Downloading mods and performance of the game

Does it change the performance of the game when I download the mod I'm using instead of subscribing it? Does if improve the performance?
How do subscribe mods work since they aren't downloaded(?)?

Subscribing to a mod is still downloading it, it just removes the hassle of putting the folder in the right place etc.

There is no functional difference between them once in game
