I was reading on another forum where someone mentioned that if you give the Captain of the Varangian Guard (or some other order you have) a barony in the capital, since they are Duke-tier they generate Research Points that will contribute to the tech of the capital. Previously I had been under the impression that you have to own a county in order to use RP's -- can anyone confirm what is correct?

I'm also wondering if that means the Ecumenical Patriarch, who has the Bishopric of Constantinople, is already contributing RP's to the province, even though he doesn't control the county. Or do I need to give him a county in order for his RP's to have someplace to go?

i think that they do contribute, landless players can contribute to their capital province even without having any land. But i am not sure if the ai is smart enghout to do it.

counts and barons can generatw techpoints too with councillor doing certain actioms

off topic, can you inherit techpoints from unlanded courtiers?

=="off topic, can you inherit techpoints from unlanded courtiers?"==

Here is how one may verify the question --
- Save the game
- Note how many tech points you currently have

- Using the Console:
1) play <vassal-char-id> (choose a one-county vassal)
2) techpoints (to ensure that he has tech points)
3) play <your-char-id>
4) give_title <tag-of-vassal's-county> <your-char-id>
5) move <vassal-char-id> (if he didn't auto-relocate to your court)
6) kill <vassal-char-id>

- Note whether you inherited his tech points
- Reload the game to undo the above

====
Edit:
At the same time, you don't inherit the prestige or piety of unlanded courtiers, so perhaps any tech point they may have also go into the bit-bucket.

Edit 2:
I got curious enough about the question to do the steps I had listed above.

Answer: an unlanded character's tech points vanish ==at the time of his death==.

To be sure, I gave the murdered count's son the county and consoled over to that character: he also did not inherit his father's tech points.

I did a second test: instead of killing the un-landed count, I gave him back the county and then consoled over to the character. He still had the tech points I had previously consoled to him.

So, any tech points previously built up by a now unlanded character persist for the life of the character.

@Illion I don't know if you were replying to my request, but I was referring to my original question, not the question on unlanded courtiers. Can someone give me a definite answer on whether barons with titular duke/king titles generate and spend RP's in the province they have a barony in?

Tech points aren't held by the provinces, they're held by characters, and they go to the characters heir same as other assets. Tech points can only be spent in a capital province. They can't spent points unless they control the county. So you can't give a mercenary, holy order, or religious head a barony to get them to spend tech points. It has to be a province.

Hmm.. Is that really true? Can't you spend tech-points as a Patrician, if you happens to get any?
