Is this a known bug? I wonder where all of Pisa's trade posts went and...they've become feudal. Within the current ruler's lifetime, too--he was part of a patrician family and was elected by the patrician system as you can see.

He has a strong claim on a title which means he could have been landed before. The first holding a character gets sets his government type so if he was first landed with a castle his government type becomes Feudal (this can never change for that character) so when he inherited that King title the government changed to Feudal (his government type). Check the history of that title he has a claim on. Note that the game does not tell you directly what government type a character has (if any) - every unlanded character in a court shows as that court's government type but if that courtier had been landed before then his government type could be different than what it shows.

Are you sure? I thought that, if you inherited a higher-tier title, you would adopt that government form. If that's correct, the pictured character would have needed to hold a feudal kingdom before being elected to Pisa. Which is unlikely.

Another explanation is if Pisa lost territory: If the doge's only remaining holding was an inland castle, I believe he would convert to feudal. (Similar things happen very frequently when doges lose all their holdings except an inland city - they become normal republics instead of MRs. And I'm not sure what would happen if the doge was forced onto a castle in a coastal county - maybe this would also make them feudal?)

Ah, that might be it, jonjowett!

As yxklyx recommended I checked the title he had a claim on and yeah, he lost it to a peasant revolt...

...and not only that, but his one currently-held county, he ALSO lost and regained!

These are all coastal, not inland, but maybe he only had a castle left at some point during all this?

(Whatever the case, what an interesting life this little realm has had lately...)

His primary county/holding was probaly a CASTLE then he changes to feudal. that is it.
Known feature for ages in CK2 . is also the way to create Merchant Republic by having a vassal with primary holding county a city. or making Merchant Republic feudal again.

Yeah, I think it's basically that. One of his counties was conquered by that adventurer, who forcefully settled as his vassal like adventurers sometimes do, and then he lost the other county to a peasant uprising, and having no more demesne he automatically usurped the adventurer's county back from her, only since she's feudal she'd made the castle the capital/the only one she was directly holding (presumably handing out the city that had been his holding previously to a baron-tier vassal), so he got the castle, and became feudal himself.

Well don't know if it is helpfull or not.

But to make Prince Bishops (not playable without mods playable Papacy is a great mod to flesh out the system) the Primary County holding is a Temple.
Then ad a Duchy or higher title on top.
Why have Prince Bishops ? the cathedrals fully build provide a decent income and decent levy. and as catholic you get to engage in the Papacy Election.
System is half fleshed out never finished.

To make Merchant Republic vassals. primary holding county needs to be a city and coast based, then ad duchy or higher title on top.
They provide the biggest income. (the AI sadly acting stupid on purpose. makes it that the 4 patrician vassals are not used to make them n1 in everything cause of 5 family palaces troops, 5x retinue )

To make Feudal Primary holding needs to be a Castle. the feudal provides the most LEVY when fully fleshed out building.

To make merchant republic (not playable and not worth bothering cause nothing is fleshed out for it. even if modded to be playable) primary holding needs to be a city again, and not coast or sea based.

Now that leaves mercenaries and holy order. mercenaries are totally not playable , unless you cheat mod with feudal subterfuge.
Varagian guard had some nice events... but others have nothing.

Holy orders can still be playable with console commands or mods. the events for them are still there especially for the well known templars teutonic knights and knights hospitaller.
