I think the crusades aren't just lacking a flavor, but in mechanics as well. For instance, Jerusalem shouldn't be annexed by one of the participating kingdoms, but be created as an independant kingdom ruled by a dynasty (AI should just grant independance to far-away lands in general, IMHO). Merchant Republics should have the opportunity to give boats in exchange for a favor (a small one, such as sacking Constantinople on the way).

Jerusalem should go to the most active general in the crusade. Jerusalem wasn't given to some nobody.

"whacky shit would tend to happen" (this was before "emergent stories" or "procedural storytelling" had become buzzwords... )

Not to worry though folks; I still regard the crusades, and kings, to be major features! (And yes, the crusade mechanics could be a lot better.)

Whacky Shit makes for great buzzwords, if you ask me. Oh, and did you just confirm that the crusade mechanics will be improved?

The funny thing is that some of those who complain about only crusades today seem to have been those who asked for other DLC:s previously. And they still have not learned that PDS decides, and not them, they only suggest, and should try to suggest a bit more logically. :p I think that it was great that doomdark setled the whole China issue and stated his opinion, which in my opinion is logical if adequate game mechanics are added.
He can say whatever he wants, it doesn't change anything. Devs like him just ruined the game by transforming it into a monsters with useless areas and viking superhumans.
This game was meant to be about Crusades. They changed their mind and look at what we got now... Not very nice indeed.
It was never meant to be about the crusades more than anything else. Already in the post-motem DD and before they wanted to do DLC:s to expand playability and add new options.

The name is more than fine. It's catchy, and obviously has not dampened sales- which helps us all get more Dev love for the title. Crusader Kings, ok we can be argue about definitions but the game is not incompatible with normal usage of the words. Heck, I bet a fair few people didn't know exactly what the crusades were before playing the game.

If anything EU was a name that was obscure to me.

Yet Richard the Lionhearted was not made KoJ ... the most active participant by any measure.

Because there was already a king of Jerusalem at this date... ;) But how would you do it? It should not go to some random dude.

I have no satisfactory answer :( A rework of mechanic system is really needed. Perhaps the Pope (Caliph) could "anoint" a "successor" to the title - a generated character placed in a participating dynasty. It is not historically correct but I do not know if it could be done in a less ham-fisted way.

Edit:
He was offered the throne on one occasion, but he refused it.At any rate, his father's cousins had a much better claim to the throne than he did.

And this supports my point.

Why in the world would the pope appoint a new king of Jerusalem when there already is one?For one,the native barons wouldn't have accepted it.Another thing is that it goes against the 'natural order' of the feudal world. It's one thing for the pope to appoint someone to a throne if the existing king has been excommunicated for crimes,it's another to usurp the throne of a legitimate monarch.

And like I said,Richard was offered the throne on one occasion but he rejected it.

Yet Richard the Lionhearted was not made KoJ ... the most active participant by any measure.

Downside of not being able to quote chains. Thure was responding to somebody saying KoJ should be created as an independent kingdom (although that quoted only implied the dynasty ruling it would be random) - of course, if there is no preexisting claim it does go to the most active participant (according to the game).

Richard didn't take Jerusalem and there was a pre-existing title holder in any event.

Why in the world would the pope appoint a new king of Jerusalem when there already is one?

My assumption at this point (making me an ***) was that this would be the mechanic for an initial crusade for "k_title" - an existing title claimant should be taken into consideration and if there are no issues involving interdiction or crusaders going wild that claimant should take precedence. I'm sorry I was not complete in my thought.

Here are the questions you need to ask when assigning spoils of victory for a Crusade:
  1. Does the kingdom already have a king/queen of your religion? If yes, give to him/her. If no, go to 2.
  2. Does the kingdom have any strong claimants of your religion? If yes, give to the oldest male character with a claim. If there are no men, then give to the oldest female character with a claim. If no, go to 3.
  3. Does the kingdom have any weak claimants of your religion? If yes, give to the oldest male character with a claim. If there are no men, then give to the oldest female character with a claim. If no, go to 4.
  4. Is the kingdom within the de jure territory of an empire that has a holder/claimant of your religion? If yes, give to one with strongest claim (preference towards male and old). If no, go to 5.
  5. Give kingdom to crusader with highest value of some combination of prestige, piety, warscore contribution, and opinions of fellow crusaders. Exclude any characters that are currently kings/emperors and lack provinces bordering the newly formed kingdom.
The balancing of 5 is key. The current warscore-only system heavily favors existing kings. And the second sentence is also critical since you need a king in-situ for overseas victories; the King of England couldn't have hoped to administer Jerusalem after the First Crusade.

Take the Crusade suggestions, to the Suggestion forum. I promise I'll tell you all how bad your ideas are there :D
Yeah, right. Like you'd do it. Everyone knows that Devs don't visit CK2 suggestion forum. Probably so they wouldn't get depressed from the bad ideas.:)

Also to point out, even if I would want to answer to some suggestions, I won't. That is a pandoras box waiting to consume the forum. Been down that road plenty of times. It all depends on the mood of the thread really and especially who was it that posted that suggestion.
But...confusion
