I thought I'd try this 2 Skull Assassination mission before I get back to the story, and it's insane. WAY out numbered by escort mechs in between me and the target. This is my 3rd reload to attempt it, and now and it keeps getting harder. Instead of a bunch of battlemechs and some tanks, this time it's ALL battlemechs. They are mostly lights, so I'm killing most of them, but I've already lost a mechwarrior, and I haven't even got to the Heavy Mech Target I have to kill.

Honestly, That'd be a benefit for me. I love salvaging mechs over tanks. That said, no, I do not believe it does.

No it does not punish save-scumming.

It does, however, randomise the opfor each time you reload. It might also increase or decrease the difficulty of the mission (so a 2-skull mission might actually be 1.5 skulls or 2.5 skulls), because that's part of the "intel is not perfect" random variation in missions.

I'm pretty sure it does.

I don't think of myself as a high-intensity save-scummer, but I have discovered something due to an extremis situaion.

The Save Scum Punishment:

If you restart the "Clash of the Titans" mission twice, you get all Victors.

Victors - the 80 ton worst Assault Mech.

----

Personal story:

I don't play Iron Man. I do, however, accept the bad outcomes 98% of the time. This was my 2%...

I started a new Career. When I arrived in my second system I found an LB X-20 and an LBX-10 in the store. In my mission que was "Clash of the Titans".

The LBX-20 fit nicely on a Victor (my heaviest mech..) I had to make very few design tradeoffs; To get jump jets I had to sacrifice all the armor on one leg for instance.

The LBX-10, on the other hand, fit only on my Phoenix Hawk. With jump jets and 2 tons of ammo I had like 1 ton to spend on armor. This is utterly terrifying! I usually play fully armored units. So I took the field with tiny scraps of armor only around my internals.

I'm mentally psyching myself up for a learning experience. I'm a terrible player objectively; I rely way too heavily on my armor and undergun my mechs. So this was going to be an exercise! I'd have to truly play strategically. There was a good chance I'd lose my mech with one stray shot from... whatever spawned.

A Locust appeared first. Alone. I sent my 2 non-LBX mechs to squash it while my Phoenix Hawk ran away to the woods and turned its back to protect its head.

Nope.

Damned locust survived 2 alpha strikes from my Crowd Controller laserboats. Armless, it ran around me into the woods to shoot my front.

It hit the head. Because of course it did.

Boom goes the Phoenix Hawk.

I'd lost my chance to practice proper run-and-gun to a locust! Then the daddy mech - an Atlas - appeared.

#!*?!

Reluctantly I did what I never do.... I reset the game.

Next game I got a dumb King Crab. I like playing with King Crabs and all, but it provided no challenge at all. 2-3 alpha strikes and it went down.... still no practice! So I reset the game a second time.

Both were Victors. This is crap. Too easy. I want my set-piece battle! At this point the career is trashed in my mind. It is tainted by the Groundhog Day resets. I will be starting over, but not until I get the experience I want...

Reset. 2 Victors.

Reset. 2 Victors.

Reload from an earlier save. 2 Victors.

Reload from a yet earlier save. 2 Victors.

Reset. 2 Victors.

Reset. 2 Victors.

Exit the game entirely. Restart my computer. Reload from an earlier save. 2 Victors.

I reset.

The next time I encountered Clash of the Titans I was curious whether it was a freak statistical accident so I tried again. Same result. Good mechs the first 2 times, all Victors thereafter.

---

Moral of the story: Don't save-scum to get big mechs on Clash of the Titans.

Moral of the story #2: Locusts are not to be ignored!

Greetings,
As previously stated in a
two year old thread. No, the game does not [intentionally] punish save scumming. What happens is whenever a roll in question occurs it gets re-rolled. Oftentimes when players thing they are being punished what happened is they got the very rare roll, and then afterwards keep getting the more common roll chances. That's it.

Otherwise, please in the future leave old threads be as they are usually out of date compared to more recent threads. Create a new thread if you don't find one more recent than a couple months from the current date.

Thank you
Timaeus
