Does the base size of the planet matter for Ecumenopolis?

So does it matter if I choose a size 12 or a size 25 planet for my Ecumenopolis? Will the max districts be affected or is it always 25?

Yes, planet size matters.

But since the base habitability does not, nothing stops you from turning a 25 tile tomb world directly into an ecumenopolis. :)

Personally I think you're better off with two small/medium planets turned into ecuno rather than large one. The best use of ecuno is to make consumer good and alloy, since the district don't use special resource. Even large empire will have enough of one medium ecuno to do all there alloy/CG production and by using two medium planet you can specialize them (5% on your entire production is pretty nice).

I tend to prefer using smaller worlds, because they fill up with districts faster, and therefore unlock the Arcology decision faster.

I have a size 18 eco world and I don’t see myself filling it up completely, like, ever. The sheer size of the districts just allow the population to get absolutely enormous.

I've filled up Fen Habbanis without too much difficulty.

Judicious use of resettlement is your friend in this situation. Are you unemployed?

Maximum number of districts is the same as for a normal planet. It's fine to turn a small or large planet into an Ecumenopolis, they'll all fill up eventually. The main things to pay attention to are how safe the planet is (relative location in your empire) and many resource districts you are giving up: the ideal candidate is a resource-poor planet deep inside your empire, close to the capital (so trade protection is not a problem).

Also, Mastery of Nature still works on Ecumenopolises. If you're going to do both, it's better to do Arcology first, then Mastery of Nature, so you don't spend as much time churning out city districts in preparation for the Arcology decision (also, initially you won't need those extra districts).

You know, I wouldn't mind Mastery of Nature being a pre-requisite for the Arcology Project perk, and the arcology decision requiring Mastery of Nature to have been enacted on the planet. It makes perfect sense thematically, and it makes zero sense that Mastery of Nature can be enacted AFTER you already have a city planet. In fact I find this rather gamey since it alloys you to skip making more city districts.

Ecumenopoli are also way, WAY too strong and easily rushable right now. I think this would be a suitable nerf in the right direction that doesn't actually make them worse, which would just make people never use them.

As for Fen Habanis... they really ought to make you require Zero-G Engineering to colonize or "fix" it. After all, you need Mega-Engineering to colonize the ringworld precursors, and why a city planet unhabited for millions of years is in pristine condition is beyond me.

BTW, crappy small tile worlds are what you want for your ecumenopolis. They are so dense that you will hit the building slot limit no matter what, and the bigger the planet is, the longer it will take to build up, and more costly it will be to make all those city districts.

I always build mine on 21+ size planets and make them research and alloy foundries (three enterteinament districts and enough housing district for the research buildings -6 or 7- and the rest all on alloy). After you "terraform" to eucumenopolis you will always have 13 housing districts (12 + 1 from the expansion tradition tree, i think) and (Planet size - 13) of available districts. That's a guess calculation, but i always start with 13 housing districs
