I enjoy Paradox games, but I just have the problem of not being able to keep a campaign. I dont even make it a century. Or even half a century. The Farthest I get is 1430, and then I decide to switch my team. Maybe I'm just playing boring teams? Anyone know any good ones? Does anyone have a secret for staying with a certain team? It just...it takes so long! :(

EDIT: If your going to suggest a team to play as, Im using Mymap

I usually lose interest in the middle of the 18th century...

That being said, I play on very fast, but have changed the settings, so that it stops, whenever something interesting or important happens. This way, you can easily pass the decades when you have to wait for things to happen, like when you are waiting for your BB to lower, an event to trigger, or a key-technology to be available (like exploration with all ships).

Furthermore, I usually follow other nations closely. Quite often it is more interesting for me to see how other nations are doing then myself. All that keeps my motivation up, since in order to watch empires rise and fall, you gotta stay in the game for at least a few centuries.

Another way of gaining long-term motivation is picking a country that will keep you busy for the whole time-span of the game. Russia is an example. At least in the AGC-EEP you will get new core-provinces throughout the game, and as your neighbors fortunes rise and fall, you constantly have to decide into which region to strike next: Poland-Lithuania, the steppes, Scandinavia, etc. Turkey is like that as well, though with them, you will spend the second half of the game trying to keep your empire together. But that can be fun, too.

Well, I cant play on fast, because I hate unrealisim. If I go to quick, I might not catch the A.I when it does something gay, like France annexes Whallachia, or something like that. I just tried to play Moscow, but Denmark kept jumping in and demanding Far Karelia, which again, was unrealistic. It happened like four times. I love this game because its realistic, but I hate it also because its so unrealistic.

As far as avoiding boredom goes, try playing nations where you are forced to use an unusual strategy. For instance, if you are accustomed to fighting land battles, try playing England or Portugal and building a navy---or if you are used to naval battles, try Russia.

You could also try modifying the files to create an interesting scenario. I've been thinking of playing as the Latin-tech Aztecs myself.

It can also be fun to read a book about a country, then play as that country.

I love it because it's realistic, and I love it because it's unrealistic.

My major problem with Victoria (apart from the fact that it runs so slowly) is that nothing bizarre ever happens. By contrast, in my most recent EU2 game, Venice owns Greenland, Morocco has colonized Taiwan, and Germany has been conquered by a huge Protestant Bohemia.

Yea, Im going to uninstall my Mymap. It looks pretty, but there is too many nations and provinces. I'l read up on Russia to get me pumped for it. ;) I love Victoria, those first two examples you cited about EU2, made me cringe, however the last one doesn't sound that bad/unrealistic, unhistorical sure, but plausible. I would like to see Europe all new by the end of the campaign, just not Germany being controlled by Spain, and Spain controlled by Russia, ya know?

I like it when nations don't follow their historical paths. The only time it gets annoying is with bizarre diplo annexations like France diplo annexing Lithuania.

Personally I tend to finish games in the 17th century since I dislike expanding outside of my sphere of influence. I like playing as minor states so that the first task is to gain a power base and then plenty of years are spent gradually claiming provinces of the same culture etc.

Playing on fast helps me with the boredom, and I play in 10 year sprints...both so the AI doesn't fall asleep, and that's about all I can do in one sitting before my attention lags.

I try to roleplay a little. I ask myself what makes the most sense for this monarch and this time before taking an action. That helps me get into it a bit, as does keeping an eye on other nations.

One idea I never tried is to simply SWITCH nations when you get bored... WITHIN THE SAME GAME. Set the other six 'players' to nations that'll die (like the Timurids) or you know won't interest you (like the Dakota in vanilla), freeing up the main countries. Then start with one, go for 20 or 30 years ... and if you get bored, pick one that looks like it's having an interesting time of it and help them out for awhile.

That can also deal with your dislike of 'unrealism.' If Venice ends up as Greenland - fine. Load as Denmark, DoW Venice and take the damned thing back. Your object of the game could be to keep things as historical as possible or otherwise build your own vision of what Europe could look like.

I have had this problem, I usually start about 10 campaigns out of which only one is played until the 18th century and others end in 10-15 years, the problem is finding the country that will catch your interest. I personally am not fond of majors, especially if the are colonial powers, because there is no opposition. I mean if I play as Spain then by the time England has a few colonies I will have a few continents.

So one game I always found interesting is Brandenburg. The game is always full of action, first when you try to get yourself the first couple of provinces to form a base, then as you vassalise other minors in wars against huge alliances, then as you annex them and make the world hate you, this is followed by a change to protestantism and huge turmoil, wrong reliogion provinces etc. All this time you have to juggle the evenr expanding Habsburgs and the Polish who swallow Lithuania and Hungary.

Currently playing the game as Brandenburg and I am in the middle of the 17th century, hasn't been boring yet.

Perhaps you should stop thinking of your side as a team. Imagine that it is a sovereign state whose destiny you control and will continue to do so through nearly 400 years of history. Now there's a plot to keep your interest! Avoid errors and conquer!

I was just wondering, if I was Columbus, is the A.I able to see the whole map as well? I mean, can Venice just suddenly start colonising South America, etc? Im not using this to cheat, its because for some reason whenever I download AGCEEP, certain parts of Europe are blanked out. In some cases, I cant even see some of my own provinces.

Wow! Thanks for the Attitude! :) I actually do think of my nation as a state, and I do roleplay. I just substituted the word "Kingdom" once with team, and please, dont come into my thread and foolishly attempt to convince me to change my tastes.

Moving past juvenile insults - you were asking whether others have run into a certain problem. And, please correct me if I am wrong, the problem appears to be getting bored with the game after a certain number of years. I gave you my honest advice on a state of mind that I feel is necessary to pull through all 400 years. And the aforementioned reference was made four times, not once.

It's..interesting...if you can't see your own provinces. I would call that a BUG and tell the AGCEEP folks.

Anyway no, the AI can't see your explorations. If you trade maps with them though, then naturally they'll learn what you know. I don't know if they trade with other nations (doubtful) or can steal your rutters in a naval battle / attack on the capital (probable).

Well, has anybody ever done a Ultra-Campaign from CK to HoI 2: DD? That'd be a blast.

I'm in the process. It's hard. After a while, even if you play conversatively (or like, play bad enough to get beat by the AI sometimes), you just get sick of playing the same country again and again and again...

It stinks dude... By the time i end CK there is no independent Kingdom left in Europe so there is no point to go to eu2 just to dip annex about a thousand of vassals. And by the time you finish eu2/victoria there is nothing that can really bare your way in hoi2. Perhaps China and Japan (since i think no one annexes em in eu2), but thats all (maybe Russia if you do not claim all that area in CK, but sometimes the Russian AI in eu2 screws things up anyway).

I tried doing one of these wierdo campaigns in CK, started as one province county, Bradenburg iirc. Already am King of Bohemia, Germany, Poland, Italy and another thousand places that were Pagan/Muslim, and it is still 1120-1150 or such.

That being said, i also loose interest in eu2 after 1700 or such. By then, i have beaten all of europe, or my MI is nearly 2000.
