  • For The Glory
Namely, inheritance laws?

Case in question: the King of Croatia has been allied to the Duke or Lombardia for a good 25 years. But the man has no living brothers, 6 daughters and 1 bastard son. So he's heirless.

After three (3!) marriages of my sons/nephews with daughters of his, one finally decided to change the usual routine of having 3 daughters and then committing suicide, and lived long enough to have a son.

But Croatia is salic. So the King's only grandson is not an heir at all.

Being that the realm has no heir at all, will the AI eventually change it's law to semisalic or elective, to solve the issue, or will it just spawn a new King out of no-where when this guy dies?

The AI will only change laws by event. Vanilla has a few law changing events, others are in mods.

See law_events.txt. Unfortunately for you the event to allow changing primogeniture to elective (or gavelkind) requires two sons, and there is no law to change away from salic to semisalic.

If you use the DVIP on Vista, you can enable the female_inheritance event file that will allow the AI to open the succession to women as well if he has no heirs (functions like semisalic otherwise).

I do have DVIP on Vista (why is it different from XP?) but ain't that... well, cheating and rather a-historical?

And what will happen when the current King dies then, assuming I don't change anything?

Not at all... it is closer to the actual default law in Europe than semi-salic consanguity actually. Women inherited titles, it's just that when they married (often arranged or forced) their titles usually fell to their husband. But there were many female rulers.

The event is coded to only fire when a ruler is heirless.

As for Vista -- I have heard from many people that the law changing event will cause an instant crash on XP, but it works just fine on Vista. CK on Vista is better with dealing with crashes apparently.

And what will happen when the current King dies then, assuming I don't change anything?
His oldest living daughter will inherit. So it won't help you directly I guess.

If you like, I can code an event that will allow the AI to change from salic to semisalic if he has no heirs, but that's a little against the entire idea behind salic law isn't it? The entire thought behind salic law is to keep females and female descendants out.

Indeed. So I'll just let him go heirless. My only question is how the game will solve the issue as it is. Without changing the game to allow female inheritance or moding/eventing it out, I mean. Heirless death = random generated king?

I saw Germany going Gavelkind once, and distributing his king titles (GERM + BURG + ITAL + BOHE) among his four sons. Europe looked like someone puked all over it... :eek:o

That sounds wonderful...wish it could happen in my game. Be easier to break the HRE...:D

So it was just random bad luck that the Byzantine emperor switched away from Elective law when my character was in line to inherit?
