Sorry to rain on your parade but you used the wrong "funny Frenchy looking e-thingy". You used an grave, and it should be an acute, which goes the other way. Touché.

My battles in Zhubrovychi are not one-sided: the Soviets attack and we retreat. What could be more even?

"DOH!" ... "Curses, foiled again!" ... and other similar clichés ... wait ... did I just get the thingy right this time?? By gum I think I did! And just when I thought my years as a developer had thoroughly and permanently dulled my grammatical sense.

Doppelgänger: the Untold Story of the Third Reich

Sometime during the night of Saturday 12th October, the Soviet armour quietly pulled out of Rahachow. Von Kleist had demonstrated that infantry, with some panzer support, could defeat massed enemy tanks. Let us see if Kreysing’s infantry, lacking any support, can do the same in Romanesti, where before dawn on Sunday 56,000 mountain, regular and SS troops attacked 10th Tankovaya Diviziya.

Once again a week started well, with the Luftwaffe getting seven formations flying (It ended the day with 17 missions and about 2,600 enemy killed). Kuntzen took Krassny after heavy fighting, but and von Bock was disappointed to see the Soviet infantry pull back from Niezwiez. Three consecutive wins for General Hoth’s panzerarmee. To the north, Paulus may have been disappointed with the result from Demjasnk, but what else could he expect? Recapturing the city, lost through criminal negligence, will take more than one attacking infantry division. In the far south, the NKVD broke and ran from Melitopol before serious damage could be done to them.

Another fairly hopeless attack was mounted on Smolensk, but Weiss insists this is a serious attempt to take the city. To me it appears far more like a reconnaissance in force, designed to identify enemy strongpoints and tire the defenders. If Weiss persists and pushes deep into the suburbs, it could get nasty. In the meantime, it was General von Manstein’s turn to celebrate, as von Speck showed he could both defend his own base and keep up pressure on Nardoychi. The last of the Russian attackers staggered out of Malyn, leaving more than 25% of their comrades behind in the mud. A probe into the marshes of Baranowicze was just as costly, but still the Red Army persisted, sending 65th “Tyumen” Rifle Division to again take on von Bock in Nieswiez.

20-1Assault_zpsa38526a9.jpg

A constant danger in city fighting: counter-attacks by Soviet assault teams

At 4PM General von Speck was able to report his second victory for the day: Narodychi was a close run thing but a victory nonetheless. Not only a tremendous effort to run a defensive and attacking battle simultaneously, but a great step in shutting off the Pripyat. Forcing the Soviets to use supply lines thought the swamps will be of great assistance, so every clear ground province is priceless.

Von Falkenhorst, short of not only panzers but also regular infantry, has been forced to use his marines, gebirgsjägers and Italian Alpini against another Soviet tank division, this time to retake Ovidiopol. Schlemmer has a four to one advantage, so he could pull it off, but the record of light infantry against armour is not good. As an example, in Hlusk 2.PzD cut the mass of Soviet irregulars to pieces while losing less than 500 men.

To the north of Leningrad, in Sestroresk, the last of 26.ID “Dom” had landed. General Vlasov, after ensuring that General Student was confident that 7th Flieger could hold off any Soviet attack from the north, took his men south to join the siege of Leningrad which is looking very promising. The troopships that delivered his men returned at full speed to Tallinn where 22nd Luftlande was loaded.

The day ended in the same spot as it had begun: Rahachow. General Faklenklo is using two armour divisions to try to drive out von Kleist, who has only his own infantry available. It will interesting to see if von Kleist can show the same ability to handle enemy armour in defence as he did in attack.

An impressive start (8,000 to 22,000 casualties), but after last week I place little reliance on a day’s performance.

Road and rail construction and repair were completed in Tuchyn, Gaivoron and Uman, but no funds were available for more infrastructure work, at least not at the moment. Demands for replacement equipment, as well as upgrades, are just too high. Not to mention the need for additional support brigades for existing units that are suffering badly against enemy tanks.

Weiss did order his men out of Smolensk some time after midnight, but I would argue he left it too long. Nearly 3,000 men did not make it out, and enemy losses were tiny. Let the Luftwaffe hit the city while we surround it: that is the way to save lives. The only other major event during the night was Bohnstedt’s attack on Akciabrski. He has prepared well, the Tigers of 1st schwere Panzer division plus the medium tanks of 2.PzD to stiffen 20.ID (mot). Vinogradov’s three armour divisions, already showing signs of wear and tear, have little or no chance. Their best option is to flee now.

21-1tiger_zps3c4cb29d.jpg

A Tiger is unusual enough to attract attention from the troops who will fight alongside it: unfortunately they will remain rare.

We managed three victories in Russia on Monday, but two of them were not the sort we would like to see repeated. Veiel’s staunch defence of Nelidovo was an example to others of the courage needed to defeat the Red Army, but 7,500 of our soldiers perished. At least the Russians suffered more. In Vesele, where Tittel triumphed over the Soviet armour, despite everyone’s concern’s at the ability of his men to defeat tanks, our losses were comparable, but the Russians were barely hurt. Only Romanesti was a reasonable success, and that was partly due to the Romanians shouldering half the casualties.

For once the poor result in Russia was matched by our losses in a defeat in France. The doomed yet still determined Vichy garrison of Toulouse fought like demons against a combined German-Italian assault on the city, and the Axis force was driven back in a humiliating manner. Taking this critical province must wait for another day.

The end of those battles gave both sides something to consider and only Hlobyne saw fresh combat, with Wetzel clashing with Kurasov. Both forces are made up of armour and infantry, and both are roughly 40,000 strong. Our commanders often boast that man for man and vehicle for vehicle we are more than a match for the Red Army: this is a chance to prove it.

22-114Hlobyne_zps58b4a348.jpg

Hlobyne: an equal contest for once, and one we will win

Infrastructure in Wlodzimierz Wolynski was upgraded, and the factories that have been busy producing road and rail construction equipment and materials have been given new orders. These are for artillery, flak and anti-tank equipment, enough to furnish twelve regiments. It will be some months before these are ready, but when they arrive an infantry brigade will be withdrawn from each of our fortress divisions. This will allow the formation of four new combat divisions at a low cost in manpower.

There had been no battles ended overnight, but the Red Army used the time to launch two powerful attacks, both of which were successfully completed by noon. Our only attack was defeated at about the same time. While characterised as “probes”, we lost two provinces (Ochakiv and Peno) and 3,500 men in these small actions. Only one battle that began before daylight was large enough to continue: Lüter’s drive on Kresttsy, a province in which we have previously lost a large number of men.

