So, I've only just bought HoI and decided that as a learning experience I will try playing in Asia around China. To that end the only DLC I bought is Waking the Tiger. I chose Manchukuo as my starting nation for a try out game. I read about the strategy and so on and I read about the Japanese subject system among other things.
But something seems to be wrong here. I do not start the game as Imperial Protectorate, as advertised, but as a Puppet, although the next level is correct. I tried starting as Japan to test things, waiting for the subjects to become Imperial Associates and then demoting them and again, no Imperial Protectorates, but Puppets instead. What is going on?
Also, for some reason Japan seems hell bent on lowering the autonomy as soon as I raise it.
