Watching the WWW streams it appears that when planning an offensive only one objective can be given (move to this new line and go via this route shown by the arrow). I might be mistaken, but I would like to see the ability to design a complete campaign plan from day one, designing not just one line to move to but arrows branching of that to further lines (something like the image below). Anyway if this is already the case could someone confirm?

Isn't a too detailed plan problematic though? I think there is some clever saying about how all plans are out the window at first contact with the enemy. Can't remember who said it, but it does hold some truth to it I believe.

A large scale invasion is bound to encounter unexpected obstacles

Well, yes and no. In real life going into war without having a pretty exact plan (on a grand scale, that is) is risky business. The more intricately you plan the better, on the surface, but one needs to of course balance that with the expectation that some plans will fly out of the window and so forth.

In the game a plan too large or deep is a bad idea as planning bonus is lost as troops advance (as some plans fly out of the window). In a multi-stage plan I believe the troops stop to rest, recuperate and plan the next offensive when a stage is completed, replenishing their planning bonus. So an intricate plan is fine as long as it is multi-staged.

I have definitely seen multi-stage battleplans, but im not sure about the details.

But for whatever reason Daniel never uses multistage, only single stage and then redoes it as he gets close to his objective.

Would be nice that naval invasions were multi stage as well (land and then progression on land).
Yes, that's possible too.

It is not his playstyle. He himself said, that he draws a single big line and then micros his troops, when he sees a possibility.

Im wondering if its because the AI isnt programmed very well yet.

Not to take anything away from him, but the micro orders he usually does are obvious orders that a well programmed AI should have done. Just basically telling the troop to take open territory that is undefended, make an attack that is an easy overrun, or cut the one province supply line of an enemy breakthrough that the AI should have never done.
