CK inhabits that land of strategy role playing games that few companies explore but which when pulled off right are games you always come back to. The closest thing to it in terms of experience for me was X-com when I started putting all the rookies up front so the soldiers I liked wouldn't get killed.

What I love about it is that you can build a powerful country under a dynamic ruler and then just have the whole thing fall apart, but still be there in a far flung dukedom to rebuild your dynasty.

I hope Rome gives the same. If anything it looks like it could be an EU/CK hybrid.

It will be money well spent. The roleplay aspect is just incredible.

It is one of the things I am really looking forward to about Rome.

Quite some time ago. Look in the Johan quote repository, it is somewhere in the first dozen.

according to Johan, there won't be any more history(apart from the starting day) in any of paradox's games.
No more historicaly forced events is probably more precise. Historical possibilities remain (forming the UK, Italia, etc).

Leaving us only with random, non-contextual events which I frankly hate. If they must remove historical events, I wish they'd just remove then entirely, and instead make the things these events were made to represent regular game features.

Well not really. The idea was that the events would be contextual, hence the better trigger scripting, and at the very least the events that comes with vanilla aren't horrendously random.

@Knight Richard - It's not no more history of course, but no more strict historical events, at least none written by Paradox. You could bring up the argument about whether Paradox should be the ones creating the more historically defined events or should it be left for modders to muck about with it, but that gets nowhere IMHO.

cheers

I for one am glad, I just finished a game as the Two Sicilies on Vicky, one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. Bloody Sardinia Piedmont has an easy time uniting the North of Italy with the support of France, while I, incidentally France's best buddy has to fight off an invasion from Sardinia Piedmont and France, I own Rome for petes sake, I should be uniting Italy! The historical events led to a ton of completely non-contextual wars, Germany managed to form in 1870 and get Alsace Lorraine off of the French as a reward for simply declaring war, it doesn't matter that their armies were losing the battles.

Just a few of the silly examples that Stiff historical events have given me.

Now try playing as a progressive, wealthy Mexico.

Then try playing as a progressive, liberal, secular Ottoman (constitutional) Empire.

Then never, ever play Vicky again.

While I never, ever would challenge the divine wisdom of OHGamer (having OT experience and knowing that you'll cite obscure books which you have likely read, absorbed, and love :D ), I'll just wait for Vicky2, which with contextual events would give me orgasms... as my American Empire conquers the Americas.

Seriously, this game looks bad. Not graphics, there great, but the very short gameplay, smaller map, no historcal events...What i'm trying to say is that the EU series should improve over time, not get worst or stay the same. Im dissatisfied.

They represent regular features, thought needing to be triggered. And events in EU:III are contextual. Therefore what Johan said means basically that there will be no more hard-coded event which fire at a certain point of time no-matter-what. Now event are supposed to fire only when they make (at least some) sense. Isn't that an improvement :p ?

Crusader Kings is a good game, but has a lot of bugs. If Paradox can't even get that right after all this time(Deus Vult just added a bunch more bugs), I'm not convinced Rome is going to be a very good game. I probably won't buy it until I can read some reviews. I'm simply disappointed with Paradox as of late.
