Nice cabinet you have formed, but like stnylan, it appears there are way to many cheifs in that outfit... but time will tell, eh?

The layout, by the by, is just right.

Now, on with the next update, please.

Chapter Three

23 Lawton Terrace, 24nd December, 21:57

The SS* 'Jaguar' Saloon pulled up to the kerb slowly as the mists of night started to close in. George Secker stepped out into the grim night accompanied by his assistant Tom Jenkins, the junior man passed a beige file over they walked up to the entrance as the inspector glanced over the file.

“Archibald 'Archie' Carter, hum... tell me again Jenkins why we're here?” he asked as he passed the file back
“Well sir, he a servant at St James Palace and hasn't been seen for the three days since the explosion” Secker cut him short by knocking on the door, after a few minutes that were spent in fruitless waiting he produced a set of lock picks and let himself in.
“Well, I think we can see that no ones been here for a day or two” Jenkins said dryly tapping a half full pint of, now obviously sour, milk “Ok, lads search the place” following his words five members of special branch entered the house and began searching for evidence.

The search went on for some time but little was found save for the 'usual' trappings of an obviously single man. The place had been left in a hurry if the half drank pint had not shown that the newspaper that had been thrown onto the chair did. The two MI5 agents proceeded up the stairs and into the bedroom, it was quite spartan in appearance, with only a desk, rug and bed.

“Lift that rug up will you tom?” his assistant duly knelt and pulled the rug from it's place in the centre of the room “look sir!” he said, excitement running down his spine “these floorboards have been up recently”
“Yes tom, go get an officer with a hammer or crowbar, or something”
Jenkins sprang up and headed into the next room for assistance. It was the work of only a minute and a crowbar to get the aforementioned board up. It revealed a veritable 'treasure trove' of items. First pulled out was a wad of Sterling the the value of several thousand pounds, then a collection of tickets both train and ferry from London to Dublin, but that was not the start prize, that was given to the coils of detonator wire, small remnants of explosives and various other bomb making equipment.

“Bingo sir! We've don it” Jenkins almost whooped with joy
“Have we Tom?” his superior quizzed him
“Well we have everything here, it's pretty obvious that he was the one who made the bomb and he has obvious links with Ireland, perhaps even the IRA!”
“Yes, but don't you find it a little odd? I mean it's just too dammed neat” the man bent down and picked up a piece of paper that had fallen as the evidence was taken out of the floor, it read, Warehouse 7, London wharf.
“I expect that we shall find even more evidence of the 'Irish conspiracy' there two, come on Jenkins lets go before the trail cools any more."

It was as if Secker had foretold the future, when they arrived at the warehouse it was filled to the brim with Irish Tricolours, bomb making equipment and a string of documents that named numerous people. The names were, on closer inspection, also found to be prominent members of the Irish Republican Army, that had split with the 'government' forces over the treaty that had left Ulster in British hands. Perhaps of more concern there was also the names of one or two junior ministers in the Irish government. The MI5 agent was not happy about the results, and he made a point of saying so to his superior Sir James in there meeting.

“Don't be so stupid George” he had said “you have solved the case and so quickly too, that will be a feather in your cap I can tell you. This will be presented to cabinet in the morning, of course we better let the foreign office and PM know straight away.”

10 Downing Street, Christmas Day, 10:00

The cabinet was not happy they had been dragged away from their family's on the worst day of all, the one day a year they thought would never involve politics. They were aware of the importance, however, they would never have been disturbed if it had not been so. It did not come as too much of a shock then, when Sir William delivered the news.

“Yesterday night I was called out of the blue by MI5, they have successfully identified the plotters that detonated the bomb on the 21st.” Sir William paused to take a sip of water, it had been a long night after all. “It seems that a man by the name of Archie Carter was the ring leader for a group of Irish republicans who were seeking to kill the King and his ministers” he surveyed the room and saw the collection of amazed faces, he pushed on “It also seems that the Irish government may be involved so they may not be willing to give up the plotters who have fled back to Dublin, also as you all will know there have been suspected links between the IRA and the Soviet Union, investigations are still proceeding. What I need now gentlemen, are options, Austen?”
“Well sir, myself and the foreign office have been over our options and had discussions with the relevant bodies, the joint chief of staff advise that they can have a full naval blockade of Ireland in a matter of hours, that air forces can start to operations over Ulster in an hour or so and the army can be ready to go into operations in a few days” the Lord President was cult off abruptly
“You can't be serious, were not really talking about war with Ireland are we?” Samuel Hoare blurted out, expressing what many others were thinking. At this point Eden couched for attention and waded into the conversation.
“No, it is of course no what we want, but we must be prepared Samuel he purred, I have drawn up a ultimatum to be delivered to them. Our officials in Dublin are confident that the Irish will not hand over the men otherwise, as that may cause the men to implicate themselves, however, we are confident that they will soon fold to this.” Eden paused as he handed out a draft ultimatum;

1. To suppress any publication which incites to hatred and contempt of the British Empire;
2. To remove from the military service and the administration in general all officers guilty of propaganda against the British Empire, names of which were to be provided by the British government;
3. To accept the collaboration in Ireland of organs of the British government in the suppression of the subversive movement directed against the territorial integrity of the empire;
4. To take judicial proceedings against the accessories to the plot of December 21st who are on Irish territory, with the help and direction of organs delegated by the British government;
5. To immediately arrest four named persons implicated by the preliminary investigation undertaken by the British Empire;
6. To furnish the British Empire with explanations regarding statements from high Irish officials both in Ireland and abroad, who have expressed hostility towards the British Empire; and
7.To notify the British Empire without delay of the execution of these measures.