The day was not quiet, but neither was there frantic action. Four battles ended, four began. Luftwaffe activity dropped sharply, and we did suffer a major defeat in Mitino, but I was not too unhappy. Other than the disastrous result General Karl’s attack on Korovin, results were good, with a close win in Boryspil and clear victories in Nieswiez and Hlobyne. (The latter a demonstration that the general opinion is correct: we are more than a match for the Soviets when we clash on equal terms). The Soviet attacks in Borodjanka and Romanesti are small and hold little threat of success, while the larger force attacking Nelidovo is up against 1.PzD and 76.ID. I am not too happy at our incursion into Lelchysty, but Knittel has taken three regular divisions into the swamps and hopes weight of numbers will be enough.

Stavka must have been impressed with the success of its tactics the previous night: attacks by overwhelming forces in the dark. The same method was used before dawn on Tuesday, with mixed results. Student easily held Sestroresk, but von Senger und Etterlin’s 36.ID was badly beaten in Melitopol, retreating in panic.

23-1falls_zps3c9bd55e.jpg

Another attack in Sestroresk beaten off, men of 7th Flieger can relax

Luftwaffe missions dropped to just five for the whole day, but luckily the Heer stepped up its performance, not in quantity of attacks but in efficiency of its ongoing battles. Vinogradov elected to stand and fight Bohnstedt’s well-balanced force, and it cost him dearly as he lost 3,500 men and his province of Akciabrski. And von Kleist showed again that his infantry could defeat Feklenko’s tanks, destroying 20% of the attacking force.

Toulouse was again the target in France. Feurstein has put together an impressive assault group: five Italian divisions plus 46.ID. There is also a Yugoslav division that appears to be under Italian control. Obviously our allies are getting on better than we knew. The Toulouse garrison, led by General de Boisseau de Ligne, comprises 18 combat divisions and 19 headquarters, but only totals 65,859 men. It is clear that the defenders have suffered dreadfully in the weeks and months of fighting that has seen them retreat across most of France, but nobody thinks they will surrender easily.

24-1toulouse_zps566ffd3d.jpg

Vichy fires pins down our soldiers: Toulouse will be difficult to capture

Also likely to be hard and costly are the three battles begun in Russia. Why von Hubicki wants to attack six divisions, three of them armoured, in Kozelshchyna is beyond me. Von Schobert’s assault on Demjansk is easier to understand, but I would have preferred him to use more than just 50.ID. The final attack of the day was a Soviet attempt to retake Hlobyne. Wetzel has only been able to get his own 12.ID into place and Petrovskiy has three formations, one armoured, engaged, so this is a battle we will need to watch.

A promising sign towards the end of the day was a probe into Karma. This province is just north of Homel, the key to the Pripyat bulge. Although the men were called back at the first indication of resistance, hopefully it means that Hoth has plans for a full scale attack.

More road works were completed on Thursday but all industrial capacity was transferred to weapon production: our losses have created a huge backlog for replacements. We must keep every unit in peak condition as we cannot afford the luxury of having dozens of divisions in the rear waiting their turn for equipment and men. As it is, we have been forced to send Streccius’ XI Armeekorps to Suwalki to protect against a breakout from the Pripyat. It sounds impressive, but XI Armeekorps is in fact just Kempf’s 19.ID. Dollman will get better use from the newly attached VI Armeekorps (Wodrig) with its three infantry divisions, though they lack support units.

Paulus now has revised objectives for his Armee. He is now authorised to begin the assault of Leningrad, but has been instructed to ensure that Sestroresk is supported. It should not be long before a major attack is launched on the city.

25-1LeningradFeldzugImOsten110_zps4a4283cf.jpg

Leningrad: soon our aircraft and soldiers will focus attention on the city

After all, it was not long for List to seek revenge for the humiliation of Mitino. Early on 17th Weisenburger was on the move, reaching the province just after the arrival of 43rd and 90th Rifle Divisions. On the face of it a tough fight, but 6.ID is fresher than its opponents and we may be able to win the battle before Korovin can call for help. Smolensk is again under attack, this time by 44th Reichsgrenadier Division. The defences are as strong as before, but the defenders themselves are weakening. Our other early attack is less exciting, as Nähring risks the bogs of Dobryn against huge odds. His opponents are not weaker, but may in fact be stronger, now nearly 60,000 men.

The Red Army, showing persistence if not wisdom, mounted a third attack in von Kleist in Rahachow. They would get a surprise, as 14.PzD had joined him. General Zhukov will find his armour/cavalry assault lacks the punch it needs to win this battle.

As the day progressed, the Luftwaffe slowly increased the number of aircraft it could deploy, reaching a total of 9 luftkorps by nightfall. Only about 15 missions were flown though, so plenty of room for improvement. On the ground we were far more active. Von Pfeffer-Wildenbruch, having rallied his Slovakian SS, was back fighting for Ochakiv, while Peno was once more the site of a significant battle as Fischer used IRGD, the Finnish 3rd Divisioona and the recently reinforced Panzerabteilung (zbV) 40 to dispute ownership with Filatov’s two mechanised brigades and Guards motorised division. Further north the Finn’s were also in action, Wilkama commanding the attack on Nova Ladoga. (We don’t have much hope of victory, but it ties up troops who could be more dangerous elsewhere.) To top it off, Keppler began the siege of Leningrad in earnest. 90,000 men have been committed, and it looks very promising so far.

26-1blokada05_zps8f506e67.jpg

Signs have gone up in Leningrad, warning of our attack: “Danger citizens, this side of the street is especially dangerous during bombing”

Unfortunately the promises of success did not carry over onto the battles that were being finalised. Kresttsy, despite the Luftwaffe’s assistance, was another severe defeat, Lüters unable to make a dent in the defence. Hlobyne was a smaller defeat, but just as depressing in the loss ratio and the fact that Wetzel was not able to hold onto his recently acquired territory. Voznesenske was a win for de Angelis, but the Dniepr cost him a lot of men. Berezan was a victory in that we captured the province, but in every other aspect it was a disaster. Von Obstfelder may take pride in his achievement, but another win like that will see him posted to guard duty in Kirkenes. It was left to Lucht in France to deliver a win in which we lost fewer men than the enemy.

