So, having played a game of this yesterday, I have a sort-of-functioning colony, with periodic crises of shortages probably caused by my inefficient layouts (I basically went in with no foreknowledge of any of the game mechanics, so learned-by-doing and reading the ingame suggestions).

However, I am pretty sure that my existing domes are woefully inefficient, and having looked at some of the threads here, it seems clear that some things I had thought might work, will not.

So, I'm reading that domes have to essentially be self-contained? which would mean that each dome would provide little in the way of export - there's no possibility to have an "industrial dome" with more than 1 factory, and so on, right ?

Has anyone come up with some good, efficient layouts for their domes ?

Due to... reasons... I have two small domes that I've evacuated and powered-off, which gives me an opportunity to rebuild them as efficient ones. I also have the tech for building medium sized domes.

So, what are good layouts for small, medium, and large domes ?

It will always depend on what you want, need and what breakthrough you have.

The small domes can run well (producing babies well) with two apartment, an arcology, one farm, and the three remaining slice used as needed, you can have almost no unmet needs with two service slice and one production slice, or a not as nice but still functional one with two production slice and a single service slice.

Medium Domes can work similar with three apartment and an arcology, one farm (esp if you have some boost from tech or otherwise, two if no extra source of food), then you can have practically anything you want, since two third of the dome is still empty. usually build a school and a children slice for next generation, one or two slice production and the third side for service and maybe some extra research or anything that needs to be done. The most important is to not finish it, wait and add what you need, a med dome is huge compared to the small one (twice size and three extra small spot for recreation)

The larger ones are build whatever you want, probably you can do all buildings in them and have extra space, the onyl limit is the one spire for them (except for the oval, but that one needs a breakthrough)

I don't see why not?
I certainly have a food dome for example. I then distribute the food to my other domes via tunnels and transporters.
Now, as the game is currently working, the distribution is a bit unfortunate as it needs two rovers to guarantee a "balance", but it definitely works and I haven't looked at food production in a while, because there is no problem whatsoever.

I mean like, you couldn't put three apartments and three factories in one small dome, with the colonists travelling to a neighbouring dome for recreation and stuff ?

What about domes to support the exterior buildings - the polymer factory and fungi farm, for example. Extra service things to improve morale and sanity caused by them having to go outside to work ?

So, a good plan to reactivate my two small domes would be:
Arcology, 2 Apartments, Farm, 2 services segments, and the last segment used for what I want the dome to concentrate on ? e.g. a machine factory, or an electronic factory ?

Yep, that will get you lots of workforce, so you can run mines/polymer and other outside buildings as you need, you can switch better homes or other spire if no mines and no need for extra polymer. (fungal farm is mostly useless, a single farm can feed an entire med dome at mid/late game, and if you have any other boost for food, you will swim in them. And this is funny since food would be one of the hardest on mars in good quality and quantity)

If you have a lot of water, two extra anyway, and have the Hanging Garden researched, or started with Ecologist, that adds +30 comfort to your houses. That with apartments gets you 65 comfort.

Try and have your domes overlap their influence areas so that a Polymer Factory or Fungal Farm can be staffed by both domes as needed.
