For example, in Tura, the native population before colonization is Tengri and Uralic. Does this affect the game in any way or is it just window dressing?
I guess I'll try to confirm that next time I colonize something in a non-trade zone province-would that be the only thing? I sort of think there ought to be an option to colonize more quickly or efficiently if you leave the original culture/religion intact. You can always return a province to its original culture, and it's much cheaper than most culture conversions. Presumably this applies to colonized provinces as well.

Nope.
I've tried, believe me, I've tried. Precolonial religion and culture do absolutely nothing outside of the special company regions that retain them. The best luck I've gotten out of it is converting to Taino culture as Arawak by migrating, but actual colonization wipes the province history and makes it unavailable to be flipped again.
Sorry, what do you mean by "wiping the province history"? I checked - when tribe migrating to province without their culture, they can convert their province to original one.The best luck I've gotten out of it is converting to Taino culture as Arawak by migrating, but actual colonization wipes the province history and makes it unavailable to be flipped again.
I think he means that colonizing a province (not migrating to it) changes the province culture so that you can't revert culture using advanced culture change (like you can with regular provinces). So for example, you can change the province culture of Constantinople back to Greek if you conquer it from the Ottomans because its culture in 1444 is Greek, but you can't change a colonized Manhattan back to Delaware culture. (I haven't confirmed this myself, but it's what I believe Karlingid is saying.)Sorry, what do you mean by "wiping the province history"? Interesting.you can't change a colonized Manhattan back to Delaware culture.
Interesting.
Looks like it's true for colonizing by colonial nations (at least I couldn't change culture just now), but not true with migrating at least. I believe it worth checking.