Two battles to end the day, both Soviet instigated. The Hungarian General Bargha commands the German/Italian/Hungarian garrison of Tighina, and he has indicated he sees no way of resisting Belous’ 90,000 attackers. Many of our men are dead on their feet and ammunition is low. Defeat is certain, it is just the magnitude which is in question. In Dukovshchina, however, General Leeb is just as sure that 10.ID (mot) can hold off the Soviet armour and mechanised troops.

Late news from Tokyo: another huge loss in Mae Hong Son. What is going on in the east? Why are the Japanese not using their own army to support the fragile and apparently weak units of the China-Nanjing government?

Friday 18th September – during the night General von Kleist won Rahachow for the third time in less than a week. Surely the Russians will give up now? Luftwaffe operations appear back to normal – about 16 missions involving six units. Could the Heer atone for the more than 20,000 men lost in Thursday?

If staying in place and defending territory was atonement then that may be way the Heer sees to rehabilitate its reputation. Not one battle was started by German troops. Perhaps the Red Army was also finding itself overstretched, as its only attack was in Krasnyy, and that was hardly a threat to Weiss’ control of the province. As it began at 2AM, it may have begun before an order to reduce the level of combat was issued.

With no new battles, the three battles decided did slow the tempo significantly. The results of these battles were confusing: our one defeat was, in terms of casualties suffered and inflicted, the best for the Heer. Romanesti, defended by a hodge-podge of Germans and Italians, was held, but at a price, as was Borodjanka. It was only in Chornobai, which Auer finally abandoned, that the Red Army paid heavily.

Otherwise, the only news was from the Department of Foreign Affairs. Romania granted us transit rights, not that we needed them. (And if we needed them, we would have taken them). More significant and bewildering, our embassy in Tokyo reported a huge victory parade. What confused most of us in Berlin, is that we are unaware of any conflict involving large numbers of Japanese troops. We assume the victory was against the British, but where?

27-1SEAsia_zps075b81df.jpg

Was the Japanese victory on the border with Malaya?

Nobody worried too much about events on the far side of the world, as an evaluation of the last six days in Russia revealed a turn-around. The Heer had sharply reduced its losses while lifting those it inflicted to near parity. When taken in conjunction with the Luftwaffe’s efforts, for the first time in weeks we have lost fewer men than the Red Army. Nothing to get too excited about, but something to spark hope of a reversal of our fortunes.

Vicious fighting in the suburbs, but Kempf is doing better than his predecessor. But why are the Italians just watching? We have asked them to assist.

Saltdal (Hills): -1.0 degrees
Brenner (Shock): SS Totenkopf detachments
Eriksen (Elastic defence): 1st Infanteridivisjon

Against regular Norwegian troops, the SS irregulars are making slow progress (31/8)
Slow progress continues (6/9)
Brenner insists he is winning, he just cannot convince the enemy of this (12/9)
Still the fighting continues and though it is low intensity, I worry that casualties are building up.

Barbarossa at midnight 18th September 1942: ongoing battles

Leningrad Armee (Paulus)
Objectives: Petrodvorets, Tosno, Schisselburg, Osinovets, Leningrad, Sestroresk

32-1Lenin_zps68ffed5b.jpg

Victories: Nil
Defeats:Demjansk

Mitino (Plains): 4.2 degrees
Roettig (Assault): 75.ID
Korovin (Defend): 43rd, 90th Rifle Division, 22nd Tankovaya Diviziya

Although the two rifle divisions are at the point of collapse, the armour unit is likely to thwart Roettig’s ambitions.

Leningrad (Urban): 4.2 degrees
Keppler (Shock): 5th Jäger Division, 5, 26, 73.ID, SS PzGrenadier Division, Panzer Brigade 100/II
Khrulev (Defend): 14th, 19th Rifle Division, Red Army remnants

It has begun, and all is going according to plan. The city is surrounded and the port blockaded. It may take some time as food and ammunition stocks are high, but the city will be ours.

Novaya Ladoga (Forest): 1.7 degrees
Wilkama (Assault): 28th Jäger Division, 169.ID, 2nd schwere Panzer Division, 6th Divisioona
Korzun (Defend): Proletarian Division, 66th Tankovaya Diviziya, NKVD detachment

The swamps are once again our main enemy. Even this mass of men will not be enough.

Peno (Hills): 0.2 degrees
Fischer (Assault): Panzer Abteilung (zbV) 40, Infanterie Regiment Großdeutschland, 3rd Divisioona
Filatov (Delay): 9th, 14th Mechanised, 15th NKVD Division

Fischer’s men are slowly clearing the hillsides, but they need to speed up before Stavka orders reinforcements

Osinovets (Forest): 4.1 degrees
Gorodnianskiy (Reckless Assault): 42nd Tankovaya Diviziya
Raus (Backhand Blow): Panzer Brigade “Estland”

Our panzertruppen can take no more and must soon retreat.

Moskva Armee (List)
Objectives: Demjansk, Peno, Valdaj, Pstashkov, Krasnomayskiy

31-1Mosc_zps6fa0c9a2.jpg

Victories: Nil
Defeats: Smolensk, Mitino, Kresttsy

Demjansk (Forest): 4.2 degrees
Von Schobert (Assault): 50.ID
Hadeev (Defend): Proletarian Division

70% of the city is in our hands, and we hope soon to conclude operations.

Krasnyy (Plains): 4.0 degrees
Rodin (Attack): III Cuerpo International, 80th “Donbass” Rifle Division
Weiss (Defend): 11.ID, 25.ID (mot)

The Russians hope to outlast us, and they may succeed in doing so.

Nelidovo (Forest): 4.2 degrees
Zakharov (Breakthrough): 13th Guards Poltava, 90th Tankovaya Diviziya
Hansen (Defend): 1st PzD, 76.ID

Hansen is secure

Panzerarmee Hoth (Hoth)
Objectives: Smolensk, Krasnyy, Golynski, Minsk, Salihorsk, Hlusk

32-1Hoth_zpsf9c80bab.jpg

Victories: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rahachow, 1st and 2nd Nieswiez, Krasnyy, Hlusk, Nelidovo, Akciabrski
Defeats:

Chavusy (Plains): 4.0 degrees
Von Arnim (Attack): 16.ID (mot) “Horki”
Zubarev (Defend): 9th “Crimean” Cavalry Division

Still some work to do, but Jodl should win this battle (12/9)
The Soviet cavalry will soon have to mount up and head east, our tanks in hot pursuit – Jold has been forced to leave but he did what was needed.

