she mourned his loss a lot. However, she found her solace in involving more in governing the Pommerania and keeping the nobles at bay. She is skilled politician and saw enough in her life to do this effectively. She also is widely respected by everybody, House of the Greif definitely consider her one of themselves.

Along with Duke Boguslaw, she is a leader of “The Greifs” faction.

tn_chambersBogSTAST.jpg

1685_Stargard.gif

Boguslaw IX of the Greif, Duke of Stargard and Stolp.
“The Greifs”

Duke Boguslw is the oldest and most powerful of all Pommeranian dukes and Casmir’s uncles. He was always very loyal to Joachim and after his demise this loyalty was transferred on Chrstine and her children.

He is, like Joachim was, a man with strong principles and stiff neck, an old fashion knight, who believes in cavalry charges and code of honour. Truly and a member of “an old guard”. He witnessed House of Greif climbing to the peak of its power and actively helped in doing so, leading Pommern knights and providing Joachim with his private funds. Even though he isn’t the best politician he is respected in Pommerania, especially due to his heroic deeds and fearsome reputation.

His branch was usually kept very good relations with Macklenburg dynasty.

“The Greifs” faction holds GREAT influence at court.

- positive towards Hansa
- favours Germanic States
- favours Bohemia
- neutral (to positive) towards Poland
- neutral (to positive) towards Lithuania
- neutral (to positive) towards Rus
- favours the involvement in Scandinavia
- supports trade
- neutral toward the development of the infrastructure
- favours the maintenance of a Strong Church
- cautious towards the involvement in the Iberia
- cautious towards the idea of Atlantic Exploration

tn_burgomasWratislawWOL.jpg

1682_Wolgast.gif

Wratislaw IX of the Greif, Duke of Wolgast.
“The Slavs”

Duke Wratislaw’s lands borders traditionally Polish ones, there still is a considerable number of Pommeranians who are more Slavic than German, his lands successfully defend against German colonization and culture. Duke Wratislaw himself indeed feels more like a Slav and insist on using Pommeranian/Polish native tongue in his court, constantly referring to House of the Greif as to the House of Gryfitów.

He cooperate with Poznan’s nobility a lot, even visits their Diet and participates there as a honorary guest. His words weights a lot in this wealthy province. Wratislaw is also a huge supporter of the close alliance with Poland and House of Jagiellon in general, opposing the idea of further integration with the Holy Roman Empire.

“The Slavs” faction holds SOME influence at court.

- neutral towards Hansa
- dislikes Germanic States
- favours Bohemia
- greatly favours Poland
- favours Lithuania
- positive towards Rus
- neutral towards the involvement in Scandinavia
- supports trade
- neutral toward the development of the infrastructure
- greately favours the maintenance of a Strong Church
- dislikes the idea of involvement in the Iberia
- dislikes the idea of Atlantic Exploration

tn_portrait5BarRUG.jpg

1686_Rugen.gif

Barnim VIII of the Greif, Duke of Rügen,
“I don’t give a fuck”

Even though Duke Barnim is the weakest of all Pommeranian dukes, he does hold a considerable power in the court and council. He traditionally has the best relations and contact with Scandinavian nobility, being interrelated to many of them, especially with the Gotlanders. His island is one of the most difficult places to conquer, and was a good stand for Greifs for many years.

Duke Barnim is a dissolute man, who likes having good fun and throws loud and decadent parties. He loves hunting and sailing. He is also interested in astrology and alchemy; many rumours claim that he is very much into dark arts. Some even claim that he is a pagan deep in his heart as his domain was once one of the last stands of Pagans in the area. To nobody’s surprise, Barnim hates clergy, whom he loudly calls “a band of leeches”, many heard him talking warmly about the Hussites in Bohemia.

“I don’t give a fuck” faction holds SOME influence at court.

- positive towards Hansa
- doesn’t give a f**k about Germanic States
- doesn’t give a f**k about Bohemia
- doesn’t give a f**k about Poland
- doesn’t give a f**k about Lithuania
- neutral towards Rus
- favours the involvement in Scandinavia
- supports trade
- doesn’t give a f**k about the development of the infrastructure
- greatly f***s the maintenance of a Strong Church
- f***s the idea of involvement in the Iberia
- f***s the idea of Atlantic Exploration

Henning von Schwerin, Count of Ingermanland.
“The Far Marches”

A member of one of the most powerful Houses in Pommerania, which was always loyal to the House of the Greif. As the reward, they received a whole county as their new fief. Henning is a skilled administrator and generally performs well. He encourages German settlement and gives a lot of tax cuts to those brave ones who decide to travel here from the Empire.

