It's not ended if you only destroy the awakened empire, it's ended when you destroy the whole league. Not necessarily a bug to me, but truly very hard to achieve. It's like you need to conquer half of the galaxy (with your useless allies).

If you joined one side, what's worse is to ask for independence after the war... You need to fight your own league which has already conquered the entire galaxy. Colossus will be necessary to earn war credits.

Yeah, I'd have to call that a bug. It wasn't the case before, and it was never mentioned in the patch notes so it probably wasn't intended. It doesn't make logicl sense either the rest of the league has no reason to keep fighting if they're not being forced to by their master anymore.

That's a shame, maybe I'll have to wait before continuing this game.

I see. It's a shame that game mechanics changed silently with the updates. It's even worse if not intended.

I don't think it is intended, the WIH mechanics are messed up from start to finish. From the way you automatically annex everything you touch, resulting in insane sprawl and micro (reckon you can manage half a galaxy worth of planets?) to the way it forces you to not only defeat one or two FEs you then have to fight everyone who wasn't allied with you in your fight AFTER the opposing FE(s) are defeated.

In my last game i chose a side and was able to rip into and take over the opposing FE relatively quickly, nearly crashing my economy while also fighting a robot rebellion ( Did I miss the patch note where all robots/droids/synths are created equal and even a toyota welding bot can rebel?) with the most anticlimactic conclusion ever. For some reason the OPFOR felt like they should just keep fighting.. to the death, and the state of the AI being what it is, it would be me who'd have to take over every. single. system. and. planet. At this point the unbidden invaded and I just.. gave up.

Once the faction leader in the WIH is defeated the war should end with various effects/rules depending on if you lost, won or kept out of it and just survived.

Well I seem to recall that the War in Heaven is supposed to be long and drawn out. If you side with one of the AEs, you have to defeat the opposing AE and the League. Likewise, if you join the League, you have to defeat both AEs. In a big galaxy, this can take quite some time. I don't think 2.2 changed the way it's supposed to work. If there's a functional difference between now and 2.1, it's probably a bug.

At this point the unbidden invaded and I just.. gave up.

Once the faction leader in the WIH is defeated the war should end with various effects/rules depending on if you lost, won or kept out of it and just survived.

This just happened to me, as well. WIH triggered, I joined a side. Almost immediately I had a robot rebellion. First I defeated that, then I just slowly moved around the galaxy for 50 years conquering everything in sight. I now have ~700 systems, ~200 planets, and 13000 pops. Which is cool, sort of... but it was a colossal pain in the arse to have to fully eliminate everyone.

Two things to add to this:
  1. When I check the overall scores for who's winning the game, it still says it's not possible to win. Even though I fully conquered both the opposing Awakened and its allies, and the League. So I don't think WIH has actually ended on the back-end. (I'm still a satellite of the winning AE, though, so maybe that's why?)
  2. Because you have to conquer the entirety of both opposing factions, I invaded a lotttttt of planets. And because of how war exhaustion is calculated in total wars, at the end of the wars WHERE I COMPLETELY ELIMINATED ENTIRE EMPIRES, my exhaustion was somehow higher. It's because my invading armies died and the defenders did not. So I literally could have lost the game to the last planet standing if my exhaustion had grown faster than my ability to fully conquer everyone. This does not seem like how it should work.