Malkowicze (Marsh): 4.1 degrees
Schulz (Blitz): 13, 22, 386.ID (mot)
Murayev (Defend): Opolcheniye, 7th “Armenian” Gorno-Cavalry Diviziya

Relieving the trapped 22.ID (mot) is a demanding job, but the motorised infantry are not flinching as they slowly creep forward. The only encouragement is that there are signs that the enemy is not receiving sufficient supply. (6/9)
Schulz is keeping his men in good order and has penetrated quite deeply into the swamp. There is now some hope that the trapped division can be rescued. (12/9)
The Proletarian Division has had enough: now to deal with the other recalcitrant Soviet units.

Dukovshchina (Forest): 4.2 degrees
Galkin (Shock): 38th Tankovaya, 16th Mechanised Diviziya, 9th Poineer Brigade
Leeb (Defend): 10.ID (mot)

The forests are giving Leeb plenty of cover and he is using it well.

Armee of the Pripyat (Dollman)
Objectives: Borodjanka, Malyn, Korosten, Zhytomyr, Volodarsk Volynski

33-1Prip_zpseea572d9.jpg

Victories: Borodjanka
Defeat:Nil

Lelchysty (Marsh): 4.3 degrees
Strecker (Assault): 24, 207.ID
Martiroysan (Defend): 77th “Azerbaijan” Diviziya, 7th Brigada Morskoi

Who authorises these insane ventures?

Rostov Armee (Henrici)
Objectives: Defensive line along the Dniepr

Victories: Melitopol, Vesele, 1st Hlobyne, Voznesenske, Berezan
Defeat: 2nd Hlobyne

It is the turn of Rostov Armee to rest and recuperate

Panzerarmee von Manstein (von Manstein)
Objective: Boryspil, Berezan, Pryluky, Pyriatin, Brovary, Borodjanlka

35-1Manst_zpseb39647b.jpg

Victories: Malyn, Narodychi, Boryspil
Defeats: Chornobai

Kozelshchyna (Plains): 4.2 degrees
Von Hubicki (Assault): 9.PzD
Fogel (Defend): 21st, 5th, 42nd Tankovaya, 18th Guards, 95th “Moldavian”, 1st Infantry (semi-motorised) Division

Amazingly, 9.PzD is doing well against this mass of enemy soldiers. Not well enough, sadly, to triumph against the odds.

Dobryn (Marsh): 4.2 degrees
Von Speck (Shock): 13.ID (mot)
Pavlov (Counter-attack): 4th, 99th Tankovaya, 2nd NKVD Rifle Diviziya, Red Army remnants

Another swamp battle that achieves little except to exhaust everyone involved.

Army of the Crimea (von Falkenhorst)
Objectives: Telenesti, Rezina, Balta, Lyubashevka

36-1Crim_zps4afb889b.jpg

Victories: 1st and 2nd Romanesti
Defeats: Nil

Ovidiopol (Plains): 4.1 degrees
Von Stockhausen (Shock): 1st Marine Division, KG Kempf, Alpini Corps Legion
Bagramian (Counter-attack): 12th, 38th, 40th, 10th Tankovaya Diviziya

Losses are heavy against the enemy armour, but victory is close.

Tighina (Plains): 4.1 degrees
Belous (Attack): Opolcheniye, 30th “Kirovgrad”, 19th “Voronezh”, 30th “Irkutsk” Rifle Diviziya
Ricagno (Elastic Defence): RES: 3rd Alpini Division “Julia”, Monte Cervino Alpine Ski Battalion

With first access to what supplies can get landed at Odessa, Belous has terrorised the Italians who are already fleeing.

Ochakiv (Plains): 4.1 degrees
Von Pfeffer-Wildenbruch (Attack): SS Slovakian Infantry Division
Kurdyumov (Defend): 6th Guards Rovno Division, 9th, 14th Border Guard Brigade, 2nd Coastal Fortification Brigade

An even tussle, despite the Soviet numbers

Nice, an attack on Leningrad! also the Romanians seems to have gathered their entire might to throw out the Soviets of Bessarabia, good news.
Not so good is that the Soviets seems to either set themselves up for a large pocket or trying to break out and surround the entire north front

"DOH!" ... "Curses, foiled again!" ... and other similar clichés ... wait ... did I just get the thingy right this time?? By gum I think I did! And just when I thought my years as a developer had thoroughly and permanently dulled my grammatical sense.

I have a software engineer in my Semantics class: she claims learning the logic of language helps her - as I cannot understand what she does this could be true.

I thought that you would be running low on rares again and getting the gulf of finland bonus to your rare production would stave that problem off a lot.

Ah - alles ist klar! No, I still have years of RM stockpiled (65k from memory). But I do want the GoF bonus for leadership: my officer level is down to 69%.

What are the estimated sizes of Leningrad and Odessa pockets?

Leningrad is three divs, Odessa seems to be 20+.

I hope somebody takes care of the latvian partisans soon.

I had ignored it, hoping my security korps would clear it up. But I had forgotten that they were too far south the be impacted. So I have detached a couple of units to clear it up.

Ah, the Great Hunt for Potato.

Weirdest minor fronts of the WW2...

You have lost me - can you give me a hint?

do you have some Cav or Mil to deal with those guerrillas?

I have some garrison/mil police in Poland who can deal with them.

I don't mean to be a prude but you've used that picture of a tiger back on page 83.

I thought it looked familiar and wondered if I had. To be honest, I couldn't spend the time to trawl through and check all my files. Still, it is a nice photo and it will do you good to look at it again.

But I am glad someone has a better memory than me. Keep up the good work and try to keep me honest.

That's because the Germans only have one Tiger left at this point.

"What'chu talkin' 'bout, Willis?" I have four Tiger brigades (two each in 1st and 2nd schwere tank divs). But extremely unlikely to have more, given the cost and m/f time.

And it singlehandedly took down 200 Shermans and T-34s :p

Thankfully no Shermans encountered to date. But they have been able to deal with all the Soviet units so far.

Nice, an attack on Leningrad! also the Romanians seems to have gathered their entire might to throw out the Soviets of Bessarabia, good news.
Not so good is that the Soviets seems to either set themselves up for a large pocket or trying to break out and surround the entire north front

L'grad is going to be easy but the sheer numbers in Odessa (and my lack of regular infantry in the area) are a problem. It doesn't help that I have had to send 5-6 divs to block further western expansion from the Pripyat and simultaneously put pressure at the neck. I think, however, that the bulge may have reached its maximum size: lack of supply at the front due to my forcing the supply line through marsh provinces.

