I added my own flag, no other edits to the files or anything like that and I'm curious if that will remove my ability to obtain achievements..
The data is conflicting in that regard. I think even graphical additions break archievements. Somebody else reporte otherwise.
What should break archievements is any addition of a namelist.

I use a mod that adds symbols to be used in flags and can get achievements fine, I also use another mod to increase the number of colors available for empires and it's the same. BUT, I've read in steam mods comments sections that other, also only graphical, mods are not achievement compatible.

This is the checksum_manifest.txt:
Code:
directory
name = common
sub_directories = yes
file_extension = .txt

directory
name = common
sub_directories = yes
file_extension = .lua

directory
name = common
sub_directories = yes
file_extension = .csv

directory
name = events
sub_directories = yes
file_extension = .txt

directory
name = map
sub_directories = yes
file_extension = .lua
Common has the most important subfolders and the most watched over filetypes.
But just because you keep out of those, does not guarantee you getting archeivements.

Any mods disable ironman mode.

In a sense of registering for the achievements or as in not allowing one to start a game in ironman? I've played several games with at least a Flags and Emblems mod combined with a Color mod and ironman works fine. Granted I don't play ironman often and the last time I got an achievement was a while ago.

You can always enable Ironman mode.
For archievements you need Iron Man and a valid checksum. Either alone is not enough.

Moments ago I unlocked an achievement using my flag, but I didn't add it as you would a normal mod, I simply just made an 11th pirate flag and added the 3 flag images into the game itself and was able to get achievements

Steam should notice those extra files on the next Update or Verify pass and "fix" the Installation by removing them. It is both the most reliable way to do that, and the dumbest thing to do and what I would do ;)
That is a reasion there is a dedicated modding support wich works by the game loading modfiles from another diretory instead of game files.

It is also a very interesting find. Thanks.
