does the gameplay camera angle always stay the same distance away even when battles are going on or does it zoom in so you have a closer view like in age of empires or something?

thanks
There are three different zoom levels. If you have zoomed in to the third level, you cannot zoom in any further.

For the most part, EU2 is a strategy game (as opposed to Age of Empires, which is almost more of a tactical game), so the battles themselves are not generally considered as important as other aspects of the gameplay.

You can zoom in or out at any time using the plus and minus keys on your keypad.

There IS an option to have a message pop up to tell you a battle is going on, with a "go to" option... works kinda like the notification of disasters in SimCity (if you are familiar with that), although the gameplay is not affected as much.

Just like to add that in my (and maybe others( case the + and - are for speed and to zoom in/out I must use "ctrl -" or "ctrl +".

You can't zoom in on battles at all. All you see are a few little men fighting representing each army.
You can see the battle in the left-hand window area if you click on some of your men fighting in the battle. That lets you see the morale and numbers of your men on a day-by-day basis throughout the battle.

The answer to your question is that it never looks like Age of Empires or even Total War. It is solely a strategic game.