Lol. Just imagine if two Tigers were in the east. All of the Wehrmachts problems would be over !!

It may take more than that to solve the Wehrmacht's problems. I was going to provide you with a list of the problems but it would be too disheartening.

Update probably tomorrow, but can't promise a date for the next: my first exam is Saturday week (I strongly disagree with having exams on the weekend) and my oral hearing before the High Court is on 14th Nov.

Have located Latvian jokes on internet.

Is cruel. No Latvian like potato so big. Or have sad life. Much Latvians happy potato people.

Sorry to all Latvians: after reading a few it gets addictive.

EDIT:

Seriously, why Latvia and potatoes? I can understand Italians and spaghetti, Chinese and noodles and all the other links, including my own Irish ancestors and potatoes. (The English scored well with roast beef, the French badly with snails and frog legs).

But as someone in the southern hemisphere, I would never have linked Latvia and potatoes. I vaguely remember some US state is reputed to have a lot (Ohio? Idaho?) but try as I might, cannot think of any reason for Latvia. Is the climate/soil good for potatoes? Has it become a staple or favourite food? (I am sure it is not native - from somewhere in the Andes?).

Is there a cultural link? A film or song with Latvians and potatoes?

Is there a Latvian in the house?

The joke is cruel. There is no happiness. Such is life. Soviets come and take everything. No potato was spared. Is dark.

I had always associated the Irish with potatoes -- what with that famine in I think the 19th century that I have been told was the cause of a mass migration here to the US. I did not know Latvians have also been associated with potatoes in common parlance. As for my own ethnic background, yes, roast beef for the English, licorice for the Dutch/Frisian, and a Dreyse needle gun for the Prussian. I hear the Prussians lived and died (and presumably ate) with said weapon.

As for programming helping grammar ... I suppose so up to a point. Yes, one tends to think in structured forms all the time thereby making the general idea of good grammar easier to deal with, but the actual implementation of correct grammatical concepts is best left to linguistic experts. I have not taken an English course in nineteen years, and have never taken a French course in all my born days.

Another thought about the war progress ... the timing might be shaping up just perfectly for you regarding the Pripyat problem. Assuming you can finish off Odessa within six weeks or so, and I think that is reasonable given those two sizable Romanian stacks barreling into the picture, the troops from Odessa can be shipped north in order to fight more ill-supplied Russian troops in the marshes during the winter when I think (correct me if I'm wrong) it is actually easier to fight in marsh terrain due to the ice. This does assume you are able to squeeze the bulge's neck sufficiently however.

Doppelgänger: the Untold Story of the Third Reich

It was no surprise that the surge of troops from Odessa succeeded in pushing the Italian Alpini from Tighina. General Ricagno showed good sense in evacuating the province early, and losses were not too bad. Belous should enjoy his victory while he can: regular and SS infantry divisions are on their way. The rest of the night’s activities were all attacks by the Heer, all of which appear winnable. Kullmer’s combined arms should be able to drive Obukhov’s large force from Brovary, north of Kyiv. In Chornobai 28.ID is up against three divisions, but General von der Chevallerie is sure that the enemy units are extremely weak, giving his men a chance to take another province north of the Dniepr. The most likely winner is General Strauss. Krasnoperekop is held by 26th Tankovaya, the unit 277.ID previously defeated in Chaplynka.

Yakymivka was hit at dawn, and General von Senger und Etterlin is worried. Half his force is Hungarian and he believes that nearly 100,000 men are heading his way, with tanks and mechanised units. That news presaged two bad defeats: Dobryn and Mitino. Nothing needs to be said about Dobryn other than it was a mud battle, but Mitino was a shock. Many of the losses were Italians from the expeditionary force, but that did not mitigate the pain. Our victory in Nelidovo was much better at soothing any concerns we had.

1-119Yakymivka_zps08355bc2.jpg

The Red Army reacts at the threat to the Crimea

There was some alarm at news that Andreapol was under attack – what were Soviet forces doing that far west? That the target is defended by a Finnish division did not engender much confidence when it was confirmed that the attacker was an armoured unit.

That was all forgotten when the victories of Chavusy and Ovidiopol were announced. I should have said “victories”: nobody was celebrating the outcome of those two battles. 7,000 dead in Chavusy was shock enough, but that figure was more than tripled in Ovidiopol where the Soviet tanks and armoured vehicles slaughtered our infantry. The massacre only stopped when close to 100,000 SS infantry arrived and dealt with the enemy armour. The Italians and gebirgsjägers who bore the brunt of the losses are out of action for a while.

The bad news was not over. The next two battles were both defeats, and involved another 10,000 dead. Kozelshchyna was not unexpected, but Yakymivka had only been going for 8 hours. The losses were mainly Hungarian, from 8th Gépkocsizó dandár, one of the two units that had been “donated” to us without warning.

Stavka reinforced success by launching tanks at Kremenchuk, hoping to exploit the apparent weakness of the Wehrmacht at the extreme east of our penetration of the Ukraine across the Dniepr. The Heer was not looking at that area, instead supporting the consolidation of our grip on Kyiv by sending 37.ID (mot) to take Bobrovytsya.

2-1t-34_zps7a05da3b.jpg

The new T-34s with plentiful accompanying infantry are causing problems

All this occurred before I had even reached the Reichskanzlei at 9AM! Casualties in the region of 56,000 men, 5 lost battles and three “victories” that barely deserved the name. Could the Heer stand the shock?

If the amount of activity is an indication, the Heer is in fine shape. Kyeysing, finding his access to Ovidiopol blocked by two infantry divisions, was still able to assemble 60,000 men to clear them out. Hansen had another attempt at Mitino (though I think it too is doomed to failure). As are the single division attacks by light infantry on Kozelshchyna and Mahdalynivka. We should take Akciabrski, Bohnstedt’s attack on 76th Tankovaya going well.

The Russians limited themselves to another feeble attack on Sestroresk, some NKVD and remnant units being ordered to waste their lives.

That signalled the end of day which had few if any bright points. 8 battles completed, 13 started. Close to 60,000 dead in a day. As an ex-history teacher, I can only cling to the memory of the 2nd Punic War. Rome lost about the same number of men in one day at Cannae. But she called up her reserves (including some slaves) and fought on to eventual victory. We must do the same.

The workers who finished their contracts in Shpola have been transferred to Gaivoron, which has become a node in our supply network, as well as an important air base. We need to keep investing in infrastructure: much of the Luftwaffe is again grounded due to lack of supplies, fuel and replacement parts.