The cabinet, with a heavy heart passed the 'Christmas Day Ultimatum' as an extraordinary measure to the King for royal assent with an expiry date of the 1st January 1937. It was duly assented to and delivered to a shocked Irish embassy on the same day. It was not a surprise when the Irish government sent a response on the 29th accepting all but clause four, which they argued was an affront to their sovereignty. The response was leaked to the papers which said with great glee that the 'murder of our Prime Minister was just such an affront to our sovereignty'.

* Shortly after the war in our time line, the company known as SS Cars (Swallow Sidecar) would, for obvious reasons, change their name to Jaguar

Mmm, funny coincidence that...

I am not sure that the Austro-Hungrian ultimatum to Serbia is precisely the most auspicious example of what to do however ;)

Well, well, well...the Irish have much to worry about, all things considered. A tough position but one that must be taken, it would seem.

Looking really nice. :)

Draco Rexus: Hum... a cabinet split you think? You may very well think that... but I couldn't posibily say ;)

Oh and on at me to update eh!?!? :mad: just as well as you have already updated K&C otherwise :mad: :D ;)

stnylan: Ah coincidence... or an evil plot? :D Only time will tell..

And you are correct, however, it may not be the most auspicious thing to do.... but it was chosen for a reason... :D

coz1: The Irish have much to worry about, but then so do the British... it was not so long ago that the Irish won their 'freedom' (Home Rule) and things can get 'messy' in Ireland (please see histroy from... well... 1066 through 2006 I would say).. one that must be taken? well as Bernard from Yes Minister says; Theres lots of things you can do, lots of things you should and lots of things people will want you to do... but not that much you actually have to do... Ah! British polotics at it's best :D ;)

Sir Humphrey: Thank you kindly sir... I just hope that you do not mind me using a war inIreland like Sacred :)

I'm hardly the first nor the last to do so. :) lol

Nice update Sir Clive. Good to see the MI5 is working quickly and have identified the Irish. Can’t say I am surprise that the Irish didn’t accept the ultimatum, but then again that was perhaps what His Majesty’s government wanted. It will be good for the Imperial forces to show those Irish who rules in the British islands…

Ah, but who planted the evidence to make it look like the Irish were responsible?

Vann

ALL: I'm afraid that my internet connection at home is faulty (AGAIN!! :mad: ) so I can't post the updates that I have written, when i get it back (hopefuly tonight) I will post them is quick succession... I appologise for the delay. :)

Sir Humphrey: That you sir... I hope you can catch the story as it unfolds. :)

therev: Yes.. but the truth tends to be shades of grey and not black & white. ;)

Lord E: Imperial forces will show who rules the British Isles... but it;s not neccesarily them ;)

Vann the Red: Who indeed... maybe no one, perhaps it was the IRA but the person/people who funded them didn't want anyone to find out and so 'changed' the evidence? :D

Competition: While your waiting... can anyone guess who 'Geroge Secker' is and how I chose his name (if it's too obvious) :D

A Cromwell invading Ireland? It'll all go horribly, horribly wrong, mark my words. ;)

Hmmmm, interesting.

Well then, that was a nicely wrapped up investigation, wasn't it? I wonder if our true conspirators will end up finding that they are going to need to find a way to put George Secker on ice. A good investigator, which makes up the majority of Scotland Yard's Special Branch and MI-5, is going to find all that "evidence" a bit to... convenient.

I wonder if this will all come about before or after the Irish and Brits start a useless blood letting?

Nice work, Sir Clive, very nice work. Since you have posted recently, I guess K&C will need it as well, eh? ;)

Chapter Four

French Embassy, London, 27nd December, 10:07

Why do they always keep me waiting exactly seven minutes, it must be to get a feeling of 'superiority' over me, these were the thoughts of Sir George Clerk as he entered the office of the French ambassador Monsieur Cobin. The French would ask some difficult questions in private, this was to be expected, they would almost certainly declare strict neutrality, Clerk was here to take the private French wrath with good grace. They would stamp and shout in their pompous manner, but the would relent, of this the entire foreign office was sure.

