I played EU1 and thought it was the best game I ever played. And as EU2 came so soon after EU1 I resisted a tiny bit in getting EU2 because like yourself I never found sequels all that much better than the original. BOY was I wrong.

EU2 was a vast improvement over the first game. Everything that the first game lacked, missionaries, being able to annex the capital of major nations, lack of events were all addressed in EU2.

Then came EU3, It took the rigid railroading of EU2 and open things up to limit possibilities. EU3 was a vastly superior game to EU2. I will never forget my first game with EU3. It was a demo copy and I played as England I had just finished a successful war with France and Scotland 4 years earlier mainly surviving because of my navy to suddenly see France inherit Scotland and ferry over huge army stacks to Scotland. I couldn't afford the -5 stability hit to declare war to stop the Ai in the channel. So I had to watch my doom in slow motion. Needless to say France declared war as soon as the treaty expired and I was fighting for my life. I can't tell you what happen because the demo only went a certain amount of time and then stopped. I was so shocked with this dynamic yet plausible event it still ranks as one of my best EU3 experiences.

I haven't seen all that much of EU4 game play beyond Quill and a few live streams but from what I have seen it appears far superior to EU3. I can't say it is 100% going to be better because I haven't played it but If I was a betting man I'd bet on EU4 being a vastly superior game to EU3.

It may or may not surpass in terms of game-play and/or gfx, but a quick call-out for EU2 with its hours of original, brilliant, period music. Yes, even 'Falalalera' or whatever the heck that thing was, counts.

Happy Days.

I have to say the old days were cool, and the music of EU (the first one), was amazing ! Such a pleasure to hear it, I still have it in my head. Oh... Wait a minute !

Of course EU4 will be a better game, which is something I can say with certainty from the previews. Something like HOI3 was definitely not at release, but EU4 will be. The real question is, will it be better as an isolated experience? For instance, WarCraft III is a better game than its predecessors, but WarCraft II was hands down the most enjoyable experience in the series for its time. We shall see for Europa.

Previous Paradox record, as isolated experiences:

HOI3 > HOI2? = Negative.
CK2 > CK1? = Affirmative.
Vic2 > Vic1? = Push.

I like it mostly how there is always something to do. You can wait and spend your points on stabilizing your country, or you can keep creating some claims and have continuous wars. The reason I prefer CK2 over EU3 is that ck2 gives you less sitting on your butt, if you don't want to. You can push little claims from vassals, help the dynasty, get prestige/piety in foreign wars etc. The EU games have a timeframe and world that appeal more to me though, so I can predict I will like EU4 far more.

For me, frankly, it may all depend on how well the DHE's are implemented. I'm one of that minority of players who liked the scripted events of EU2 and was very sorry to see them disappear in 3. EU3, while a very good game, is for me pretty bland compared to 2. Every country plays pretty much the same. Of course 3 is a more modern game than 2 with infinitely better UI and better game mechanics, etc., but for me there's something lacking.

Since I understand that the developers felt at least a little bit the same way I do and that that's why they implemented the DHE's, I'm looking forward hopefully to EU 4.

Certainly, just look at the number of posts on the EU3 forum - it has more than all the other paradox games combined. EU4 will be a massive improvement and it will be the best paradox game ever.

EUIV made me come back here! :p

Played EUII for hours and hours and hours and... Well, a lot. EUIII I also played a lot, but not nearly as much. Had nothing to do with the game (which I loved), was more of a time issue (family, work). Stumbled upon the game play vids on YouTube for EUIV and my interest was immediatelly peaked. Really looking forward to it! My wife's been asking for a new laptop for a while now. I'll be sure to keep EUIV's specs in mind. ;)

I've sunk so much time into paradox games and I only started playing them last year

EU 3 388 hours and rising pre release
CK 2 284 hours
Victoria 2 184 hours
EU Rome 84 the first one I played and worst of the lot but still really fun

I have literally spent 1/12 of my life playing paradox games since I discovered them how much more will I spend on EU 4 probably alot more ;)

From what I've seen of Quill's preview the game looks amazing. Though I had issues originally with the changes from EU2-EU3, mostly making each country the same as any other country in the vicinity when the historical determinism was taken out, I've loved EU3. So many more starting options, too, with the converter DLC. I'd love to make a few EU4 mods just running CK2 hands off until the end, or buff up some minor (just a bit), and start off EU4 as them. OP Ireland? Thanks! Miles O'Cabot and Shamus O'Albuquerque to the rescue!

Seriously?
lol

I'd say its a debated topic, HOI3 was very very different from HOI2. Both have their strengths in different departments.

I hope EU4 is an improvement, and from what I've seen so far it looks like it will be an improvement in all areas. I thought CK2 and Vicky 2 were superior sequels so I hope EU4 continues the trend.
