Part I

Dream Eagles - 'Vision'

It was a typical cold night on the shores of the Lake they (later) will call Ontario. The Iroquois brave named Sleep Eagle, named by his mother for his tenacity during the games of lacrosse and long winter naps. This was not a good time for Sleep Eagle for he had come under a sickness of 'body fire'. This fever has had him under a spell for 2 suns and stars and all of his extended family in their longhouse are concerned for his survival.

On the third rising of the sun his fever broke and Sleep Eagle rose to his feet with a concern in his eyes that all could see. He immediately sent for the longhouse council heads and asked to have an emergency meeting. The concern in these young braves eyes caused the council to gather that evening.

The mumbling of the elders echoed off the longhouse walls as they tried to understand why this meeting was held. Sleep Eagle stood to address the council and slowly the rumbling of the great lake could once again be heard in the background. My dear elders I am Sleep Eagle of the Iroquois tribe of the land of Onondaga. My longhouse resides 4 suns and stars to the east of the great fall of water on the shores of Ontario. Four suns and stars ago I fell to the 'body fire' sickness. Within this sickness I have had a grave vision over and over. We have all been taught from childhood that the land under our feet sits upon a great turtles back. In this vision I am standing on the great turtles back and from on the far side of the shell a grand canoe with billowing cloth pushing it floats towards me.

As I stand on the shores of the fabled greater lake a strange people with black stone as clothing disembark from this grand canoe. As I approach them to greet them they ignore me as I if I did not exist. They push me aside and begin digging all around me muttering the word 'Gold'. One of them snatches my beaded necklace given to me by my grandfather from my neck and studies it for mere seconds and tosses it aside. As I pick it up from the ground and replace it around my neck I begin having 'body fire' sickness like I a have never experienced before. The world turns white and I begin the vision over again.

The mumbling within the longhouse rises above the sound of the waves again as Sleep Eagle sits down. Only after minutes of individual arguments do one of the elders raise his voice above the others and address Sleep Eagle. I am 'Bear Paw' of the land of Mohawk visiting your tribe as we hunt along the river Genesee. I wish to ask you if you could possibly describe what land you were at in this vision. Sleep Eagle rises again and addresses the council. I believe I was standing on the shores of the fabled 'Greatest
Water' for I could see forever out towards the sea and the air tasted of salt. The Elder council grumbles a laugh and tells Sleeping Eagle that this 'fabled' Greatest Water surely existed for he has been there himself and tasted of this salted water. There is a place called Manhantentee were many peaceful tribes exist and I believe this is where the vision has taken place. As 'Bear Paw' finished his statement the individual rumbling rose to a load roar. Some argued that this was a foolish young braves vision and nothing less but many saw the concern in Sleep Eagles eyes and those of the council heads also knew that this was a special young man. For they knew that someday he would likely be head of the great council in Mohawk.

Finally 'Bear Paw” broke up the individual arguments and looked directly at Sleep Eagle and asked him what do you believe we should do about your vision? Sleep Eagle rose from his sitting position again and spoke not at the elders but to all that were present in the Council Longhouse. I state this with no hesitation within my body. Our future I believe is at a dangerous crossroads. We have flourished in the land of the Great Lakes and its smaller lakes of fingers but we must prosper beyond this. For when we meet this man of black stone clothing we must be prepared for what ever awaits us. Many within the longhouse fell under this spell of concern and before long many were demanding something to be done. A young but wise minor council member by the name of 'Silver Fox' broke into the conversation and volunteered to go onto the great water Ontario and visit friend and foe to try to bring them into the great Iroquois nation. I shall travel on the waters of Erie, Huron, Michigan and Gitchagoume and try to bring all that will join us. A visiting member of the land of Oswego suggested building welcoming longhouses at the “Fall of Great Water” in the land of Niagara to bring together the new colonists to be organized. Planning took the meeting well into the night.

As the meeting came to an end “Bear Paw” again addressed “Sleeping Eagle”. As for you my young friend who we shall now call “Dream Eagle” you have a meeting with destiny. The Mohawk tribe will send you 10,000 strong braves to join you. You will begin your travel towards the Greatest Water. When you reach the land of Manhantentee convince the local tribes to help us in our quest and we will begin to send strong Iroquois families to join you. This will help us build a stronger nation for this coming storm.

Later that night “Dream Eagle” was at his favorite spot at the shore of the great water Ontario. He would go to this spot when he was a small boy to throw rocks at the water to see if he could get them to skip across the water. He picked up one of these rocks and threw it into the calm water. It did not skip like it should have but plunged directly down but it did create ripples in all directions.

