Do you think EU4 will surpass its predessors

Now that we are literally a stones throw from release, I am getting quite excited. But also slightly nervous.

Why nervous you ask? Well it occurred to me that I have NEVER played a sequel that i believe has completely eclipsed its predecessors in gameplay and enjoyment. In fact 4 of the games I ever had the most enjoyment playing, the games that came after were such rubbish they put me off the franchise completely.......one of them was the reason i found EU3.

The problem is usually, that game devs sacrifice some core game mechanics, in order to make them more accessible and in doing so get rid of most of the things that made the game great for the fan base that played it. It usually results in a horde of ranting forum posts on day 1. LOL.

For what its worth, I think Pdox have gone about it the right way, by not reinventing the wheel. But refining it.

EU3 has fast become one of my most played games ever (And im 31 years old tomorrow, so that's a lot of games!), and has weedled its way into my heart like no other before or since. My question is, now that we have most of the dev diaries and the Quill18 vids. Do you think this game will be more enjoyable, immersive and playable than the last?

I certainly hope so, and it does look really, really, really good.

Like you stated,they refined a lot of the mechanics ,making it overall a much better experience. So yes, i am sure that eu3 will never be visited anymore except for maybe 10mins of nostalgia

I think it will yes. The new overextension mechanics are so much better, and the fact that missions don't grant cores on completion means it's harder to massively expand. It also seem's like you can collapse quite easily if you get high war exhaustion, over extension and so on. (see what happened to scotland after it got it's army wiped in Quill's videos and the fact one irish province gave 16% over extension) over all I think this will eclipse Eu3 massively and also CKII

Considering I never returned to Crusaders Kings 1 since CK2. I would argue that the same would occur here. It does look a lot more refined, though, from quills videos, it does look far simplier/easier so far more beneficial for new players.

I am excited for it also......I have played ALL of the EU versions. (I will admit I was less than happy with EU3 at release) I enjoyed playing them all. Each was an upgrade on the one before. EU3 was a Huge upgrade in Ahistorical playability, especially after HTTT expansion.

That being said after reading the DD's, I think that this Sequel will be another Upgrade in playing experience.

I will keep EU3 on my computer but will delete the Desktop shortcut.......

EU3 is my absolute favourite Paradox game, i couldn't possibly tell you how many hours I've played that game over the years. From the live streams,Quill's videos and dev diaries, EUIV looks even more brilliant, yet i shall reserve judgement until I've actually played the game for my self.

I predict it will be superior to EU3 though. Which if true, will be the only game likely to actually stop me playing EU3.

Yea, i think most ck2players who are new will give it a try + old eu3 veterans + noobies. I hope it does ,so pds keep pumping out dlcs to this dream of a game

Well... 2 was better than 1, and 3 was much better than 2. And they were all really, really good.

Paradox generally doesn't disappoint. The streak can't last forever, but I'm hoping Sengoku counts as the "bust" title and we can all just assume its smooth sailing for EU4.

Whatever they say about it, I can't see Sengoku as anything but a testbed for features used to their full extent in CK2. (Mapstuff, title system, whatever I forgot)
I wonder if MotE is the same for EU4.

I didn't like EUIII; the UI was terrible it was like trying to read braille off of my monitor. I will likely preorder this as it looks like the cleaned up a lot of that and made it easier to understand.

I love the new little things that I can see in Quills game. Little blue hints coming up if you ask for them, in like a Wikipedia format, the UI is soooooooo much cleaner. The fact that although the sliders have gone (this concerned me massively when I heard it), the points system seems to make you choose between some tough decisions in places.

I have high hopes for this.

I think so. CK2 was a high point and this seems to follow the same spirit. I bet loads if players who only played CK2 will be carried over. Especially if a save game converter is included.

In spite of several attempts, I was never able to like EU3 for a number of reasons - but was a huuuuuge fan of EU2. No game has been able to captivate me the way EU2 did ever since.

But from what I've read in the diaries and previews and seen in the videos, EU4 just *might* be that game. It simply looks amazing on all accounts, and I can't wait for the demo to be released to get a hands-on impression. Has Paradox made their masterpiece? Time will tell...

In terms of quality sure, Paradox does a good job at listening to players. EU2 and 3 have both been huge improvements upon their predecessors and EU4 looks like its continuing that upward trend.

In terms of sales, definitely. Being on Steam will greatly increase exposure to the game and it will definitely surpass both EU3 and CK2, which is a niche title.

I've clocked up close to 100 hours in EUIII yet I never really managed to get "into it". It is at times just so unnecessarily complex and opaque. From what I have seen of the Dev diaries, videos and Quill18's LP I can honestly say that this game looks like it's going to be awesome. Everything has been streamlined and made more open and accessible - without dumbing the game down. Strange mechanics like monthly/yearly income has been done away with and the Power system looks like it's going to be a game changer, in a positive sense. It really does look like they've thought this through and done their homework on keeping the good and fixing the bad things about EUIII. There is a good vibe coming from this game!

There is something which I can provide as an example of how Paradox's recent games appeal to me far more than the more antiquated ones.
EU3: 152 hours
CK2: 281 hours
Yeah, I know lots of other people have played for...years or something, but really, I find CK2 a lot more appealing in that it for some reason has more pull to the game. It just seems like there's a lot more to do whereas in EU3 basically you end up sitting around waiting for casus bellis to appear out of thin air or spamming colonists/diplomats places.
EU4 seems to be rectifying most of the issues I had with EU3 and looks like the feel of it will be a lot more like CK2 in terms of atmosphere and other things, so hopefully Paradox has made a game which capitalizes on the success of CK2 and looks at what went wrong with EU3, which of course is a great game in its own right; I just don't think it will be hard to surpass after basic improvements, such as steam integration for easier modding, the better engine they're using, and a better interface. Those alone can really make a huge difference.