“Ah Monsieur Cobin, Bonjour” the stiff but eloquent language of the skilled diplomat
“Please Sir George can we continue in English” Clerk notice how tired the man looked as he spat out the words, this was not the auspicious start he had anticipated from his friend “Let us get straight to the matter at hand, this ultimatum of yours has not gone down at all well with the people of France or Leon Blum himself, I'm afraid that this will have very serious consequences for our relationship” the Englishman was getting rather nervous now, this was not what he expected Cobin almost sounded as if it was not just going to be hysterics.
“Yes but you can understand that we have done only what is necessary?”
“No, we do not see that as the position, and more importantly the people do not either. It is with great sadness that we shall have to withdraw the 'understanding' that has been present between out countries.” no word was spoken, the elderly Sir George was just dumbfounded.
“You are going to break off the 'Entente cordial' over a minor matter such as this?”
“Blum believes that you are a likely to drag us into a war sooner or later and that our policy should be a continental one and not to be involved with the internal squabbles of your own empire.” the English diplomat was hushed into silence as the man continued. “You should understand that we still want cordial relations, as such we shall officially declare neutrality, after a period we will announce to the world that our 'relationship' is over. We will immediately begin moving our naval forces to the Channel and seeking agreements with Belgium and the Netherlands.”

With that the meeting promptly broke, save the last vestiges of ceremony and tradition. Sir George was amazed at the French reaction, they had never been close to the Irish, not like the US with its traditional links to the 'Emerald Isle'. Things would be explained at the turn of the year when a 'million man' march descended upon the French Capital angered at the fact that Blum had not condemned the British action with more fervour, this is when the Entente cordial died as the French Prime Minister announced just days into the new year that the alliance was broken. The Americans would go further than the French by openly condemning what it saw as a 'flagrant attack by an Imperial monster upon the shores of a noble country' as President Alf Landon declared. The opinions of the rest of the world were mixed, but opinion at home was clear, they largely supported the war after the atrocities committed by the IRA, there was some disquiet however, especially in the socialist quarters of Great Britain.

German Foreign Ministry, Berlin, 29th December 09:30

Sir Neville Meyrick Henderson had been unsurprised to be called upon by the German government in Berlin, he was prepared for the general pleasantries that would prelude the berating of another nation toward his homeland. Diplomats such as his had been called by many a foreign dignitary to a polite but purposeful rebuke. He sat in the anteroom waiting for the call from von Neurath the German foreign minster, he saw a youngish official come his way, he led the British diplomat to an impressive office. Von Neurath was not known as a jovial character, so it was a surprise when Sir Neville entered the room that he wore a broad smile.

“Ah Sir Neville, how good of you to join us, please take a seat” the ex-officer looked kindly upon the weathered Englishman as his servants produced drinks “It is good to see you, I think I should begin by reading you part of the speech that Fuhrer Hitler shall be giving to the German people tonight;"

“People of Germany it is time that we put the enmity between us and our brothers in Britain aside as we seek the friendship and cooperation of that great nation, it's great people and its vast Empire! We will stand with our friends against the warlike French who seek to undermine the Anglo-Saxon bond between German and Englishmen”

Henderson sat bemused, his head stirring with thoughts of what this little snippet of speech, only a few seconds in all, would mean to the future of the respective countries. The clouds of dissent were lifted from his mind as the the German lord stood beaming at him.

“What exactly does this mean then Herr von Neurath?” he quizzed the man as his head spun with the likely ramifications of the move by Germany's leader.
“It means what it says, we are looking for cooperation with you. We know of the French moves that threaten both of our glorious navy's and countries. Herr Hitler is determined that the mistakes of nineteen-fourteen eighteen are not repeated.” the man spoke in a soft voice with the pleasantness of honey, it seemed to Sir Neville that anything may be possible. It was true that many in the cabinet did not look upon Germany and its government kindly, but the Empire needed all the friends it could acquire in light of French and American actions. “We can not go into anything formal as of yet, and I believe that many in your government would also look unkindly upon the idea.” Henderson smiled as he thought of the look upon Churchill's face if they entered any form of 'cooperation', it was amusing but also worrying for the government, von Neutath continued “but we would like to discuss further the possibilities of Anglo-German cooperation”
“That is a very positive assessment of the situation, and one that my government will, no doubt, welcome. The specifics are for a later date, but you can be assured that no one wants to re-live the Great War.”

The last major player to 'declare' was Italy, which deeply condemned the actions of the British government in a further ratcheting of tensions between the two countries. Mussolini had not forgotten nor forgiven the strong condemnations of the British during the Abyssinian war. The lines were beginning to be drawn in international circles, the Americans , Italians and Soviets had worsening relations with the Empire with the French and the 'European minors' moving away from Britain but staying neutral. The Germans and Japanese were, however, growing toward the aims of Britain, thus the country that prided itself upon protection smaller nations against aggressors, such as Belgium against Germany in 1914, was falling into the opposite camp.

There was many an argument as the ultimatum ran out in the new year within cabinet, the 'ministry of all the talents' was rapidly splitting and Sir William knew that he would need a strong, effective and above all quick war to foster the national dynamic to support his fledgling administration. He would receive bad news upon the very first day of the Anglo-Irish war, as it was dubbed by the press, and he would discover that the woes on the battlefield were noting in comparison to those upon Parliament.

Vincent Julien: Ah VJ so nice to have you along... Cromwell in Ireland... I really don't know what your getting at! ;) :D

Arilou: Thank you sir, it is an honour of you to join us, I hope you will enjoy.

Draco Rexus: Hum.. yes Secker is a good man and it may well come to light.. but when ;) thank you for your comments as ever... now go and update K&C darn it!! :mad: :D ;)
