If you use double quotes when naming a unit, the savegame file can get corrupted. I experienced my (best) army disappear after naming it 8th Army "Desert Rats" and later reloading the game.
When consulting the .EUG file i discovered that the unit had been saved with [name = "8th Army "], [location = 0] and other odd things. I think you can see what the problem is, Paradox
