SO, going into this threat I'm going to put it out there that I have all the mods (Skins only up to the old gods) up to WoL. Been playing since OG releases, and I've kind of noticed this with the last two releases of the game, but I'm just curious if this game completely dominates their computer CPU usage?

When I first started playing this game, I could play music, browse the web, watch youtube, ect. Then, after awhile it started becoming more and more dominant until it eventually became the ONLY thing I could run on that laptop, but I figured I'd give that too the age of the laptop, and the physical abuse it's gained over the years.

But here's the thing, I just got a gaming PC this month. Brand new, beautiful, and has the newest of everything (As of March 3rd), yet, when I play this game, unlike the rest (All my other games play fine, except internet heavy ones, but that's b/c my internet) Crusader kings 2, especially the mods (Goes without saying) really seems to just CRIPPLE my computer now...

Don't know if this is the case for everyone, but is there any way to decrease the stress it puts on my machines, or is this going to be a game that gets so much DLC and rework till I have to abandon it unless I feel like donating the entirety of what I'm doing to it.

Anyway, just curious if anyone else has this problem, if it's a known issues/under work, or if anyone has any idea's as to how I could make the whole experience smoother and less painful.

This game doesn't have the best optimization for newer pcs. I have an older PC so obviously I see very slow gameplay but many players with decent newer pcs have a similar experience to yours.

If you roll back to the early betas the game is much faster. Basically the dlcs have slowed the game down. It is what it is. Features and map expansion vs speed.

You could try turning off trees or trying the flat water and plain map mods. Seems to give some extra fps.

The gameplay itself is fast, though sometimes I do have large periods of event quietness, so I let it play in the background and check up on it awhile. I've played over 1800hrs in game, so I'm not as Diligent a player as I used to be. My problem is that the game seems to make using my computer in any other fashion nigh impossible while it's playing. (No music, no work, no internet, ect.)

that's why I'm trying to make it less crazy on my computer, if possible. Not ideal or planned by the dev team that I'd be using it as a background game I'm sure, but the fact it just completely warps the realities that make up my computer to make Crusader Kings 2 the only working thing while it's playing is a little.... well... a little strange.

The problem with going back to previous beta's is that I can't use the stuff that still makes this game fresh and new. I'm not as enraptured as I once was by the game, but the fact I still can get new things out of it is what keeps me playing. lol

I suppose I'm just a grizzled old king who misses the golden age of the CK2/computer usability.

I completely understand. I feel the same way. I play with the dlcs and slower speed.

I can multitask just fine on a computer I got last November and I have all the DLC up to and including Rajas of India. But I'm running it on Linux.

The AMD processor is a big part of your problem. AMD chips don't have as good single-core performance as Intel chips, and that's what's important for CK2, which hardly takes any advantage of multiple cores.

I'm running the 8-core 8320, same single core speed as you but I'm not noticing so much slowdown in vanilla with dlcs.

Try finding the dont_track_data= line in your settings and making it
Code:
dont_track_data=yes
Just to make sure the data tracking isn't slowing you down if you enabled it. Probably won't make much difference but there were issues with it previously.

I don't think this is true, I had the same processor as him before and upgraded to 4790k and it's still have slow down issue. It might be because i like to play at speed 5 but if you expecting a smoother experience, I doubt you will get one. I also upgraded my ram from 8 to 16. I think the problem is the game engine itself, granted i never play single player on speed 4 or lower.

Runs pretty good on a Skylake i3 with 2133 memory I put together on a budget. I don't have any extra programs running though, except the occasional steam and a browser usually pointed at youtu.be.

I'm not massively tech savy, so I'll just say this is my spec:

CPU Type: Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.00GHz
Motherboard: Z97-PRO GAMER
Memory: 16GB Corsair DDR3 SDRAM
Videocard: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
Hard Drive: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB (250GB)

Its all overclocked as well.

The PC barely even notices the game is running when at speed 5. A month slows down by about 1 second after 100 years of playing, and 1.5 seconds after 200ish years, then levels out. So at the start, on speed 5, it takes 3 seconds per month, and by the end it takes 5ish seconds. That's with all DLC active. Despite the evident limitations of the game engine, it certainly can be overcome with the right PC!

Compared to the 23 second month average on speed 5 from my old PC, this is now my CK2 golden age.