The story continues……………………

Author Note:

Grand Campaign playing Iroquois Nation
Normal Difficulty
Added a Shipyard in Onondaga (to simulate +1 colony)
Gave myself a Conquistador leader named “Dream Eagle”
Gave myself some extra gold for colonizing (I only will use it for this and American Indians did not need all the pampering that Europeans did they were semi-nomadic)
Got Very lucky in the 2nd year and received a random Conquistador leader I named him “Silver Fox”

PS – I grew up on Lake Ontario and skipped many rocks and sailed through-out that wonderful Lake

Dream Eagle’s Vision Part II

The Journey to Manhantentee was a long and costly journey for Dream Eagle. Many a brave warrior had fallen on the road either to exhaustion or raids from hostile tribes. On one occasion he was eye to eye with a chief from a tribe from the land called Connecticut. These people seemed overly aggressive to Dream Eagle but he insisted on trying to bring them into the fold of Iroquois Nations. As he was speaking to this chief and it seemed like he was getting somewhere a shriek rang out and one of his warriors fell to the ground in front of him with a gash along the side of his head. This caused a general melee to commence and Dream Eagle was grabbed by the closest enemy, the chief he was just speaking with. Dream Eagle's instinct kicked in and they tumbled to the ground in a death struggle. Everything seemed to be in slow motion when suddenly he felt the warmth of liquid run down his arm and the struggle was over. He had cut this man’s throat and never even remembered doing it. He had taken life before but never at such a close personal level.

With their chief dead the remaining warriors fled into the forests and Dream Eagle stopped all those wanting to give chase. This is not our destiny our destiny lies to the south. The thought of all the aggressive tribes tore at Dream Eagle for he wondered how he would be able to unite these people. He just hoped that “Bear Paw” was correct and the people of Manhantentee were friendly.

That was many moons ago and so far “Bear Claw” was right. The people of Manahanatee were very friendly and a main village had begun to sprout from the forest. Many Iroquois, Huron, Oneida and other tribes across the land began to send families to Manhanantee. Dream Eagle met a strong lovely squaw from the Huron tribe and they began a family together.

Word from the Tribal Council was usually positive and three other provinces have been brought into the Iroquois nation, Connecticut, Niagara and Keubec. Everything seemed to be going well but there was also many questions not answered. Talk of his vision had faded to the point where it was non-existent. The unification of the tribes was so successful most of the leaders forgot about why they were doing it. They just went ahead because of the wealth it brought to the nation.

One afternoon Dream Eagle needed some time to think so he took his son down to the shore to skip some rocks on the Greatest of Water. The salty taste from the water spray hung in Dream Eagles mouth and also his mind. His son was an adventurous young boy named “Sea Eagle” for his love of the water and wind. He ran ahead to start skipping stones. As Dream Eagle walked up the where his son was skipping stones his son told him “see father you must skip on top of the waves for if you do not it will run into a huge wall of water and fail to do anything”. As Dream Eagle agreed with his sons habit of telling him what should be done a shiny glare caught Dream Eagles eye. Out upon the horizon a shiny speck was floating. This surely was not a canoe from the village for the size alone was much too large. He stared at it for what seemed hours not knowing what do until it disappeared around the cape. It looked at his son and told him to go to the village and stay there.

Dream Eagle ran along the shoreline and after 2 hours he came to the other side of the cape where the shore was sandy and rocks were few. As he broke through the scrub to the shoreline he stopped in mid stride. Within a stones throw away stood fifty or more men with shiny stone clothing and colorful streaming flags. Dream Eagle had froze where he stood and stared with wonder at these visitors. Two things he noticed most about these strange people was the large hair growth around their faces and a disgusting smell, for he was down wind from them. He also noticed he was not alone for all around him people of the village had come and were hiding in the scrub watching these strange people.

After watching these strangers Dream Eagle decided to complete his vision. He stood up and took a step towards the shoreline into the opening………..

Game overview-

- Started building 4 provinces
- Building troops etc….
- Building ships at Manhattan

Problems
- no increase tech levels
- no building construction
- no diplomacy choices (not even if you know the others capital I tried this) it must be hard coded

Solutions

- I hacked file to give me a Governor building at Mohawk representing the tribal council
- I have a war code hack if I want to declare war (wrote code in save game to make war with England this is a real pain because you can't attack provinces unless you declare war) - so no raids on their trade post unless you are brave enough to write in a war hack.

Conclusion unless you seriously want to change game parameters playing a Native American nation is a pain in the ars!