3-1Forced-workers5_zpsc5cf668e.jpg

As is the universal rule, there must be twice as many onlookers as men actually doing road work.

The Heer was still demonstrating that it had not lost the will to take the fight to the enemy, even if some of its choices are far too risky for me. Slawharad is one such attack, 86.ID (mot) against a tank and two cavalry divisions. Whether this aggressive spirit can be maintained is the question, particularly as more defeats were suffered. We won Ovidiopol, where the weight of our advance could not be resisted by the Soviet infantry, but that was the sole victory of the four decided overnight. Our beachhead in Sestroresk is under threat due to the loss in Osinovets, Lelchytsy was as usual an abject failure. Even Mitino was worse than expected, enemy losses immaterial while ours were well over 2,000.

Luckily the poor state of many of our units (or more correctly, the weakness of the front line due to the withdrawal of some many divisions for rebuilding) must have escaped the notice of Stavka. Apart from sending a naval brigade into Zhubrovychi the Red Army was content to maintain the status quo. Considering that even victories like Bobrovytsya cost us more than they did the enemy, perhaps that is a viable strategy. On the other hand, Akciabrski, which also began the day before, was a clear win for Bohnstedt. The last battle of the day, yet another unit getting in the way of Kreysing’s steamroller in Ovidiopol, should also end in our favour.

Gaivoron was a winner again on Monday, as more funds were approved to further expand the airbase. 19 missions were flown from our air fields, nearly as many as in the past two days combined. Far more will be needed to compensate for the huge losses on Saturday, but every bombing mission helps.

It is hard to imagine Friessner’s activities in Kresttsy doing much to turn around our adverse casualty ratio. Even if Hansen can successfully hold Nelidovo against Muzichenko’s three armour divisions he will probably be lucky to match his attacker’s losses. That was essentially all we did in the five battles that drew to a close on Monday morning. Although we won four of them, the loss ratio was about 6:5 – not disastrous, but no way to try to balance the lop-sided results of Saturday. The blame was not on the commanders who won in Krasnyy, Ovidioopol, Krasnoperekop and Sestroresk. It was the complete failure of Moser’s gebirgsjägers to cross the Dniepr at Kozelshchyna and the deaths of more than half those who tried.

Yet somehow Stumme was able to persuade General von Manstein to allow him to again attack Kozelshchyna, this time using armour. I cannot see how this attempt will end up better as Fogel still has 75,000 men and hundreds of tanks waiting on the other side.

4-121Kozel_zpse35415be.jpg

The Russian defenders are still capable of holding the river bank

Although we were allowed a slight pause north of the Pripyat, (other than a successful attempt to drive 2.PzD out of Hlusk), Stavka seized control of activity in the south. The 31,000 men of 16th Guards Rifle division marched into Ivanikva, where General Kriebel awaited the impact with 1st Gebirgsjäger and a Slovak division. The situation in Ordzhonikidze was worse, the Slovak 15th divize up against two armour divisions. Even after three victories Ovidiopol is not safe, as Ivanov has scraped up four tank divisions and some NKVD and sent them north of Odessa. Our only unit in the area is Kampfgruppe Kempf, a powerful unit it is true, but still only 16,000 men. (Tighina gave a warning of what could happen, as SS Infantry Division “Siegfried” broke and ran when hit by Belous’ 90,000 men).

More battles ended during the afternoon, half of which we won, but once again our losses in defeat far outweighed our victories. Kremenchuk was lost, but all bar 1,000 men were evacuated. Demjansk was recaptured, removing the blot on the reputation of the Moskva Armee, and the Soviet forward units were repulsed from Andreapol. The defeat was in Mahdalynivka, the twin attack with Kozelshchyna which had ended so badly in the morning. Thankfully Vierow did marginally better than Moser, but the improvement was only in the scale of the defeat.

The two battles that started late on Monday seem to me to repeats of the twin defeats of the afternoon. Neither Schubert’s marsh attack into Malaja Vishera nor Dippold’s low odds attack into Mitino promise anything but long lists of casualties. I don’t think that if the Luftwaffe sent every plane it had to those battles that they could be won.

There was a small celebratory meeting on Tuesday morning as Minister Walter Funk announced that armaments production would be increased by about 5%. There was a lot of backslapping and congratulations from those Ministers who hoped to benefit from the larger amount of manufactured goods. There would be a cost of course, as many potential soldiers will be needed to work in the factories, but we can live with that. We need to upgrade and increase the Heer to reduce casualties: that will solve the manpower crisis. For once the research team behind the production increase was allowed an exemption from call-up and was instead ordered to examine the possibility of anti-tank rockets and cannons for our ground attack aircraft. The new industrial capacity will in fact be used to increase the number of such aircraft: orders were placed for 400 Henschel 129B-2 dive bombers.

5-1Manufacture_zps37499519.jpg

Manufacture is still labour intensive, despite our improvements

The good spirits were maintained by the early news from the east. Fischer has at last cleared the hills of Peno of all Soviet troops, and reported he had inflicted heavy losses on the defenders. But then the mood returned to the now normal sense of resignation, as we heard of the triple defeats of Ordzhonikidze, Dukovshchina and Mala Vishera. Only General Leeb in Dukovshchina made the Soviets pay for their victory; the other two battles were depressingly one-sided.

There was some relief, if only indirect. Only one battle replaced those ended, and even though under pressure General Bohnstedt is quietly confident he can defeat Korchagin in Akciabrski. The other four Soviet attacks were over quickly, with our soldiers virtually unscathed.

After a quiet if subdued Tuesday, the anticipation was that Wednesday would see Stavka resume (or increase) its attacks on a weary and dispirited Heer. The Luftwaffe was still unaffected by events, maintaining its steady disruption of the enemy. It would be assisted by an increase in the size of Minsk airbase, and cheered by the news that a further increase will take place. The recapture of Demjansk will also help, once the airbase is secure and some repairs made.

The first attack showed what the Red Army had in mind. The province of Nieswiez, for some time a backwater used to rest divisions from combat, was the scene of a display of raw power. 140,000 men were deployed against von Bock’s 12.PzD. While I have great respect for both von Bock’s skill and his men’s courage, I cannot see him defeating such a mass of men and machines.