Due to the proximity and recent marriage, he is allied with Piotr Podewils, Count of Kexholm.

tn_05portraPiotrKEX.jpg

tn_va_karjamodKEX.jpg

Piotr Podewils herbu Kasztan, Count of Kexholm.
“The Far Marches”

Even though Kexholm and Karelia are the poorest and lowest populated of all Greifs’ domains, there were plenty of men ready to take the title of its counts. One of them was Piotr Podewils, a member of very prominent family from Poznan, which supported Greifs in their wars against Denmark and Austria. After investing some more money, (Joachim was short on ducats at that time) they received Kexholm as a fief, trying to make it useful.

Though Piotr did not like to be placed there and treat the whole enterprise as an exile rather. Still he tries to find a place for him in these cold and empty lands.

“The Far Marches” faction holds SOME to LITTLE influence at court.

- favours Hansa
- positive towards Germanic States
- neutral towards Bohemia
- neutral towards Poland
- cautious towards Lithuania
- positive towards Rus
- favours the involvement in Scandinavia
- supports trade
- supports the development of the infrastructure
- neutral toward the maintenance of a Strong Church
- dislikes the idea of involvement in the Iberia
- dislikes the idea of Atlantic Exploration

tn_09perugiDANZIG.jpg

tn_herbgdansDANZIG.jpg

Freistadt Danzig
“The Merchants”

Danziger merchants usually contributes a great deal of monies to the ducal coffers, so, unsurprisingly they do have quite a big sway in the court. Usually however, they support the Greifs (unless they hear of some insane ideas) as they experience good protection and prosperity under their rule.

“The Merchants” faction holds SOME to LITTLE influence at court.

- favours Hansa
- favours Germanic States
- positive towards Bohemia
- positive towards Poland
- neutral towards Lithuania
- neutral towards Rus
- neutral towards the involvement in Scandinavia
- zealously supports trade
- supports the development of the infrastructure
- neutral towards the maintenance of a Strong Church
- dislikes the idea of involvement in the Iberia
- cautious towards the idea of Atlantic Exploration

tn_selfport3FredMEM.jpg

tn_memelMEMEL.jpg

Friedrich von Hohenzolern, Duke of Memel.
“The Hohenzollerns”

This man is very old and has seen enough in his life. He almost completely withdrawn from the political life, being defeated several times and admitting this like a knight he used to be. In the brief moment when he remembers that he actually has something to say, he does so, usually supporting the Greifs to the extent they require.

Recently however, after the death of Joachim, Fredrich became a bit more active, many claims that it is the fault of his son, who seems to be more ambitious than his old father. In these days, Memel usually sticks with Danzigers or seeks commong ground with Toutonic cities, “Far Marches” faction is also a good option.

“The Hohenzollerns” faction holds LITTLE influence at court.

0162_Brunswick.gif
0163_Lunebourg.gif

“The Hannoverians”

Their Diet is something to be reckoned with… at least sometimes. They rarely have much to say though, though they do not like to go on wars far away or spend their monies on insane enterprises. Germany is their home after all.

“The Hannoverians” faction holds LITTLE influence at court.

tn_henryk.jpg

Henryk of the Greif, Count of Spychow and Louhans, Knight of the Most Illustrious Order of the Golden Fleece.

Henryk (in Polish) or Hainrich, was born in Wielkopolska in Poland, being the son of Jurand count of Spychow and Josefina, sister of Joachim of the Greif. During the great plague of 1427, both of his parents died and he was adopted by Joachim and Christine.

Even though he was given the best care and both step-parents truly loved him, Henryk did not bother much for this. He was aloof and always observing others carefully, rarely speaking aloud, and if he did so, he sounded much more mature than he actually was. Later he stayed in the shadow of other Pommernian princes. Henryk did never like his step-brothers and sisters, secretly envying them their childhood and future. Joachim, however, quickly recognized his bitter attitude and preferred him away from the court, sending him on numerous diplomatic or war missions all over Europe. To say the least, Henryk enjoyed this thoughtfully. Among his best ones could be mentioned the mission in Dijon, where he befriended with King Louis and received numerous privileges from him, including the title of count of Louhans, and his deeds during the wars with Austria, where he led a considerable detachment of Pommeranian army. These enterprises proved well that he is both good diplomat and knight. His analytic nature and willingness to learn, brought much profit to him during that time.

He did not opposed a match the Joachim found for him, that is the oldest daughter of King Rene d’Anjou, Yolande. Since the marriage he spent most of his time in the domain of his father-in-law, where he feels quite comfortable, having some real influence and power in the Nepolitanian court. He also has more opportunities to weave his plots which, hopefully, put him somewhere high one day. Recently, he has been communicating with various nobles from Pommerania, including the highest ranking members of the House of Greif, trying to find out what support can Casmir obtain from them. He also planned to gain more influence in King Louis of Lotharingia’s court, perhaps even become one of his first vassals, sadly, with the rebellion there, these plans are fading away.

