So, I've only just bought HoI and decided that as a learning experience I will try playing in Asia around China. To that end the only DLC I bought is Waking the Tiger. I chose Manchukuo as my starting nation for a try out game. I read about the strategy and so on and I read about the Japanese subject system among other things.

But something seems to be wrong here. I do not start the game as Imperial Protectorate, as advertised, but as a Puppet, although the next level is correct. I tried starting as Japan to test things, waiting for the subjects to become Imperial Associates and then demoting them and again, no Imperial Protectorates, but Puppets instead. What is going on?

Also, for some reason Japan seems hell bent on lowering the autonomy as soon as I raise it.

I think the game might be having autonomy conflicts considering you don't have Together for Victory (the Commonwealth DLC which improved the puppet system) and has resulted in some conflicts there? This is actually really odd considering the Japanese history file should work, as seen below, if you just have WTT.

After launching the game with just WTT enabled I got the same thing, might be worth making a bug report because I don't think that should be happening lol

Also, at least with all the expansions, isn't Manchukuo's autonomy/subject level supposed to be handled by their focus tree instead of manually? I believe they can't actually go independent the old-fashioned way.

I thought getting Together for Victory might solve the problem, but things are now even worse.
The next level is now Colony instead of Imperial Associate.

I dont know if it makes sense to fork out even more money for Deah or Dishonor (maybe the system only works properly with all DLC) or just give up, disable Together for Victory and live with the initial problem.

If you're on steam I would try verifying the game cache to see if anything's missing, it really doesn't make sense to me that's it's broken as it is and worse comes to worst, make a bug thread cause it shouldn't be happening. Also TfV and WtT are the only dlcs which touch autonomy so you shouldn't need any others

I did check, everythhing was fine. I eventually ended up buying Death or Dishonor (although I felt kind of stupid buying more things in hope that the game would work as advertised) and that fixed the problem.
So it turns out that it works only if one owns every DLC with subject features.
Hopefuly the game will turn out to be worth it.

Manchukou has a unique subject level that it cannot get out of, unless one pick the apropriate focus on their focus three, the unique japans subject types work fine thouguh

That's some spaghetti code on Paradox's part if DoD is required to fix the starting subjects of Japan lmao, glad you got it working though man :)