Our response was feeble: Giovanelli and 9th Motorised Infantry Division “Pasubio” from the Italian Expeditionary Force surprising SMERSH in Dukovshchina. Eight to one odds, but hardly a major blow at the enemy. While the Italians chased the hapless NKVD, 240 kilometres to the north 45.ID limped out Kresttsy, having lost 3,000 men in a vain attempt to dislodge the 64,000 defenders. Perhaps Heerlein will have better luck in the Ukraine, in Nikopol, but I am yet to be convinced that our infantry can defeat large numbers of enemy armour, especially when that armour has significant infantry support. As if to ram home the difficulty of attacking such formations, Stumme’s 5.PzD gave up the battle for Kozelshchyna, having lost a quarter of its men in just a couple of days.

Our next action was in Hlusk, von Küchler’s Aufklärungsabteilung having located 13th Mechanised Brigade unsupported in Hlusk. 13.PzD should make short work of the Russians, as long as it moves quickly. That announcement was followed quickly by victory in Zhubrovychi, the Soviet naval troops being completely outclassed. There was not much time to savour the win, Dippold’s rash assault on Mitino ending as predicted, in disaster. As will Lindemann’s adventure in Lechysty.

6-1naval_zps1fda777c.jpg

Although they did not lack courage, the brigada morskoi could not dent the defence in Zhubrovychi

In fact all the battles on both sides for the rest of the day were extremely risky, whether German or Soviet. 1st Guards Motorised Rifle Division is an elite and oversized unit, but then so is Infanterie Regiment Großdeutschland. The battle for Peno will not be a walkover. The nameless commander of the Alpini Corps Legion who led his 5,000 men into Ovidiopol must hope somebody is following him , as otherwise his men will be helpless against the Soviet tanks that are waiting. Similar in many ways to the fate that awaits 15th “Don” Cavalry when it arrives in Rahachow, held by 14.PzD. Or that dealt to the Tannu Tuvans who were foolish enough to venture into Demjansk just as Braun was making his triumphal entry. Perhaps Schwantes has a chance in Zhlobin, though he will have to rely on the thickness of his Tigers’ armour to protect his men.

There was a special news flash from Stanislawow: during debriefing some of Stumpff’s pilots claim to have sunk another flotilla of Soviet destroyers while bombing the port facilities at Odessa. It is good to see that that these missions are continuing, despite the considerable number of aircraft we lose to the enemy flak emplaced around the city.

Nevertheless, the day ended on a sour note, or two sour notes. In Akciabrski, Bohnstedt found himself badly outnumbered when at least three divisions turned up to assist 76th Tankovaya. A straightforward demolition of a weak armour division changed to a life and death struggle for 20.ID (mot), one they escaped only by losing a lot of good men. Less expensive but far more embarrassing was the defeat of “Pasubio” in Dukovshchina. Admittedly SMERSH was assisted by a mechanised brigade, but it was still a dismal effort by our allies.

Thursday saw a return to more pleasant news, at least that was what was waiting for my review in the morning. The early Luftwaffe compilation reports showed ten air units active, and signs that the day promised to be a bombing success. Plenty of targets, many of them moving in the open. We were even able to return to bombing Leningrad, a death trap for our bombers due to its heavy air defences. We lost Nelidovo overnight, but it cost us just two men for every three Russians, which made it one of our most successful battles in recent days. And we won Peno, “Großdeutschland” showing the guards what an elite unit really is.

That brief moment of, if not happiness, at least calm, was dispelled when I heard that for the fourth time in a week we were going back into Mitino. Are 15,000 dead not enough for our generals? I could understand it if such a task were given to one of our best generals with a vast force at his disposal, but to send the Finn Fägernas with just one regular Werhmacht division to help his own 3rd Divisioona is not madness, it is murder. Krüger’s attack on Dukovshchina was a bit better, but even so it could have waited until we had time to bomb the enemy to weaken their resolve.

It was a welcome change to read an item from Norway. Saltdal was ours, the SS finally defeating the regular Norwegian 1st Infanteridivisjon.

Then it was back to more insanity. Does General Adam seriously think that 3rd Cavalry Division “Amedeo Duca d’Aosta” can defeat a Soviet armoured division in Nelidovo? Does Cranz have any idea how 2nd Marine will fare up against a regular rifle division such as 19th “Voronezh” in Tighina?

To cap it all, we lost possession of Nieswiez. We can’t even defend a damn swamp! That is a bit unfair on poor von Bock, asked to hold off 140,000 attackers with his single panzer division, but I am in no mood to accept excuses. We are squandering some of the last weeks of good weather. We need some successes, and we need them soon!

Ongoing battle

Toulouse (Urban): 12.8 degrees
Kempf (Shock): 46.ID and 19 Italian units RES: 6 Italian units
De Boisseau de Ligne (Defend):1ère Division de Cuirrassée RES: 12 combat units, 18 headquarters

Vicious fighting in the suburbs, but Kempf is doing better than his predecessor. But why are the Italians just watching? We have asked them to assist.(18/9)
The Italians responded to our call and the French, down to less than 1,000 men, are facing more than 294,000 Axis soldiers.

Barbarossa at midnight 24th September 1942: ongoing battles

Leningrad Armee (Paulus)
Objectives: Petrodvorets, Tosno, Schisselburg, Osinovets, Leningrad, Sestroresk

13-1Lenin_zpsbdab8936.jpg

Victories: Sestroresk
Defeats: 1st and 2nd Mitino, Osinovets, Malaja Vishera

Leningrad (Urban): 4.2 degrees
Keppler (Attack): 5th Jäger Division, 5, 26, 73.ID, SS PzGrenadier Division, Panzer Brigade 100/II, “Estland”
Khrulev (Defend): 14th, 19th Rifle Division, Red Army remnants

It has begun, and all is going according to plan. The city is surrounded and the port blockaded. It may take some time as food and ammunition stocks are high, but the city will be ours. (18/9)
More panzers arrive, and the start of bombing. The only question is how long before the city falls.

Novaya Ladoga (Forest): 1.9 degrees
Wilkama (Attack): 169.ID, 2nd schwere Panzer Division, 6th Divisioona
Korzun (Defend): Proletarian Division, 66th Tankovaya Diviziya, NKVD detachment

The Soviets are far too well hidden and supplied to be defeated without a substantially larger force being used.

Mitino (Plains): 4.2 degrees
Fägernas (Shock): 3rd Divisioona, 79.ID
Shtevnev (Defend:) 1st Guards Division, 43rd, 90th Rifle Diviziya, 22nd Tankovaya Diviziya

This is looking like another disaster brewing.