Henryk is a rather machiavellistic person, he prefers using people as tools in order to obtain his goals. In doing so, he likes to stay in shadow, playing the power behind the throne rather, manipulate and influence others. He is regarded as a rather cold person by those who know him better, even though he can pretend not to be one; actually he is quite a good actor. He rarely shows any true feelings, few believe that he actually has got any. Without doubt Henryk is cynical and egoistic man. He only seems to have a strong affection toward his sister, Anna, but again, these might as well be rumours and mere assumptions.

Recently, even though many do not realise this, he is becoming the puppeteer or atchitect rather, of House of Greif policy toward Italy and West of Europe (most notably, Burgundy). He regularly sends detailed reports to Stettin, depicting the situation in these realms. House of the Greif almost completely resigned from sending emissaries into these regions, almost totally relying on Henryk.

The question is, how the history will remember this ambiguous person.

A letter arrived from London.

"Esteemed Griffon nobility of Pomerania, Sweden, Hannover, Prussia, et cetera.

I have taken no other wives and have made no attempts at courting a bride since negotiations ended with His Late Imperial Majesty Joachim, and would gladly permit negotiations to restart, or if one would rather more friendly wording, we could 'continue' it as if there had been no interruptions.

We would gladly host quarters for Pomeranian diplomats to confer the wishes of both parties.

The principal issue on the Yorkist side is the discussion of a potential dowery in Germany for any -- god willing -- sons to inherit, which would permit a son to be both a Prince of the Empire and of all of the lands of the house of York, including England and France. Naturally this theoretical offspring would be a steadfast supporter of Casimir should he wish to continue his late father's legacy.

Should this be possible and deemed reasonable, by all means, let the discussions commence.

Narva

crest1inger.gif

Doctor von Zitzewitz looked at young Schwerin and smiled at the boy. Today Ulrich was begging his formal education. Von Zitzewitz decided to start with short introduction to the recent history of Pommern. The boy was looking back at him with childish anticipation.

“The land of Ingermanland with its biggest city and port, Narva, was acquired by the House of Greif in the early 20’s of the XV century though a famous “Right of passage for a City” deal made with a certain Grand Duke of Livonia. Even though the city was not among the biggest ones of in the entire region, its position was vital and thusly Narva has been known as a traditional center of local trade.

The waterway along the Narva River had already been utilized during the time of the Vikings in times that all surrounding lands belonged to pagan tribes. It was an offshoot of the famous river/waterway from the Baltic to the Mediterranean that was referred to in an ancient Russian chronicle as "The Way from Varangians to Greeks". Later the land route from Tallinn to Novgorod, through the lands of Ingermanland, had been intensively used. There, near the river crossing, a trade settlement sprang up in the XII century. Eventually this settlement was granted the status of a town in 1345 by the will of Valdemar VI Atterdag, the King of Denmark. This is how the town of Narva we know today actually came into being.

Our city plays a great role in the trade system of the eastern Baltic and the realms surrounding it. This is largely maintained by the fact that we are the part of Whendische Handels Union and allied with mighty Hansa. We are near very important centers of trade such as Mitau, Riga, Moscow and most importantly the pearl of the east Novogrod. Many valuable goods are being transited through river, city and the port of Narva. Those from numerous Russian principalities really do not have much choice but to deal with us. To tell you the truth we do not put much obstacles to them, even though we could try and bleed them dry, why? Simply, because it isn’t worth the effort. Pskov and Novograd are associated with Whendichers as well, we have unlimited access to Novograd and they have the same to Baltic. They have to use our facilities and ships and pay a nice price for it anyway. Besides, the Pommeranian Dukes and your father know well that it’s better to have an ally than an enemy here. It’s better to keep a balance in between Liths, Russians, Ingers and Germans than to destroy it. Imagine that the swarms of Russians or Liths could easily go through our county before any help could arrive.

And thusly we live here, enjoying peace and stability under the rule of your father and protection of mighty House of Gryphon. House of Schwerin was given the County of Ingermanalnd shortly after its acquisition. Your grandfather Jacob was the first ruler here. You will take this responsibility after your father one day.”

Young Ulrich was now looking through the window, admiring the views, one day, one day it all will be his.

