I believe this question has been asked before, but feel like it wasn't answered or was unclear. To be even more specific - if I research 1941 tanks, will the upgrade costs of a L.Arm III (1939) to Arm III (1939) be halved?

No.

It would not be halved, because upgrading to obsolete models does increase daily upgrading by a factor of 4 at same ic. LArm1939 however does not become obsolete till Arm1943 because both have the same speed of 15.

To confirm it i ran a little test and used the console to give me the needed techs:

tech 2040: LArm1938
tech 2050: LArm1939
tech 2070: Arm1939
tech 2080: Arm1941
tech 2090: Arm1943
tech 2140: Arm1945
tech 11000: Arm1947
tech 11010: Arm1951
tech 2550: Arm1954

I used the start of the GC1936 as Germany and disbanded all military short of one HQ(upgrading deactivated) and one LArm1936.

With tech 2040 the ic needed for upgrading is 7.28, daily progress is 2.41%. The later is 100%/(112 days x 0.9 x 0.5)xESE^2

The 0.9 are from \db\misc.txt, the 0.5 are from the unit file \db\units\divions\light_armor.txt. The 112 days are the production time of LArm1938 as can be read in the production menu. The ESE is the ESE of the province(110.25%), not the one of the unit because the later is influenced by the HQ i kept for just that purpose.

The 7.28 ic are 11.986 ic x 0.5 x 1.0 x ESE^2. The 0.5 are from \db\misc.txt, the 1.0 are from the unit file \db\units\divisions\light_armor.txt. The 11.986 ic are the the production cost of Larm1938 as can be read in the production menu, at least except some of the later digits.

With tech 2050 the daily progress is quadrupled to 9.65%, needed ic remains at 7.28.

Adding the techs 2070 and 2080 does not change the picture. Adding tech 2090 does. Now daily progress drops back to 2.41%. That i did not expect.

For the upgrade LArm1938 to LArm1939 everything follows the known pattern. Production time is 123 days, production cost is 12.708 ic. Upgrading ic is 7.72, daily progress is 2.20%. Adding any of the techs 2070 to 2090 changes nothing about that.

Now lets get to upgrading LArm1939 to Arm1939. Daily progress is 2.02%, 9.13 ic are neded. That fits the known pattern. Arm1939 needs 15.018 ic over 134 days. Adding tech 2080 changes nothing and adding tech 2090 changes nothing either.

Upgrading LArm1939 to Arm1939 does not depend on later techs.

Upgrading Arm1939 to Arm941 with tech 2090 costs 10 ic with daily progress of 8.09%. With another level of obsolescence this changes to 18.2%. Another level of obsolescence changes it to 32.36%.

Compared to the 2.02% of simple obsolescence those a factors of 4, 9 and 16. So those are 2^2, 3^2 an 4^2. The next level of obsolescence should give a factor of 5^2=25.

Attached is the savegame from 1.11 set 17 that i used for my tests.

FYI, the answer Mr_BOnarpte asked is still unclear given your attempt to over answer. It's a pretty simple question which you answered as "no" because upgrading from obsolete models is 4x... but then conclude with admitting that the model in question is not obsolete until two years later than the scenario under question. How convoluted can you get?

I have an excellent idea. I will soon be upgrading my Lt-ARM-3 (1939) to ARM-3 (1939) and will make a complete, simple and succinct report that has an answer everybody can easily find.

UPDATE: Decided to delay upgrading the fast LtATM-3 which does 15kph until the ARM model is achieved that has same speed.

Can L.Arm-3 upgrade to Arm-2?