Moskva Armee (List)
Objectives: Demjansk, Peno, Valdaj, Pstashkov, Krasnomayskiy

14-1Mosc_zpsa2a7b603.jpg

Victories: 1st Nelidovo, Krasnyy, Demjansk, Andreapol, 1st and 2nd Peno
Defeats: Kresttsy, 3rd Mitino, 2nd Nelidovo

Nelidovo (Forest): 4.2 degrees
Adam (Attack): 3rd Cavalry Division “Amadeo Duca D’Aosta”
Gordov (Defend): 59th Tankovaya Diviziya

Brave but foolish – hopefully Adam will call back his soldiers before too many are killed.

Panzerarmee Hoth (Hoth)
Objectives: Smolensk, Krasnyy, Golynski, Minsk, Salihorsk, Hlusk

15-1PAH_zps171a0ce4.jpg

Victories: Chavusy, 1st Akciabrski,
Defeats: 1st Dukovshchina, 2nd Akciabrski, Nieswiez

Rahachow (Plains): 4.0 degrees
Romanov (Attack): 15th “Don” Cavalry Division RES: NKVD detachments
Busch (Defend): 14.PzD

Busch and his men have blunted the attack and the Russians are falling back

Slawharad (Plains): 4.0 degrees
Gräser (Shock): 86.ID (mot)
Zhukov (Delay) (nullified): 31st Tankovaya, 12th “Kuban”, 16th Kavaleriy Diviziya

The river crossing has sapped the strength and enthusiasm of Gräser’s men

Hlusk (Plains): 4.0 degrees
Von Küchler (Shock): 13.PzD
Ershakov (Defend): 13th Mechanised Brigade

The Soviet mechanised unit is completely outclassed

Malkowicze (Marsh): 4.1 degrees
Schulz (Masterful Breakthrough): 13, 22, 386.ID (mot)
Murayev (Delay): Opolcheniye, 7th “Armenian” Gorno-Cavalry Diviziya

Relieving the trapped 22.ID (mot) is a demanding job, but the motorised infantry are not flinching as they slowly creep forward. The only encouragement is that there are signs that the enemy is not receiving sufficient supply. (6/9)
Schulz is keeping his men in good order and has penetrated quite deeply into the swamp. There is now some hope that the trapped division can be rescued. (12/9)
The Proletarian Division has had enough: now to deal with the other recalcitrant Soviet units. (18/9)
Not long to go: the Russians are out of food and ammunition. Reinforcements are trying to reach them, but for once the swamps are helping us.

Dukovshchina (Forest): 4.2 degrees
Krüger (Shock): 345.ID (mot)
Kirilov (Defend): 16th Mechanised Brigade, SMERSH

A successful attack that will soon get its reward

Zhlobin (Plains): 4.2 degrees
Schwantes (Blitz): 2nd schweres Panzer Division
Romanenko (Defend): 77th Tankovaya Diviziya, 3rd Heavy Tank Brigade

The Dniepr is once again crippling our attack

Armee of the Pripyat (Dollman)
Objectives: Borodjanka, Malyn, Korosten, Zhytomyr, Volodarsk Volynski

16-1AotP_zpsc9e74946.jpg

Victories: Nil
Defeat: Lelchtsy

Brovary (Plains): 4.2 degrees
Kullmer (Shock) (nullified): Condorgruppe, 18, 218.ID, 6.PzD
Obukhov (Ambush): 9th “Causcasian” Gorno, 21st Guards Rifle, 55th Tankovaya Diviziya

Kullmer may pull off a victory, but he will have to improve a great deal.

Lelchytsy (Marsh): 4.3 degrees
Lindemann (Attack): 24, 29.ID “Falken”
Golubov (Defend): 77th “Azerbaijani” Gorno Rifle Division

Another vain attempt to retake this morass.

Rostov Armee (Henrici)
Objectives: Defensive line along the Dniepr

17-1Rost_zpsbd5e51f1.jpg

Victories: Krasnoperekop
Defeat: Yakymivka, Kremenchuk, Mahdalynivka, Ordzhonikidze

Nikopol (Plains): 3.9 degrees
Herrlein (Assault): 34.ID
Suslaparov (Counter-attack): 15th Mechanised Brigade

Even against a brigade, 34.ID is struggling

Ivanivka (Plains): 7.3 degrees
Khetagurov (Attack): 16th Guards Rifle Division
Kriebbel (Defend): 9th divize

The Slovaks are not in the same league as the Guards

Mahdalynivka (Forest:) 4.1 degrees
Altrichter (Attack): 31.ID
Remezov (Ambush): 91st Border Guards Brigade, 23rd Guards Rifle Division

Few of our soldiers have made it across the river, and none of them have survived.

Panzerarmee von Manstein (von Manstein)
Objective: Boryspil, Berezan, Pryluky, Pyriatin, Brovary, Borodjanlka

18-1PAvM_zps4523a536.jpg

Victories: Bobrovytsya, Zhubrovychi
Defeats: Dobryn, 1st and 3rd Kozelshchyna

Chornobai (Plains): 4.2 degrees
Von und zu Gilsa (Masterful Blitz): 10.PzD
Kurasov (Defend): 96th Tankovaya Diviziya

Our panzers are worn out and must stop soon

Army of the Crimea (von Falkenhorst)
Objectives: Telenesti, Rezina, Balta, Lyubashevka

19-1AotC_zpsdfb02086.jpg

Victories: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Ovidiopol,
Defeats: Tighina

Ovidiopol (Plains): 4.1 degrees
Kreysing (Attack): 3rd Marine, 10th Gebirgsjäger Division, Notfallgruppe, 51st SS Freiwilligen ID “Wotan”, 225.ID, 2nd SS Infantry Brigade
Ivanov (Defend): 56th Tankovaya Diviziya

The Red Army is determined to make us pay for this province

Tighina (Plains): 4.1 degrees
Cranz (Attack): 2nd Marine Division
Belous (Defend): 19th “Voronozevh” Rifle Division

The Marines are strong enough to deal with the fatally weakened Russians

"What'chu talkin' 'bout, Willis?" I have four Tiger brigades (two each in 1st and 2nd schwere tank divs). But extremely unlikely to have more, given the cost and m/f time.

2 in each, that is a waste, they are much more effective with one in 4 than 2 in 2 :)

And a request: could we get some closeups on the important combats (for example Leningrad and later Odessa, Sevastopol etc.), ie. the attack overview (if possible with the combat stats).
