I'd like to know if HOI4 uses the same game engine as HOI3 tfh and whether it uses a 32 bit exe or 64 bit exe file to start the game (and access the necessary RAM to play HOI4 with limited to no crashing/CTD issues).

In mid-game (say 1943) how much RAM is HOI4 using?

I'm asking because the latest exe for HOI3 tfh is a 32 bit exe that gives us access to about 3.5 GB of the RAM we have installed. It is my understanding that a 64 bit exe file will give access to at least 8 GB of RAM.

I anticipate that any DLC released to augment our HOI4 game experience will increase the RAM needed to play and thought it would be good to know whether or not HOI4 intends to take advantage of system resources beyond 4 GB of RAM.

Thank You!

Pretty sure its 32 bit because many people are idiots and still run 32 bit :(
I wouldnt call a tiny percentage many, but yes. There are still people that are using 32bit and podcat said they dont want to exclude anyone with making it 64bit without any real benefit from it. (His words not mine)
We dont have a 64bit build no. Still quite a lot of people on 32bit only and we dont want to leave them behind (wtf are you ppl doing?).

I am really wondering how many of those few percent are actually aware that they run 32bit or even know that 64bit exist. They probably dont even know that they can install 64bit with their windows license.

If you take a look at the steam hardware info (currenctly down, because steam) you can see that the 32bit share is tiny and on an downwards trend. Those numbers are from december tho, since valve currently needs to fix the aftermath of their giant screwup.

Yeah, but still. They can easiely switch to 64bit for free. Nobody gets excluded there. If they have an Mac or Linux PC however, they have to buy an windows licence if they opt with an windows only game.

People dont realize that it is wrong that with 32bit you can only access 4gb of ram. That 4gb limit is for user addressable memory in total and videocard memory does count towards that limit aswell. Not on an 1:1 ration, tho. So having an 4gb videocard and 4gb of ram actually does mean that you cant even access the whole 4gb of ram.

It is an miracle that microsoft released an 32bit version of Windows 10 in the first place.

Ha. I'm in the 0.18% using vista 64bit. Not for long though as I'm building a new pc this year. Its amazing that I built this computer about 6 years back and even then I knew to avoid 32bit.

It`s strange, that they don`t share your view that consumers should "just switch", or is it not? ;)

Well I would never call 12% a tiny percentage... pretty significant considering Grand strategy players will probably be on average with older/lower end HW compared to AAA titles players.

you cant leave someone behind that can simply and easiely upgrade for free to 64bit. It is ironical that M$ states that they dont let customers behind when just a few months earlier they decided to make directX 12 windows 10 exclusive.

There are sadly a ton of people out there that arent even aware of 32bit and 64bit. I know countless of people that run an 32bit system while having 8GB or more Ram installed.

If i make an game and make it 64bit only, i dont exclude anybody since anyone has access to 64bit versions of windows that has an windows licence. If i make it directX12 exclusive however, i lock out everyone without an dx12 compatible videocard and without windows 10.

It`s not. They want people to migrate to new softwere, which, makes them want new software be as compatible with old hardware as possible. All logical.

Most of the hardware that doesnt support 64bit probably already broke down and wouldnt be compatible with modern operating systems anyway since they are simply to slow. The first 64bit desktop processor was release 13 years ago by AMD.

Anyway, we are offrailing a bit from the original topic anyway, so we probably should end the discussion there. Let's agree on that there might be some good reason for still making 32bit a thing even if it hinders progress.

They run (extremly slightly) faster then 64bit applications if the amount of memory available is enough for 32bit. As well, executables and dlls will be minimal smaller. ;)
so you're saying that all that is achieved is a < 4% savings in disk space and roughly a 1-3% increase in speed?

and the fact that an application can be made Large Address Aware even if it is 32 bit. Yep I now see the light, HOI4 should be delayed a year or 2 while they convert the core engine to 64 bit

In all the other threads about this topic, it was said clearly that HoI4 won't ever come close to using more than 4GB of RAM and that CPU will be the most limiting factor, as in any Paradox game.

Most people are way to obsessed with RAM. You may need up to 8GB for certain games, but please tell me how its even possible to need more than that for gaming without letting a ton of programms run unnecessarily in the background.