28tradeIngria.jpg

Market in Narva

The city market was bustling with activity. Merchants from all sides of Rus, Lithuania, Scandinavia and Germany were conducting their business here. Even though the city always had a significant German minority, it grown to be a majority during the last three decades. German settlements in the area were also increasing with each passing year, the Greifs and Schwerins supported it and many were interested in this land of opportunities, smaller taxes and challenges. A whole new generation was born under the rulership of Pommeranian Gryphons, only the oldest people remembered their former rulers and even less of them actually cared about it. The region was Germanizing in an amazing pace, the laws were Pommeranian and the rulers were Pommeranian as well. If one wanted to do business here he must have speak German, if one of the natives wanted to achieve success he needed to speak German as well. Many Ingers and Russians were no longer like their brothers in Kexholm, Karelia, Pskov and Novograd. Even the merchants coming from Lithuania and Russia also understood that and used either German or Latin in their daily enterprises. County of Ingermanland became a truly Pommeranian property.

Long awaited return

He felt odd being in Stettin again. He barely recognized the harbour and the city itself, the only place he remembered quite well was the castle where he was born and lived couple of years, when he wasn’t in Nurnberg or some other place the Imperial Court was visiting.

Another thing that he remembered well was his mother even though she couldn’t recognize him. Both of them were truly touched when they reunited after so many years. ”Too many.” said Christine. Casmir had mixed feelings about it, yes, perhaps too many. However, if he didn’t go to Portugal he would never see the marvels of Iberia, the Black coast, the isles, the Mediterranean and most importantly, he would never meet so many fascinating people and friends. During that very meeting with his mother he realized how the paths of one’s life can lead into different places and situations. Italian “humanists” were right, regarding this, and many other issues.

For example it was clear that Germany was totally different than the things he used to, the moment he crossed the borders he started to notice these little differences. These people were just, more,,, more barbaric.

However, Casmir enjoyed his journey immensely, just as he enjoyed it back almost seven years ago. Most importantly he enjoyed the return to his homeland, the homeland he was to inherit and rule after his father, who already was considered for a legend in Pommern. Casmir met these curious looks many times, they were all wondering if the son will be worthy of his father. Casmir was painfully aware of that and yet there was this warm feeling, deep in his guts that was making him happy.

*****

After the first four weeks Casmir managed to traverse Stettin and neighboring lands couple of times. He spent a lot of time in Stattin’s docks and harbour, looking at primitive Blatic ships, which could not match those latest Portuguese designs. He also started to complete the tools for his new workshop.

After the initial period when his mother couldn’t believe that her son came back, Christine started to direct at him remarks concerning “neglecting his duties as the ruler”. And indeed Casmir was neglecting them, he was focusing on little, local affairs not trying or perhaps being reluctant to grasp a larger perspective. “Don’t Worry Christine” said Count von Schonneneberg, old Joachim’s friend “You’ll see, he will eventually grow up into it, he is just too deep into the water right now.”

*****

The first meeting of the Council of Pommernian Dukes was coming fast, and with that more and more news were coming from Pommernian lands, its neighbors and the rest of the Empire. Casmir was finally more inclined to hear them and was spending long hours with his mother and advisors debating about various issues.

A letter arrived from Brandenburg

Onto Casimir of the Greif

Dear nephew,

It is most flattering that we are able to write to each other in such an unformal manner. Hopefully I will be able to know you as well as I knew your father. You are off course allways welcome as a honored guest in Brandenburg.

I had not planned to attend the coronation myself, due to pressing matters concerning the western part of Brandenburg. With the impressive number of prominent people that will attend however, I fully agree with your mother. She is indeed a wise woman. Therefore I have decided to attend anyway, I look forward to meeting you in person there.

May God be with you and your family.

Your uncle,
Johann von Hohenzollern

In February, 1454, a Burgundian courier, badly delayed by the severe winter, finally arrives in Stettin with a letter written by Anna of the Greif.

annfull3.txt

Onto Her Radiant Majesty Christine von Wittelsbach-Greif, Dowager Queen of the Romans, Dowager Queen of Sweden, Dowager Duchess of Pommerania and Stettin, Duchess of Lüneburg, Grubenhagen, Wolfenbuttel, Margravine of Danzig, etc. etc.

Your Majesty,

Albeit we are sure you have already heard rumours of the calamites befallen us, we wish to inform you: our husband, Ludwig von Berri, properly crowned and anointed King of Lotharingia, was killed by a group of rebels and usurpers; our children and us were forced into exile. Despite the blood-money offered for our head, with the help of the few loyal to us, we managed to escape, finding sanctuary in the town of Sainte-Claude, even though three of our children -- Victor, Rafael and Rosa-Anna -- died during our flight.

Since the laws of the Kingdom of Lotharingia do explicitly allow women to inherit, the legal heiress of the Kingdom of Lotharingia is our daughter, Maria von Berri. We shall fight those rebelling against us, we shall avenge our husband’s death, we shall get for Queen Maria what is rightfully hers.

If you ever had any love of your husband, you will come to the aid of his grand-daughter.
