actually I was bit tired of all the conquering everybody did so The Habsburgs got of quite easy.... Besides, if Austria was severely handicapped then who would oppose us?

I think it would be kind of boring if no nations were strong enough to threaten us.

When I started to play with my mind set on not firghting any wars, but it didn't quite end that way. ;)

1st November 1480:
Excellent! Today I finally managed to secure peace with the accursed Germans, forcing them to cede Steiermark to us! This is a major victory and it was only possible because of my superior intellect! My petty advisors wanted to accept the cash offers we received, but I saw in my wisdom that a far greater price was within our reach. We now have control over a major goldmine and it will enrich our economy greatly! Furthermore it has weakened the Habsburgs considerately and they will now have to look elsewhere for expansion as we have shown them that our border is well defended!

19th June 1481:
Today we signed a peace-deal with the Danes. They have to pay us a minor cash settlement and keep from attacking us ever again, this last part was my own brilliant way of ensuring peace for the next decades and it will be my legacy to the next generations.
Although the war began to go completely wrong after the peace with Austria we won in the end. On the 15th of December Denmark landed 15000 at the City gates and surprisingly drove our main army on the run. This news spread across the country and inspired the Moslem in Antalya to rebel. I guess the finally discovered that they were taxed more than everybody else…
My great diplomatic negotiation skills were was talked about in every court in Europe and I must say that my fame was well earned! (Great rep).

23rd of March the 17000 Danes was killed to the last man (or woman) and the Siege of Venice was lifted. May the 13th saw the last attack on Venice from Denmark with 19000 silly soldiers.
When not even that, could frighten the mighty imperial army they agreed to my above mentioned peace-proposal.

1st January 1483:
Although some people claim, that ‘nothing happens on new years day', I prove them, wrong. Today I spent a pleasant afternoon with the cardinal, bringing the usual donations and he replied by sending out 1 additional priest. This time to the island of Corfu, now official naval base, for our Imperial navy. I also received a letter from our trading agents in the barbarian city of Berlin, saying that they had been publicly ridiculed on new years eve and to this I reassured them that there would be a violent response from our army sometime within the next couple of years. (Merchants harassed, CB Brandenburg)

1st of February 1483:
Austria has apparently not given up hope on returning Steirmark to their control as their agents have incited the peasants to rebel. They are quickly slain, however, and the agents have been hunted down and are now telling their most inner secrets to our interrogation officers deep below the streets of Venice.

1st July 1483:
Once again a marriage between house Habsburg and a Venetian family have been arranged. And this time I sincerely hope that the girl have been properly trained in the noble art of spying so that she will not meet the same destiny as the former girl married in Austria. She was caught spying shortly before the war and was promptly hanged.
On the same day a formal state gift was sent to the leaders of Genoa. A solid gold statue of myself , so that they can see how a truly magnificent and chivalric person looks. Naturally they were ecstatic (relations greatly improved)

18th December 1483:
This afternoon I was approached of some nobles from Lombardy assuring me that they were ready to join our realm but they needed as minor donation for the plan to be financed. They seemed like honest chaps, so I gave them a the money they needed and I eagerly await the rebellion in Lombardy.(Support for Dissidents Abroad, rel lowered with Austria. As if they could get any lower....)

1st February 1484:
Today yet another priest was sent forth, this time to Bulgaria. I suspect that the cardinal must be one of the wealthiest men of the entire Empire now. I have never heard more from the so-called ‘nobles’ and I now I suspect them to have been nothing more than common thieves. Curses!

1st December 1484:
I have decided that now that I have reached the middle of my reign after 6 years (I plan to sit for at least another 6!), I will embark on a great journey throughout my…eurhmm. THE Realm, visiting every province to see what can be done to improve them. I am sure that the useless governors working at the province capitals will be more than eager to listen to advice from such a magnificent person such as myself...

1st January 1485:
I have reached our most western possession, Sardinia. I must say I cannot understand why the governor has not improved our defences on this western bulwark. Of course he claimed to have sent numerous letters to the Doge palace asking for funds to increase the effectiveness of the fortress. Nonsense of Course!
If such a letter had been written I would of course have granted the funds as it would be silly not to! I have written a letter to the imperial treasury ordering the expansion of the fortress on Sardinia.

1st February 1485:
We have now reached the former capital of the Papal state, Rome. I held a speech at the largest square in this magnificent city. Somehow the Romans (?) did not approve of me telling them that their incorporation into the magnificent merchant empire was only a matter of time since their soldiers was of such a poor quality and that their generals during the last war had shown no common sense regarding battle tactics. Apparently some former soldiers were present at the scene and they immediately incited the entire city to rebel against the lord (me!) I cannot understand why they did it. What was so wrong in telling them the truth? (Rome rebels)

1st November 1485:
After a visiting provinces all over the place we have now finally arrived in the eastern province of Bujak. I held a speech last night concerning the Orthodox way of them worshipping the one true God™. I also informed them that they would most likely be the next target of one of the cardinals priests. That was not well received! After a couple of hours the entire Province was up in arms and they marched on to do battle with the army present there. Since this revolt was so unexpected the army was caught completely by surprise. It was forced on the run towards Dobrudja. Unfortunately it has left my scribe and I behind….

15th November 1485
After living on the countryside during the last two weeks we have nearly reached the province capital, where the rebels are besieging the castle of Aaaarrrrgghhhh…

Tomb.jpg

( thus ends the rule of Giovanni Mocenigo, his last entry to his diary was dictated to his faithful Scribe(!) during their run towards the castle in Bujak. Unfortunately for the poor Doge a rebel archer saw them and swiftly shot and killed Giovani Mocenigo. Ending 7 years of horrible rule by one of the most ignorant Doges ever.)

I love the "I'm so magnificent" style the doge used in his writings. Such a truely superior man should be rightly proud of his achievements.

Well done kurtbrian. We've got out own souvenir beer stiens now. :)

For an incompetant Doge, he sure did a lot for the realm. Yes, now WE have the gold province that the JV had and lost (do they have it again, well, it's only a matter of time before it is lost again anyway, as their horrific mismanagement costs them all their lands:p ). The glory of Venice advances, and the A Team is CLEARLY dominant.:p

I blame the Autrians! If they had dishonoured their alliance they would have gotton away freely as I had no intent to declare any wars.

Suits them right for their ignorance:mad:

"Although some people claim, that ‘nothing happens on new years day', I prove them, wrong." Nice try at slipping a U2 quote past us. :)

Hats off to you A-Team guys - that is a seriously nice bit of Empire you've got going there.

I reckon Austria may gve you a run for your money later on though - they're shaping up to be a major power in due course, and what with you having spent all your cash on those conversions... well, we'll just have to wait and see... ;)

Marco Barbango: the Rightous Reformer

In the Lap of Luxurey: the early years

Marco Barbango, the youngest Doge to hold office up until that point in history, was born on May 24th 1442 in the the city of Venice. The oldest of 7 children, and the eldest son of three, young Marco often found himself the target of his families ambitions and dreams.

The Barbango family in the mid-15th century was a family on the rise. Giovanni Barbango, often consitered to have been the founder of the family, was a notible merchant to seems to have worked his way from poverty and extablished himself among the burgeoning merchant-nobility of the Venetian Republic in the late 14th century.

A crude, and rather course figure, Giovanni made a name for himself by being an outspoken opponent to the ruling Doge, and manuvering through the troubles alliances of the time. When he died in 1421 he left behind a cosndierable fortune, 4 sons, and a legacy which was both grand and vulgar.

Augustine Barbango, his eldest son, continued the familiy's rise to pwoer and fame, through shrewed power dealing, which gained him the name "The Spider", as anyone who crossed him was sure to be caught in his web of contacts.

The family is said to have reached its first zenith of power under the reign of Augustine Barbango II, perhapse one of the strongest men that Venice has ever known. It was said that he controlled the actions od gode himself, his power was so great, and even the Pope called upon him for advice. Sadly, only one great dream of his remained unfulfilled; Augustine would never reach the high office which he sought for much of his adult life. He would never be Doge.

Marco grew up expected that he would take on the family mantle and propell them, once and for all, into the dogeship. It never occured to Augustine II that he, from the youngest age, wished to enter the priest hood. At 12 years of age, young Marcos fled home and attempted to be accepted into the near by monastary but the head abbot, a close friend of Augustine, dutifully returned the boy home to face the wrach of his father.

3 months later, in 1454 the greatest event occured in young Marco's life which changed him forever, a tragedy which would help set the stage for his future career. In later years, Marco would complain bitterly that god had tested him that day, and he only prayed that he had lived up to his Christ's example and suffered well.

The Years of Crisis

With the assassination of Augustine Barbango II, young Marco became the oldest living male in the family, and legal patriach. However, at just 12 years of age, Marco seemed unfit to take responcibility for the large Barbango estates and buisness affairs. His mother, as well as her many suitors, stepped in to fill the place that Augustine had left and try to control the family estates.

Unfortunatly neither Maria, nor her many suitors, where accomplished in economics, nor even the basic power politics of the Venetian Republic. In just four years time the vast wealth accumulated by the Barbango family was gone, as was a a majority of its political influence and power. The vast family estates where sold to distant relatives, and Marco found himself a member of the lower classes for the first time in his life.

These years affected him more deeply than any other in his life. Although the Barbango family was not poor, it was the closest to poverty that Marco, or his siblings, would ever come, and the threat of poverty can soemtimes be even worse than the real thing. In Marco, the heir who wished to be a priest, it created a connection with the lower classes of Venice which few could understand.

Driven by religious devotion as well as a, precieved, common affliction, Marco began to work closely with the poor and develope close ties with members of the church. It was during this time when he began to beleive that "all suffering in the world comes at the hands of the rich" and that "in order to enter god's kingdom, we must first try to make this world like heaven".

As the stories go, Barbango became determiend to right the wrongs of the world, and reform the vast Venetian Republic into something that was much more aligned to his vision of the universe. With these noble goals in mind he netered into the miltiary and later politics.

It is jsut as likely that, upon reaching maturity, Barbango was driven, also, by the desire to live up to his father's memory and to return his family to the position of pweor and influence which they had once enjoyed.

For what ever reason, in 1459, at the age of 19, Marco Barbango entered into the service of the Venetian military. The long road to the Dogeship had begun.

------------------------

I hope you guys don't mind, I have a really short reign and so, rather than post a boring little peice about my riegn, I'm trying to strech it out and explain the history of my Doge :p
